I had the pleasure of living in Balmer in the late 70's and most of the 80's, within walking distance of Memorial Stadium. I loved the shows Earl would put on, covering home plate with dirt, turning his hat around so the bill wouldn't hit the ump when he got close, taking second base off the field when he finally went to the club house, etc.

Man has never invented a better reason to drink beer and eat peanuts, than baseball on a hot humid summer night with a showman as a manager.

Moving to Atlanta in the late 90's and getting to watch Bobby Cox was good, but no where near the show Earl put on.

Weaver was VERY good at this, as was Whitey Herzog. But when it comes to managerial meltdowns, nobody beats the master: Billy Martin.

Yeah. As I recall, he didn't like the way things went during the first game of a DH and was tossed by the umps when he came out with the lineup card before the second game!

The funniest part of all this was, in the middle of all those expletives, Weaver telling Luciano (?) that he could come pay to see Weaver in the Hall of Fame in a few years, and Luciano saying, "You're going to the Hall of Fame for blowing the World Series?"

Earl had a classic quote in SI many years ago about Luciano.

Some of you may remember that Luciano retired as an umpire to work as an analyst for NBC on the baseball game of the week.

So Weaver was asked what he thought about Luciano being an analyst on TV,

and Earl said:

"I hope he is better at this job than he was at his last one"

Classic putdown.
