"Osama bin Laden was not armed when a U.S. Navy SEAL shot and killed him during the early Monday raid in Pakistan, a White House spokesman said today, contrary to previous accounts provided by Obama administration officials.

"He was not armed," spokesman Jay Carney said today while reading a revised narrative that corrects other errors from previous readouts of the operation that took the life of the world's most wanted terrorist.

The new account changes the initial claim, later withdrawn, that bin Laden had used a woman believed to be his wife as a "human shield" when confronted by U.S. forces.

The updated version says "a woman -- bin Laden's wife -- rushed the U.S. assaulter and was shot in the leg but not killed."

"Bin Laden was then shot and killed," the narrative adds at that point. "He was not armed."

At a White House briefing yesterday, counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan said that bin Laden "engaged in a firefight with those that entered the area of the house he was in. And whether or not he got off any rounds, I quite frankly don't know."

Brennan also said bin Laden was "hiding behind women who were put in front of him as a shield."

Today, Carney said bin Laden "resisted" during the raid, adding that such resistance does not require a firearm......"

So you think the Seals had orders to not bring this scumbag back alive? Not that I have any problems with that- it wouldn't have been good to capture him and then have the prospect of spending hundreds of millions of dollars in maybe the biggest show trials the world has ever seen. A bullet to the head is a lot cheaper.

I'm not sure anyone has said this was a capture mission. I read somewhere it was a kill mission. I don't have a problem either way.

Yeah....they're just like each other.
Now Z, you and I both know it wasn't that clear cut. Eagle Claw was one of the most, if not the most, complicated rescue missions ever attempted. The failure was partially to blame with leadership in DC and mostly to blame with whatever commander fed them the line that it could work.

Talk about a cluster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Eagle_Claw

Delta Force had little to do with the failure. Truth be told, as much as it pains me to say it, the final failure point was a Marine Corps rotary pilot. He was put in an impossible situation.

Now the story is Osama reached for a gun when they entered the room.

Helicopters landing on the compound...gun fire downstairs and he only reaches for a gun when they come in the bedroom?

It will be nice when they finally settle on a story

The SEALs (heroes by any definition) did the right thing in killing bin Laden. The last thing we need is to see video of some hooded terrorist holding an American hostage's head with a knife at his throat demanding bin Laden's release.

As for President Obama, good on him. The operation was a success by almost any imaginable standard and he is the COC. He supervised the mission, gave the orders, and deserves all the credit in the world for this as does every person who had a hand in the search and destroy mission going back to October 2001. Heroes all and great Americans.

President Obama's political fortunes insofar as his re-election bid won't be determined by this great victory. It will be determined by independent voters on the second Tuesday in November 2012 who will likely vote with their pocketbooks, and there is a LOT of water to go under the bridge between now and then. I don't even care about that in the context of what happened Sunday night, that was a wonderful thing for us all.

I have been saddened to see partisan political bickering between members of this board in a time when we should all be celebrating and honoring the heroes who made the mission a success. Damn it guys we are Americans first and foremost, not democrats and republicans. We aren't each other's enemy, al Qaeda and radical Islam is ALL our enemy.

For once can we be big enough and show enough character to put our mutual goals first? To lift up those who we rely on and trust with our safety? Or are we such a petty, selfish, and small minded nation that we seek fault and cheap political points in what are our greatest victories as Americans? :ohno:
