I wonder if that friggin toll on I-95 helps pay for UD athletics. $4 Northbound and $4 Southbound. That is literally highway robbery.

I see a game vs VCU at City Stadium in the future though,∞∞∞ wrote:VCU sucks. Instead of using the money to expand their product, they did the complete opposite and put all their eggs in one basket. They're one bad hire, one bad decision, one bad recruiting class, or one bad violation from irrelevance...and then they would've ended up paying millions and millions of dollars thanks to something that is now simply a memory. At least with investing into multiple sports, you have something to rally the school around if one is faultering (Towson excluded of course).Blue_Trombone wrote:EDIT: Remember when this topic was about VCU and City Stadium?
So F VCU...bunch of artsy hipster wannabe sports fans. They've already been reprimanded by the state for raising the tuition by 24%, have one of the worst faculty-student ratios in Virginia, are constantly complaining about their alumni not giving money, and yet here they sit paying their basketball coach 1.3 million dollars a year (charging the students for it nontheless) and being short-sited about the future.
But I guess in the end, we'll be the one enjoying a beautiful fall afternoon with 20,000+ fellow fans while they sit at home reminiscing about a memory (albeit a great one). Memories are nice, but living in the present is even nicer.
I think VCU football will happen only because their No.1 Rival has it,
The article is almost a year old and a few things have transpired since then but VCU will have football. The football landscape will experience another tremor. Scenarios are being played out in the offices of every AD across the country including Norwood Teagues'. I know there are those of us who love to hate VCU, but once the inevitable happens and ODU moves up, there will be no rival and all of you will be left wanting.“CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager always says ODU starting a football team adds another log to the fire for VCU,” said Teague. “As (ODU’s football team) starts becoming more public, and as they start playing in the CAA and they start winning at a higher level, which they will, I think that will add a lot more fuel to the fire.”
Richmond is a Fortune 500 city. I don't think they will have difficulty raising funds through sponsorship. Heck, we got Retail Giant Walmart as a sponsor. They see a football power rising. It's not a matter of if but a matter of when ODU goes FBS. Sure we love to hate VCU but it's a rivalry hate. I actually have 2 semesters under my belt with the school (not in Art) so you can say I'm a half breed lol. I think it would be great if an FBS conference invited the 2 schools together. It would sustain the rivalry in the new conference.

Go through Elkton, man, it's not that much longer and it's absolutely free.CAA Flagship wrote:I wonder if that friggin toll on I-95 helps pay for UD athletics. $4 Northbound and $4 Southbound. That is literally highway robbery.
Got to cut the state some slack - most states have more than one road they can use as a toll road to collect money - Delaware just has I-95 for the serious traffic. Still cheaper than the bridges in NYC, though.

Route 13 will be the choice of most Monarch fans. It's got stop lights but at least there's a place to stop for gas and food every few miles. Watch your speed though, those DelMarVa Troopers set up traps all over.CAA Flagship wrote:I wonder if that friggin toll on I-95 helps pay for UD athletics. $4 Northbound and $4 Southbound. Google Maps suggests this route even when you check "avoid tolls".

While US13 does seem to be the obvious choice, the $12 at the bridge/tunnel ain't going to make it much cheaper.Sirloinburger wrote:Route 13 will be the choice of most Monarch fans. I'll have to check it out. There is nothing like a block of cheese to ensure no "emergency" stops on the drive back home after feasting on tailgate food.State Line Liquors wrote:Nothing, aside from admiration for their inventory selection.CAA Flagship wrote:

Yeah it's a pretty good stop, but I honestly don't think it's really that much better than just about any alcoholic beverage superstore I've ever been. It just happens to have been pretty close to campus and reasonable prices. They do have some excellent cheese selections though, and can give you some good recommendations for pairings if it's up your alley.CAA Flagship wrote:I'll have to check it out. I'd have you by our tailgate on the 24th for a gratis tasting of some of their booze, but I have a soon to be ex-pal that is getting married in NJ that weekend.

Don't you people schedule weddings around football games? I mean shit, why miss a game for a wedding. Either have the wedding after the game or some other weekend. I like Grotto Pizza on East Main, no alcohol for me. Gotta stay on my toes if I have to punch my way through the Delaware crowd after ODU defeats the mudhens. Wait, nevermind, isn't the average age of a Delaware fan 60 or something? I'll just toss Old Country buffett coupons in the air to make my way through the disgruntled crowd.

Is it better than Liquor World (since renamed Totally Wine) up on Naamans Rd in Claymont? Ever since they moved into the vacant Acme next door that place is huge - can't think of a beer they don't have.89Hen wrote:Largest beer selection I've ever seen in my life... by a factor of 2... and I'm not exaggerating.CAA Flagship wrote:

History of the Fightin' Blue Hens
University of Delaware teams have one of the most unusual nicknames in all of college athletics. The name "Fightin' Blue Hens" has its origins in the Revolutionary War and has been used by University teams since 1911.
On December 9, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved that a military battalion be raised from the lower three counties along the Delaware River. Thus, the Delaware regiment was born--a group of eight companies representing New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties.
The second company was from Kent County and commanded by Capt. John Caldwell, an owner of gamecocks. The troops often amused themselves by staging cockfights with a breed known as the Kent County Blue Hen, recognizable for its blue plumage.
The renown of these chickens spread rapidly during this time when cockfighting was a popular form of amusement, and the "Blue Hens' Chickens" developed quite a reputation for ferocity and fighting success.
Capt. Caldwell's company likewise acquired a considerable reputation for fighting prowess in engagements with the British at Long Island, White Plains, Trenton and Princeton, and soon was nicknamed "Caldwell's Gamecocks." The company was part of Col. John Haslet's first Delaware regiment, which reported for duty near the outset of the Revolutionary War in Jan. 1776. In Aug. 1781, remnants of the regiment were still battling at Eutaw Springs, S.C.
Although often referred to as "The Fighting Delawares," Haslet's regiment also won the nickname "The Blue Hens' Chickens." It was formally adopted by the Delaware General Assembly in 1939 when the Blue Hen Chicken was named the official state bird.
UD's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources maintains a breeding group of Blue Hen Chickens on the campus farm.

The route I'll take from just south of Philly to the Outer Banks in a couple of weeks, and the way I'll most likely take to go to JMU @ ODU (unless I swing through northern VA to rendevous with some tailgating compadres to caravan/carpool down. I much prefer that more of a straight line than doing the big arc of I95 through/around Wilmington/Baltimore/DC/Richmond to I64 east to Norfolk...Sirloinburger wrote:Route 13 will be the choice of most Monarch fans. Nevermind that the Blue Hen is in honor to soldiers who fought for independence from Britain, and carries historical significance to Delaware. It's a far better thing to earn your title as a spin-off of another institution and in doing so to honor the throne sitting monarchs of some lilly-livered foreign country, some 150 years after we sent them packing back to their continent.GannonFan wrote: History is simply lost on many in America these days...
