That's because it is absurd. It's like saying U2 is an under-appreciated band. :coffee:

Dude, why must you grovel for compliments on Jeter? He's about to become the third youngest player to reach 3000 hits. Doesn't THAT speak for itself? :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:
You would think so, wouldn't it?

But you gets guys like GF who call you absurd if you suggest that Jeter is actually under-appreciated by baseball fans.
It is absurd - the guy is a sure fire, first ballot, HOF'er, and is known as one of the better post season players in history, and he has a few rings to back it up. Nobody is denying any of that. It is absurd that you then come on here, claim that he's underappreciated, and then whine about it when people challenge you on that. I understand that D1B has worn you down over the years with his relentless attacks, often with little merit, but that's no excuse to go all bonkers on us and claim that saying he's a first ballot HOF'er and one of the greatest post season players ever is under appreciating him. If you want to blow the guy, hey, it's a free country man, but he's not under appreciated because we don't want sloppy seconds.

Not underappreciated...overhyped. Big difference. Again, if he played on ANY other team he'd be discussed in the same sentence as Craig Biggio, not Mickey Mantle.
Well, Biggio is a stretch - sure he had 3k hits, but he's like 30 points below Jeter's average and has nothing in the post season. There's quite a few hitters (just looking at hitting, not power as well) that I'd take over Jeter or at least be considered equivalent, and just guys I've seen in my lifetime - Pujols, ARod, Ichiro, Carew, Boggs, Brett, Gwynn, Piazza, Molitor. Not a bad list to be among, mind you, but JJ will consider it an insult I'm sure.

No, I think the comparison to Paul Molitor is on the money. Jeter without all the championships is Molitor. But remember how Molitor was lavishly praised for being a natural, pure hitter as he approached 3,000 hits.

Molitor has two rings as well...

Moreover - my point remains: Put Jeter in Milwaukee and he's Molitor - beloved locally acknowledged somewhat nationally... instead he plays in the ESPNZone - so we get treated to the baseball media tongue bathing the guy.

I don't recall anything but praise for Molitor as one of the game's greatest, pure and consistent hitters.

0 HR and 10 RBI in the month of August. 4 HR for the entire YEAR. He's a regular Mickey Mantle.

Oh, and it's .297, not .300. :tothehand:

Jeter and Granderson visited a local steakhouse last weekend in Minneapolis. People were impressed with Granderson, while Jeter mostly kept to himself. A humble man.

It was .300 when I posted; he went 0-2 after that  (although one was a line drive to second that could have gone for a hit).

JoltinJoe wrote:An interesting sidenote is developing as the Yankee captain approaches 3,000 hits.

Jeter is currently 36 years old and does not turn 37 until June 26, 2011.

Only two players in MLB history, Ty Cobb (34) and Hank Aaron (36), have reached the 3,000 hit milestone prior to their 37th birthday.

Jeter currently needs 38 hits before June 26 in order to join this exclusive club. The Yankees have 41 games scheduled between today (May 12) and June 25.

Jeter has played in 32 of the Yankees' 34 games thus far this season and has 36 hits.

At present pace, this is going to be a close call.
Anyone see the HBO special on him? Howfucking dull is that dude!? I'm not 36 making millions (i'm 28 verging on 6 figures) and I dress better than he does. Jesus Christ!
Turns out I might be a little gay. 89Hen 11/7/17

By far, better than any player who ever suited up for the Class DBacks.

Any hitter? Or any "player"? Because RJ is head and shoulders (literally and figuratively) ahead of him. :coffee:

RJ forever tainted by being unable to pitch in the only place it counts.

After two seasons in the majors, we demoted him back to the bush leagues.

PS -- He continued to pitch pretty well in the bush leagues for a few seasons after the Yankees demoted him.

Five Cy Youngs
303 wins
4875 SO's
10 time all star

One of only 5 pitchers in the HISTORY of MLB to win the Cy Young in both leagues. Holds the record for most consecutive Cy Youngs won (4), 2nd most Cy Youngs in History. 2nd most career strikeouts in the HISTORY of MLB.

Name me ANY category Jeter is in the top 5 in his career. Any. And thats with the protection of the most potent lineup year after year after year after year.

Go ahead....I'll wait. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Face it. You're just bitter because he whooped up on your beloved Yankmees in 2001.

Jeter would more be like Yount in Milwaukee than Molitor. Yount was a one team player with 3000 hits. Yount played 1400 games at SS. Molitor only played approx 1400 games in the field. Might have had better stats had he stayed away from the nose candy.
