Weiner goes to great lengths

Post by Bronco »

Seems like there was recently a special election cuz a NY politician sent a picture of himself with his shirt off.
If someone hacked his accounts he should get the FBI involved...wonder if he will.

US Rep. Anthony Weiner yesterday spent the day on the grill after a lewd photo purporting to be of him was sent to a pretty Seattle coed from his Twitter account -- but the young woman insisted a stalker was the culprit.

The six-term Democratic congressman struggled to play defense as rumors swirled, continuing to insist that the illicit tweet -- a below-the-waist photo of a man in bulging gray boxer-briefs -- was the work of a hacker. His rep called the incident nothing more than "a distraction."
T
he woman on the receiving end of the tawdry tweet -- 21-year-old Gennette Nicole Cordova -- said in a statement published in another New York newspaper that she was sure the questionable photo came from a person who had harassed her many times "after the congressman followed me on Twitter a month or so ago."

She insisted that while she's a "fan" of Weiner, she'd never met him in person.
Cordova did admit she once sent a tweet referring to "my boyfriend @Rep-Weiner," but insisted she never was his "wife, girlfriend or mistress,"

She said the motive of the man who harassed her was "defaming" Weiner."
And she added she's never had an "inappropriate exchange" with Weiner.
.
Cordova began following Weiner on Twitter during the time he tweeted about being on a talk show that would air in Seattle, and according to her statement, he began "following" her on the site, too.

Despite the quiet holiday weekend, Capitol Hill was buzzing about what quickly became known as Weinergate.
Some DC wonks were skeptical of Weiner's hacking story and questioned the lack of a police report about a crime as serious as Internet identity theft, a Washington insider said.

The uncertainty was also fed by Weiner's decision to quickly delete the posted photo -- and every other photo connected to the account.

As for Cordova, she took her Twitter and Facebook pages down after her name surfaced in connection with the congressman.

Weiner's rep, Dave Arnold, told The Post yesterday, "This is intended to be a distraction, and we're not going to let it become one.

"Anthony's accounts were obviously hacked. He doesn't know the person named by the hacker, and we will be consulting on what steps to take next."

Weiner, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, was married last summer to Huma Abedin, a former aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Really...his wife's name is
Huma Weiner

CNN’s John King asks a great question: “There’s one way the congressman could try to put this to rest, and that would be to call the Capitol Police or call the FBI and say ‘come on in, please launch an investigation because I was hacked.’ Why hasn’t he done that?”

According to Dana Bash, Rep. Weiner’s office did not respond to that question but informed CNN that the congressman instead has hired a lawyer.
As John King says: “Curious.”

Could be a bad week for the weiner

Link to video of presser.

http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/politi ... hacked.cnn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"In a performance that might please a defense attorney but would make a public relations consultant cringe, Weiner, who has said his Twitter account was "hacked" and also that he was the victim of a "prank," one-by-one refused to answer six of the most pressing questions about the controversy:

1) Was the photo in question of Weiner himself?
You know, look, I'm not going to talk about this any more. I think that if I was giving a speech to 45,000 people, and someone stood up and heckled in the back, I wouldn't spend three days talking to him. I'm going to get back to the conversation I care about.

2) Why hire a lawyer?
I've put out a couple statements over the last couple days. I would refer you to those to answer these questions. I understand you're doing your job, but I'm going to go back to work.

3) Why not report the matter to Capitol Police?
I put out a statement about that over the last couple of days. I put out a couple of statements. I mean, I'm trying my best, I've spent a couple of days cooperating and trying to help you do your job, but at a certain point I've got to get back to work and I think we've reached that point today.

4) Was the account hacked, or was Weiner the victim of a prank?
I'm not convinced that there's any value any more of me talking about it. I understand you've got to do your job, and I'm going to get back to work. There are some enormously important things, and I believe this has been a distraction. I'm not going to let it be so any more.

5) Why was Weiner following a 21 year-old college student on Twitter?
I appreciate the questions. I understand you're doing your job but this is now a couple of days later, I've got to finally get back to work and focus on things I want to focus on.

6) Is Weiner concerned about the security of Facebook and Twitter accounts?
I'm going to return to working on things that I care about. I've participated in the story a couple of days now, given comments on it. This is a distraction and I'm not going to let it distract me.

Near the end of the news conference, a reporter said to Weiner, "This distraction might go away if you answered some of the questions that are out there." A pensive looking Weiner quickly responded: "I'm not convinced of that. I'm not convinced of that."

At the moment, there is no publicly available proof either that Weiner sent the photo or that he was the victim of hackers. Weiner has expressed a desire to "move on." But many members of Congress have Facebook and Twitter accounts, and the possibility that those accounts could be sabotaged by someone seeking to destroy a politcian's career is troubling. For that reason alone, it seems likely that public officials, if not Anthony Weiner himself, will want to know more about what really happened in this case."

That presser was a fiasco. In my daydreams, I imagine Weiner going the way of Alan Grayson, but he probably lives in a very safe district.

This, if he didn't do anything wrong he has nothing to worry about. He should enist law enforcement to investigate and hopefully find whever "hacked" his account, not lawyer up and refuse to answer even the most basic questions.

Hell, who knows. I've seen plenty of blogs that have somehow "proven" it was hacked and a couple that have "proven" it wasn't.

I can say that plenty of people accidentally send tweets that they intended to be Direct Messages to their friends all the time. The Braves AJC beat writer, Dave O'Brien, sent out a tweet shortly after the Roger McDowell incident saying "He's in deep trouble. He really screwed up." and then insisted in later writings that it was supposed to be a DM and not about McDowell at all. He's sent out multiple tweets that were intended to be DMs. It happens. I've done it before, myself.

I dunno -- it just seems strange to me. Weiner only follows around 200 people. Why is one a 21 year old girl that he's supposedly never met? I'm working on the idea that there's something to this and that he meant to send this as a DM and screwed up.

Whether it was hacked or not is almost of no consequence now that he had that incredibly stupid presser.

If he did it the worst case scenario is that he just looks stupid. If he tries to shift blame by requesting an investigation of his account being "hacked" and the investigation finds that he did, in fact do it himself, then he would be in legal trouble for filing a false police report. I think he'll settle on just looking stupid. Sometimes these guys just don't look nearly as smart as they would like us to think that they are.
