Just saw the boys 1500. The Kitties' Patrick Casey had the lead going into the last lap, but faded FAST on the next-to-last straightaway. A kid from Oregon won it (big surprise there).
Seems that I just missed seeing the girls 1500, which featured a girl from Sac. I didn't know CBS was broadcasting it until just before I turned it on for the boys' race. Now they're moving on to sprints.
I wonder if CBS is even going to bother with field events. That's one HUGE problem with TV track. If they bother with field events at all, it's a taped montage that lasts no more than a couple of minutes. I guess the powers-that-be think field events aren't "sexy" enough. It's called track and FIELD for a reason, dummies!

FYI, Sam Chelenga of Liberty just won the boys 5K AGAIN. I've lost track of how many national titles the soon-to-be US citizen has won between cross country and the track.
Nice that there's a three-way fight for the team title going down to the mile relay. Too bad only TWO of those teams are involved in the relay.

Wow. The team in first place in the mile relay looked VERY close to passing out of the zone on the transfer to the third leg.

There was craziness in the boys 120 hurdles that saw a guy in lane 7 (i.e. the OUTSIDE) lane win. Hurdles in lanes 3 and 4 were flying all over the place, and favored people were eating them, thereby taking themselves out of the running.
That was great, but one of these days, I'd love to see someone in lane 1 win a sprint or a hurdle race.

TX A&M just swept the mile relays, and almost broke 3 min in the boys version, beating back a late attack from LSU. Awesome!

Casey finished 8th which I think will make him an All-American. He's only a SO. so this experience will help him the next 2 years. The pace was really slow so he tried to push and he didn't have enough the last 200. Took some big ones to try it and it takes little ones to criticize him for it. SH.
The Dec was a great competition with a Frosh from Duke running the 2nd fastest Decathlon 1500 time ever in the world to go from 6th to 2nd in the last event. My nephew PRed in the 1500 by 6 secs, which he needed to hold the Duke Frosh off. Great ending.

Hey, I was pulling for him, but you can't expect to keep up an all-out sprint for the last 400m of a 1500m race. Just doesn't work.

Nice of you to ASSUME that I was running smack. Going balls out early might have been the only chance he had, but he was unfortunately unable to hold it. There's no shame in that. Fading fast is NOT the same thing as quitting, CA. If you took THAT out of what I said, then you're a conspiracy theorist of the worst degree.

Congrats Danefan - your nephew must have loved having an extra day to rest up for the 1500. Beach is a great middle distance runner and your nephew did a good job by about 4 seconds. Those fast times were due to the extra days' rest but all were in the same boat so no advantage given.
That's BS and you know it SH. Everything you post about the Bobcats is childish smack.
If that's what you think, then you haven't been paying attention. Griz fans are STILL upset that I've been predicting MSU to win the boys hoops championship for the last four years due to the presence of one Erik Rush.

Is he competing at USATFs (Worlds qualifiers)?
Yup. His 8118 made the Worlds B standard so he'll need to have a great day and finish 4th to make it a an alternate. With Clay, Hardee and Eaton competing, 4th is about the best the best he can hope for.
I was wondering if the points would count because it wound up being a 3 day event and easier to get some points. Good news.
And yeah - the top guys in the US decathlon are pretty good so he'd need to get the A standard anyways. Never know. A miss in the PV or HJ by one of those guys and a new PR by your nephew could get him through. That's why they hold the competition.

We heard that IAAF was going to count the scores as valid, but I didn't see anything official. Won't matter much though for the Dec guys, because as you said, they'll need to hit tha A mark anyway at USATFs.
My nephew left about 200 or so points on the table this week so you never know. He vaulted 17'9" in high school to win the national championship, but hasn't gotten back above 17' in college. He also jumped 6'6" this year in high jump, but only went 6'1" this week. He could be an 8400 guy if he can put it all together. Hopefully full time training now after graduation will help.

Plus he is still very young for a decathlete.
Definitely. We were just talking about qualifying for World Championships this Summer. He definitely has a bunch of years ahead of him to improve and make some national teams if it doesn't happen this year.
Dane just saw in the results that your nephew was a DNS for today. Not sure if you can share but is he injured? Had a great finish to his college career. Too bad that he was a DNS today for the 2nd day of competition.

A minor injury that should heal no problem. Just really kept him from competing at his top level which he would have needed to qualify for the Worlds spot so he decided better to avoid aggravating it and it turning into a serious injury.
Eaton is some athlete though isn't he?
Crazy competition though. 3 top guys end up DNF. Hardee didn't need the meet to qualify, but I'm pretty sure Clay did and I'm positive my nephew and Arnold did.
North Dakota State runner Christine Schmaltz advanced to the finals in the women's 800m tonight!! Congrats to her!! The final heat is 2:18pm on Sunday.

Good to hear it's nothing big and yeah Eaton is great.
Looks like Clay has a chance to get in due to lack of people having the A standards. Eaton and Harlan are in because Eaton has the A standard and Harlan the B (only 1 B is allowed per group in). Moss and Helwick have until August to reach the A standard. USATF has said only top 4 in each event can chase A standard if they haven't already achieved it. Clay and Arnold are the only ones left that have the A standard so Clay may get the spot if the other 2 don't get it. Arnold dropped out before Clay and has a lower best too. Only other option would be to send 3 guys (Hardee is the other as AQ)
Can't imagine too many qualifying opportunities so it's pretty realistic. Neither guy has broken 8000 before and they need 8200.
