I've worked with flood recovery efforts and I feel for what people will go through trying to get "help" every time I hear about a disaster. In North Carolina the State recovery program is even worse than FEMA.

I understand trying to be good stewards of tax payer money, but $22 million ain't exactly going to balance the budget. It's probably costing more to reexamine all the past claims and going after people who are now deemed ineligible than what can be recaptured anyway.

FEMA is not popular around the Cedar River Valley. To pretty much anyone that was affected, even in a small way, FEMA is worse than the words fuck, cunt, nigger, and faggot all rolled into one.

Not a bad return. $10,000 to FEMA, $40 from the Census Bureau. :thumb:

They redrew the flood maps for my county and moved the 100 year flood plain to touch my house (used to just be in the back yard) so now I have to pay for flood insurance to the tune of $1800 per year. Only problem is my county came in a deepened and widened my creek after the redraw but they won't update the maps. If you saw the creek at the end of my backyard, you'd laugh that they make me get flood insurance. This is a creek that is only above ground for 500 yards before it gets to my yard. We had a 100 year rain the year before they made the creek larger and there is no way this thing threatens my dwelling. Keep in mind that I only have dwelling coverage (no fucking way I'm paying for contents coverage for an event that won't happen) and it would take a flood of biblical proportions to damage my dwelling. Only 5' of my home is in the flood plain and the land only rises another 6" in those 5'. So that means that a couple feet of my house would be under a copule inches of water. Fuck, I get pissed every time I explain my frustrations.

edit: don't have a good photo on laptop of creek, but here it is in the snow.

FEMA passes the cost of the redraw on to the county and my county, like most, is not in great financial shape (another thing that pisses me off) so they are doing their damnedest to not have to pay for FEMA to do this. My county councilman is next in line to get involved.

If it is costing you 1800 per year in extra cost...does it cost any neighbor also? Can you get together and just pay for the remapping yourselves out of your own pocket to save in the long run?

Oh man. Can you imagine if this had happened to her? The thread would be 10 pages by noon tomorrow.

POST EDIT: What happened to 89Hen...this IOWA thing probably is down a few notches on her TO-DO list.

Only two of us are in the flood plain as the road bends away from the creek immediately after my house. The other house that is affected doesn't have to buy because they don't have a mortgage (wife grew up in the house and inherited it). If I didn't have a mortgage, I wouldn't HAVE to buy it, but I don't have a couple hundred thousand to throw at the mortgage to pay it off. :x

Hell, you're in the industry - make your mortgage go away, then drop the insurance.

Would be nice.

BTW, besides costing me $1800 per year, it will also deminish the value of my property. $150 per month = about $30,000 in mortgage payment. If a buyer catches on, they can use that against me. :x
