Tens of thousands more layoffs are announced

Post by dbackjon »

Thousands more jobs cuts were announced Monday. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., which is buying rival drugmaker Wyeth in a $68 billion deal, and Sprint Nextel Corp., the country's third-largest wireless provider, said they each will slash 8,000 jobs. Home Depot Inc., the biggest home improvement retailer in the U.S., will get rid of 7,000 jobs, and General Motors Corp. said it will cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio due to slow sales.

Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest maker of mining and construction equipment, announced 5,000 new layoffs on top of several earlier actions. The latest cuts of support and management employees will be made globally by the end of March. An additional 2,500 workers already have accepted buyout offers, and ties have been severed with about 8,000 contract workers worldwide. In addition, about 4,000 full-time factory workers already have been let go.

Just last week, Microsoft Corp. said it will slash up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months. Intel Corp. said it will cut up to 6,000 manufacturing jobs and United Airlines parent UAL Corp. said it would get rid of 1,000 jobs, on top of 1,500 axed late last year.

...and, Jon...you don't see any irony in posting this within minutes of starting a thread discussing Obama's announcement to increase regulation and restrictions on so-called "greenhouse gas" emissions? :?

Helll-oooo?

And neither are as connected as you would think.

I would actually guarantee that if the CAFE standards had been bumped the way environmentalists wanted decades ago, our economy would be in MUCH better shape today than it is.

One of the big reasons that there is so many low mileage vehicles on the road is the Bush tax law which allowed a complete write off for businesses purchasing new vehicles as long as their GVW exceeded 6,300#.

Every end year folks hurried down to the accountant's office to see if they needed that write off for the current year, and if so, out to get that big bad brand new one ton duely 4X4 with the leather seats, etc.

Encouraged gas guzzling together with rewarded tank buying. What a country!! :D

I own a 2006 Honda Civic, which gets ~30-32 mpg in town & on the interstate. BUT, being that I live in the Arctic (Fargo), the gas mileage suffers immensely. So it wouldn't matter if I drove it, or my '89 F-250 because they'd do about the same right now.

And have nothing to do with the export of manufacturing jobs overseas for the past 25 years...

...that must have been, uh, uh, the unio...nope, can't go there...uh, uh, uh, oh! I got one! It was Evil Reagan's union busting trade agreements that are responsible for exporting the millions upon millions of manufacturing jobs out of the U.S.. Whew...that was a close one!

Time to spin some more TruthSpeak.
