Thanks niner - hadn't seen this yet.
Maybe I'm reading between the lines too much, but the way this article reads it seems to me that if the economic climate were better they would be recommending a move up on their original due date. I'm not sure how I feel about it except I wish they would just go ahead and make a decision and stop with the suspense.

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see anything that says a 1 year delay - just pushing the decision out some.

Well the recommendation might not be a year away but if it doesn't come before July 1st the effect is the same as pushing it out another year.ChetSteadman wrote:Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see anything that says a 1 year delay - just pushing the decision out some.
I think the issue, considering the state budget doesn't fund athletics in our state (unless you're Chapel Hill or State), is more along the lines of there was no where to move up to. Or at least somewhere to move up to that App found acceptable.ASUG8 wrote:Thanks niner - hadn't seen this yet.![]()

Why should cutbacks in other parts of the university be an issue? I thought moving up to FBS was supposed to create a huge financial winfall. If so, that newfound money could be used to help out the English department, the library, or whatever.
Or maybe there's an underlying truth that is exposed in this article: the supposed big pile of cash that comes from a move up doesn't really exist.

It's said in the article: It's the public perception.TribeFanInNC wrote:Why should cutbacks in other parts of the university be an issue? If we move up to FBS, it's seen as spending lots of money on our athletic programs... at the same time that we're having to cut back programs and classes and lay off teachers... due to state budget shortfalls. Athletics receive no state funding... so they are totally separate... but, generally... the public doesn't realize that. So, the perception looks bad.
App has faced criticism by some... for replacing the turf on the football field while having to cut back on class offerings. It's just that people are ignorant to the fact that athletics and academics are separate funding-wise.Public universities face large budget cuts, and Cobb and Sywassink said the timing might not be right for a recommendation, although the football team doesn’t receive state money.
“Right now with where the state budget is, a perception is, ‘How are you going to cut programs on campus yet spend more money on football,’” Cobb said.
“We can say all we want about the fact that there is no state appropriation for athletics in North Carolina, but the perception is there.

Sounds to me like the program hasn't received the prefered invite and App must make a good decision and not just move to any conference to get in the FCS. Life in the SoCon is pretty good until the right situation presents itself and there could be some things happening within a particular conference(s) that aren't being discussed in the open.

That would be a pretty short list: UConn and USF. Have I missed anyone? And how much of a profit did UConn take home from the Fiesta Bowl this year?SDHornet wrote:Unless you are in a BCS conference; THIS.TribeFanInNC wrote:Why should cutbacks in other parts of the university be an issue? Yeah, y'all are right. FBS teams are clamoring to drop down to FCS because they are hemorrhaging money since FBS football makes no financial sense. In fact, the NCAA had to institute a moratorium to stop teams from moving down.

The recommendation was never slated to be made before June so there's no real delay. The deadline for applying for reclassification is June 1st, not July 1st.

Been there, discussed that. I think, like others have said, that the real road block is not having an acceptable place to go yet.
