First Pick, Pittsburgh Pirates: Gerrit Cole, RHP, UCLA
Congrats to Scouting Director Greg Smith on the Pirates selection of UCLA RHP Gerrit Cole who certainly has the stuff....98-100 mph FB with a wipe out slider...change up flashes average....if command in the zone comes and that's the only question, which is the main reason his ERA is north of 3...he'll be as good as the Pirates think he'll be..
On the clock: Seattle Mariners

2nd Pick, Round 1: Danny Hultzen, LHP, Virginia (bit of a surprise here)....
Danny Hultzen is close to the big leagues....gives them a lefty behind King Felix and Pineda....knows how to pitch 11-3....6-2 195 Fastball in mid 90's
On the clock: YOUR Arizona Diamondbacks!

Round 1, Pick 3: Trevor Bauer, RHP, UCLA
His arsenal has been overpowering college hitters. His strikeout totals from his six Pac-10 starts: 15, 17, 13, 15, 10, 14. But one downside, in the eyes of some scouts, has been his pitch counts in those starts: 134, 135, 134, 134, 128, 120.
Bauer consistently outpitched Cole in the same rotation, and while he has a unique delivery, it's hard to argue with the stuff. 92-96 mph with a great curveball, split/change thing and fantastic competitiveness. Could be a No. 2 ceiling, but also the kind of pitcher that consistently exceeds scout's expectations
Predictions are that he might be in the majors THIS year... :coffee:

And UCLA doesn't win the World Series THIS year (which they didn't, not even making it out of regional play), they may NEVER win it....two of the top three picks! :?

Pick 6: Nationals select Anthony Rendon, 3B, Rice University
The Washington Nationals selected the best hitter in this draft in Anthony Rendon....this kid can really hit.....he can play 1B for them...i expect him to hit .300 with 20 HR's.......between Strasburg, Harper and Rendon.....pretty good 3 years of drafting first Monday June 6, 2011 7:36 Jim Bowden

Pick 7: Arizona Diamondbacks select Archie Bradley, 6'3", 215 lbs, RHP, Broken Arrow HS, Oklahoma

So that's two UCLA pitchers, and two Oklahoma HS pitchers in the first 7 picks.
Jim Bowden: Diamondbacks get Trevor Bauer and Archie Bradley in the same draft....whoa....GREAT DRAFT DAY for their future
Kevin Goldstein: HUGE day for Arizona, indeed. Bradley has mid-90s heat, great curve, fantastic athlete who has a football commitment to Oklahoma as a QB.
Should be a fun rotation to watch in a couple years. :notworthy: :notworthy:

i'm looking forward to seeing a few college seniors make it up to the show in the year they are drafted... might do something to help the draft as an event... as it is - watching the draft for guys who are a few years away is a bit frustrating...

My buddy's son was taken in the later rounds by the Astros. Has a full ride to Georgia Tech and will likely go to college.

TXSt had 5 taken in this draft.
I am pretty sure 4 of them will sign
I'm almost certain our 2B will come back. He was drafted as low as you can get....round 50

Gone
Juniors
1B - Ory Kalenkosky - 13th
3B - Kyle Kubitza - 3rd (was predicted 5-7)
RHP - Carson Smith - 8th (went way lower than anyone predicted)

Senior
RHP (relief) Joe Dvorsky - forget which round

I thought this was a pretty cool story, and a great move by the Rangers, drafting a player from Georgia who was paralyzed from the waist down during the season.

Good kid, I got to watch him play a few times. Great in the lead off spot and fast as hell.
