I've always said the refs are part of the game, just like the weather. Both teams play under the same conditions. No team I have ever cheered for has been jobbed by the refs. Gil has been correct in his observations. Although we come to the same conclusion I would have to say I dont see the refs and the weather in the same light. The human element is hard to judge. Certainly nobody disagrees that the human is capable of prejudice or "bias". The weather is a purely natural phenomena.
Its obvious the national polls are showing some bias. These polls have momentum. Some of the more astute observers may have noticed that teams that have done well are often ranked highly even though prospects may have dimed significanty. The opposite is also true. That's why I feel Lafeyette should be getting some notice. Its odd they dont know more about this quintessential "eastern school".
In terms of importance this game is bigger than a lot of people think. All knowing eyes in FCS football will be looking on intently. Both teams have a lot of "upside". The BISON, of course, are always of interest.
Rarely does a team get the opportunity to come into a storied stadium like the prestigious "Fabulous Fargo Dome" to face a legendary program like the NDSU BISON. It's the kind opportunity a school with its own strong football traditions is excited about. Its a chance for both schools to make a mark and gain momemtum in the "big run" for the playoffs!
This game may seem a little remote from the Dakota Big 3 but its a game that projects the prestige of that elite group "back east". Thats where FCS football is. Thats where the heart of the game is. Its not in obscure "western" conferences, as competitive as they might be.

It's that philosophy, as well as the entire "lower division debate", that drives NDSU scheduling. Its a model that is now copied by all important Dakota schools including the Big 3: NDSU, SDSU and USD, as well as other DI Dakota programs. You play all the big central teams and you spread the word "back east". Its often called the "NDSU Model".JBB wrote:If you want the attention of the FCS you play east not west.

The exciting thing about the "NDSU Model" is this: if successfully implemented you dont need to go FBS.

The NDSU model must include scheduling weak OOC opposition in an attempt to get to 7 Divisional Wins. True, but you have to look at it from the NDSU pov.: A team that has never finished above .500 in MVC play doesn't need to be out there scheduling tough OOC games. If they had done that last year their four conference losses would have left them home, even in a diluted field.EWURanger wrote:The NDSU model must include scheduling weak OOC opposition in an attempt to get to 7 Divisional Wins. Being in a weak conference doesn't help SOS, and going 4-4 in that conference makes things even worse. SDSU had the best SOS in the Valley.houndawg wrote:True, but you have to look at it from the NDSU pov.: A team that has never finished above .500 in MVC play doesn't need to be out there scheduling tough OOC games. Re: NDSU NEXT GAME:Lafayette Leopards @ NDSU BISON Preview A
NDSU is scheduling counter games, not division 2, 3, NAIA or NAIA transitional teams. None of those are counters and all appear to be attempts to make money. They dont count. NDSU games are all sanctioned by our division. Attempts to say otherwise are displays of ignorance.
I have already detailed the importance of scheduling "in division". For readers wishing to refresh or aquaint themselves with that discussion a review of this thread would be helpful.
SOS is always considered. The win against Kansas is a case in point. You will also notice NDSU schedules "east". Thats where the heart of the division lies. Obscure, but sometimes competitive "western" teams are really the backwater of the division with traditionally weak OOC schedules often including NAIA teams, D2, D3 and NAIA transitional squads.
Im not sure the GWC has ever had a playoff win. Most of the conferences in the west are 1 or 2 teams and then the also-rans. Its not a real competitive situation although the schools in that situation are loyal.
The MVFC is in a perfect "central position". This will always provide them with meaningful competition and scheduling opportunities in the FCS/FBS. The "lower division debate" isnt really relevant to eastern or central ball, where the heart of the game is found.

It should be noted that the St. Francis game this year was a replacement game for Georgia Southern. they backed out on their travel side of a home/home with NDSU. NDSU beat them handily down in Georgia.
Even in a pinch NDSU scheduled a counter game, not a lower division exhibition.

The best part of all this and the whole point I've been making for weeks now that you fail to understand because you're so mentally handicapped, is that every generalization you make about me, in actuality applies to yourself. You'd be the perfect case study for Anna Freud and her Ego Defense Mechanisms. You're so intellectually retarded that your ego can't help but to try and defend you against itself. Almost every one of your posts, particularly in regards to NDSU's heart-breaking loss to EWU, you exemplify...
Denial - arguing against an anxiety provoking stimuli by stating it doesn't exist
Intellectualization - avoiding unacceptable emotions by focusing on the intellectual aspects
Projection - placing unacceptable impulses in yourself onto someone else
Rationalization - supplying a logical or rational reason as opposed to the real reason
Reaction Formation - taking the opposite belief because the true belief causes anxiety
Regression - returning to a previous stage of development
Suppression - pushing into the unconscious

Lower division games are sanctioned, they just aren't considered for playoff selection. And what kind of a liberal are you to have a problem with schools attempting to make money?NDSU is scheduling counter games, not division 2, 3, NAIA or NAIA transitional teams. None of those are counters and all appear to be attempts to make money. They dont count. NDSU games are all sanctioned by our division. Attempts to say otherwise are displays of ignorance.
The heart of the division currently resides in Cheney, WA. The backwater of the division (if there is one) from a competition standpoint would be the schools and conferences that don't fully fund scholarships, refuse to compete in the playoffs, or who fail to win playoff games. You know - the CCU's, Morgan States, Wagner's, and South Dakota's of the world that you frequently play to, you know, increase your SOS. But at least South Dakota comes from a western conference which has a playoff win in the last decade, unlike the rest.SOS is always considered.
A western team has been in the chipper the last three years, and at large western teams have thrice knocked off seeded teams on the road within the last decade with six different teams having had at least one first round playoff win.
The MVFC is in a perfect "central position". This will always provide them with meaningful competition and scheduling opportunities in the FCS/FBS. The "lower division debate" isnt really relevant to eastern or central ball, where the majority of teams are found and scheduling is easier

its a shame that Montana & Georgia Southern are too chickensh__ to come to the fargodome and had to back out.
NDSU cant control that, plus playing a solid big 10/big12 team every year and BEATING them nullifies any cupcakes we get.

They announced the DI move prior to the 2003 season, so it wasn't the DII team thing. They never had a home and home signed, so Montana didn't backout, just didn't sign to play in Fargo.mlbowl wrote:lakesbison wrote:NDSU played there in 2003, they were supposed to come to fargo in 2006 or 2007, but backed out.

I think it was Montana State that backed out of their half of a home/home. A big deal was made of it and I think they were forced into fulfilling their obligation to NDSU and that game is now scheduled. I may be wrong but thats how I remember it.Gil Dobie wrote:They announced the DI move prior to the 2003 season, so it wasn't the DII team thing.
