To me thats bad news. Jose was highly recruited out of Ca. at a time we were looking for a QB. He paid some dues here and saw some great action. He was at the helm in the Big Win against the Big 12 contender and BCS member Kansas Jayhawks. He saw some critical action at Montana State in that Big NDSU win in the FCS playoffs last year. He was a contributor and a gamer.

The only good news I can see is the talent we must have at QB. Jose wants to play and he was pushed down to 3rd on the depth chart behind #1 Brock Jensen and #2 Eisley Thorton.

Thats the way it goes. Jose Mohler was a good BISON and has his place secure in the legend of the Bison Lore. We do wish him well.

A couple things come to mind concerning the game with Lafayette:

1) Jose was a threat and could move the team. It takes some things off their plate in their preparation for the BISON.
2) This frees up a scholarship that may be used for a transfer or JUCO player that will present problems for the Leopards.

For them its both good and bad. It could be to their advantage.

For NDSU it means the top two guys are now a little more solid, but overall the entire QB lineup was weakened.

In the end I dont think it will have much affect on this game. Its going to be an adjustment for the fans more than anything, and a developing situation to watch.

Take a look at the 3 forced fumbles that YSU lost. Theres your clue. Thats where you see the seperation between the physical game YSU plays and the physical game NDSU plays. They simply got the ball knocked loose on 3 occations by some booming hits and couldnt recover.

In an even and well played game victory is found in the margins. Somethimes its a bill fette deal other times its physical supedriority. It can be anything, but in this game it was physical superiority on the part of the BISON (see 3 fumbles lost).
YSU's o line took it to you, 250 rushing and 25 first downs, and dominated the clock. By contrast half of NDSU's 200 rushing came on about three plays where defenders fell down. Jose saved the day with his arm.
to be fair we were missing our all-conf DT Matt Gratzek. Hopefully our young DL steps up this year with him gone

Jose Mohler leaving is a controversy. Nobody on any side or from any viewpoint thinks the less of Jose, he made a choice in the face of facts. He just didnt see any playing time behind the QBs NDSU has put ahead of him on the depth chart. That is positive for NDSU.

I think Jose should have been given a chance much earlier when Mertens was struggling. That's what they recruited him for. There is a rap either way, but thats something of what football is about.

It's one less worry for the Leopards, that's for sure!

One thing I can give the Leopards is that they are a very polished, disciplined team (at least the team I saw play last year). Their LBs were very good about holding assignments against UNI's pistol offense. I didn't see any freakish talent, but very solid execution on both sides.

As for Jose, he played ugly, but seemed to find a way to move the ball most of the time. He did have a different style of play than Jensen. Haven't seen Thorton play, but I think he is more like Jensen that Jose style wise from what I have read.

This doesnt have much to do with Lafayette, but I was just at a luncheon with Jerry Kill. He sure isnt bragging about his football team. We can expect

1) More intensive in-state recruiting. The core of the team has to represent the culture
2) More speed.

Some interesting things he mentioned

3) He coached at old NDSU rival Pittsburgh State in Kansas.
4) He has high hopes for his QB, forget his name.

He drew a big crowd and gave a good speech. A lot of his assistants came with him to Minnesota and have been with him for many years.

Coach Kill says his football team has 4 rules:

1) Be on time
2) Go to class
3) Practice hard
4) Play hard on Saturdays

He says he isn't smart enough for more than that and his team isn't very good at any of them, but they are working on it.

NDSU Womens softball plays San Deigo State on ESPNU..... starts in a few minutes. It also looks like its on ESPN 360 too.

AZ State put a 10-0 score on the BISON yesterday. They are in the losers bracket now and will need two wins if they make it to the title game.

Before you come into an NDSU thread you should try and shake your head clear from the 42-17 (late junk score in the 4th made it look closer than it was) the BISON hung on your Big Sky Championship trophy.
D2, NAIA & D3 games are not bone-a-fide.

These exhibition games (NAIA, D2, D3) dont count. Until they do they should be noted as exhibition and not included in the won loss record of the FCS team.
JBB wrote:NDSU does a much better job with its scheduling. They schedule FCS or FBS. It is the intent of the division to promote inter division competition. NDSU will be playing the Gophers the week of your big Minot State game. In a recent poll 10% of the MSU fan base was looking forward to the game.

A little thread drift but the Gophers website is now listing the NDSU @ Minnesota game as a 6PM kickoff. Im disappointed. I was hoping for an afternoon kickoff. Too much chance of the weather being bad, too late to go home.

The tickets we bought are already up in price by about $20/ticket. Ill be watching the ticket sites. A re-sell is not out of the question. We have a sell order from our group when the premium reaches $50/ticket.

So why do you constantly hang your hat on your win over Montana if it didn't count?

NDSU didnt count the exhibition game with Montana besides showing it on the schedule. We won the game but it didnt count in the playoff selection. In fact,
the record speaks wrote:that win cost NDSU a D2 playoff game in the same manner Montana was not in contention this year for scheduling yet another exhibition game with a D2.
So far as I know NDSU is the only D2 team to beat them, which is not that unexpected and sweet to boot but the games dont count for either team.

At the time of the Montana win, D2 actually penalized teams for playing FCS.

As far as Minot State goes it doesnt matter if you schedule them. They should be listed as exhibition thats all and not included in your won loss because they dont count. Believe me, if Minot wins and thats not that far fetched, it will count but wont contribute to either teams playoff amibitions.

D2 is some important football. I love the game at that level. The stadiums are different than a lot of the FCS stadiums especially the Fabulous Fargo Dome, It's a certain kind of football not to be ignored or disrespected.

NDSU doesnt schedule D2s or NAIAs. Some Dakota teams on their way to the dream of FCS ball and getting better "Just Like the Bison" will schedule from both divisions.

NDSU sticks with the FCS and FBS. It gives us an advantage over schools that exploit the lower division teams. The lower division teams dont count in playoff selection. They arent relevant to the folks that preach the playoffs.

That's why this is a good game for both Lafayette and North Dakota State. Its intra-divisional, not inter-divisional. Its a counter and win or lose, its a tie breaker over an NAIA game like MSU has with Minot State.

NDSU is doing it right. Minot State is a good game if D2 and the FCS change their scoring on strength of schedule, but until they do that kind of scheduling is keeping money out of the FCS game, and Minot States hands, as well as weakening the division.

You constantly brag about ndsu not scheduling DII games (who gives a fuck anyway?) as if that is some sort of badge of honor, yet you are ALWAYS the one bringing up DII football, and talking about schools like Minot St. What the fuck is Minot St? Does anyone know, or care where that is?...

The NAIA Minot State Beavers @ Montana State game is an "at-odds-divisional game." It doesnt count. Its a trade-off for a cheap opponent against the loss of a counter game toward the playoffs. For some schools this is a no-brainer: They arent going to the playoffs anyway. For others it is a boast: They go no matter what.
