I care. Hockey kicks some major A--
Game 7 got a 4.3/8 share nationwide. In Boston, it got a 43.4/64 share.
If NDSU added hockey, you and all of your Bison buddies would be ecstatic (since you can fill the hole in the WCHA). As a Black Bear, I know what a hockey program can do to your university. We added hockey in '77, and that's all people know about UM athletics.
I've looked at this forum before I joined, and one thing I got from reading here is that everything you say seems laughable.
North Dakota should keep one of the coolest and beautiful mascots in sports. In fact, the other schools that dropped their Indian mascots should bring them back. The NCAA should worry more about the mess in the BCS and players benefits than punishing a school for honoring their state's heritage.

Couldn't have said it better. I think this whole thing with native american mascots is not a big deal.
Also as for Hockey, I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals actually got a higher rating in Boston then when the Celtics were playing in the NBA Finals.
NDSU fans are like VCU fans. VCU fans plead that they could care less that they dont have football but I know the minute they add football they will act like they wanted the sport all along. Same thing with NDSU fans and hockey.

However, the possible downfall of und athletics due to a dumping from the big sky is just sweet sounding. Never have and never will cheer for them in anything. My rant is over, carry on

Funding hockey is quite the process...at least it is for Nebraska-Omaha. They basically are trying to become a full blown hockey school from how I see it (like UND or Denver) and in the process due to funding reasons and a move up to DI have had to get rid of their football team and their wrestling team which has won 7 DII national championships including the last 3.
Hockey is a sport that can't all of a sudden be picked up and funded, and in all honesty isn't a huge money maker for the school especially if they aren't good...
Personally couldn't give a shit about hockey but if others do good for them but I'd root real hard against the Griz trying to fund something like that.
north dakota has never produced hockey players, they are ALL canadian.
Hockey has a small niche of fans, horrible ratings, like .2 and .4 on versus/nbc, so what if game 7 had some boston people watch it, it was a WEDNESDAY night in june, big deal.
THIS THREAD IS ABOUT BIG SKY SCHOOLS DUMPING und, a source was told it will happen and that not ONE SINGLE SCHOOL will stick up for und, the nickname, the travel, them being on an island and most importantly, their hostile and abusive fans.
karma b.tches, hahaha.
NDSU and me, consider Minnesota our rivals, and Northern Iowa and sometimes SDSU, period, end of story.

UNO dumping football and wrestling had zero to do with anything other than Trev Alberts (UNO's AD and UNL's AD in waiting) being Tom Osborn's freaking puppet and making damn sure there will never be 2 D1 football teams in the state of Nebraska....end of story. They will spin it as a million things other than what it is - don't believe a word of it.
Actually, I heard over 25 mil. people in North America tuned in to game 7, making it one of the biggest sporting events of the year... and that didn't include French-language versions in Quebec.
I agree, hockey is great. Now the Eastern has a $22m hockey arena, I've advocated trying to drop a sport to add a hockey team. With as much talent as is pooled in Western Canada (probably discluding Lower Mainland) that don't go on past CHL/WHL, there would be huge numbers of guys to recruit from to make Eastern an instant contender. Our hockey program already outdraws our men's basketball team.
I, for one, would love to have UND's success at hockey.

I think anybody with of course the exception of NDSU fans would considering its one of the 4 major sports.
Hockey is absolutely glorious, my first love. I wish there were more schools in the west supporting the sport...but it's an expensive sport to support and the travel makes a start-up outside of the northeast or midwest extremely difficult.
I wish Montana had a team, badly, but I know that's not likely to happen in my lifetime.

I have also heard that...which I can DEFINITELY see as a legitimate reason for that happening. How sweet it would have been for UNO to compete for recruits with UNL. UNO didn't have a bad program at DII level.
However, I do believe hockey is another reason. How big of a reason who knows but with the hiring of Blais and a possibility of a new hockey arena that has to impact something. That is just my opinion.
Don't listen to lakes about the popularity of hockey. I love to watch the sport but just hate und hockey just as much, if not more than other sports. I go to the the University of Minnesota so hockey is Big Three at that school. I would love for NDSU to have a hockey program but it won't happen.

This.
It's insane how much youth hockey costs up in Mass. A kid I know wanted to play Youth Hockey around found out that it's around four grand for just Mite hockey (7-8 year olds). It's fun to watch and to confirm what someone else said, it did have higher ratings in Boston than the last Celtics-Lakers Finals. I'll actually be going to the parade tomorrow morning too. But ya, I would love for hockey to become more relevant in college. I just don't see it happening any time soon.

The funding for hockey played <5% into the decision. Probably <2%.
How else can you explain cutting a football program with a brand new scoreboard that boosters had bought for UNO's football team that had been used for one season, with more upgrades in the works. A program that could have competed with USD, SDSU, UND, NDSU, UNI, Missouri State for prospects at the D1 level. Also a wrestling program that won their third straight national wrestling title the night it was cut and returned home to a padlocked locker room.
UNL has some fucked up superiority complex's with UNL, and even Creighton to a smaller extent. This was nothing more than Alberts pleasing his future employeer.
The UNO hockey team already plays in the Qwest Center, a 15K seat arena, that is shared with Creighton's men's basketball team. Their on-campus arena will be newer, but not nearly as big or nice as the Qwest Center....oh and they would lose the ability to sell beer.
Standing Rock will never approve the name, ONLY 25% of spirit lake voted on the approval, and the Plains Indian Tribes wrote this resolution, 16!! of them.
Resolution No. 14-3-23-11
GREAT PLAINS TRIBAL CHAIRMAN’S ASSOCIATION (GPTCA)
Support the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policy to eliminate use
Of American Indian nicknames, logos and mascots and oppose dehumanizing and racist statement about American Indians.
WHEREAS, the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association (GPTCA) is composed of the 16 elected
Chairs and Presidents or their duly appointed representatives of the sovereign Indian
Tribes and Nations recognized by Treaties entered into with the United States that are
within the Great Plains Region of the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and
WHEREAS, the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association was formed to promote the common
interests of the sovereign Indian Tribes of the Great Plains and their members in the states of ND, SD and NE; and
WHEREAS, the United States has recognized the sovereign status of Tribal Nations through the
U.S. Constitution, treaties and by numerous federal statutes; and
WHEREAS, We reaffirm our previous actions and support the action of other entities such as the
National Congress of American Indians and the National Indian Education Association
To oppose the use of American Indians as school nicknames, logos and mascots; and
WHEREAS, We further support recent actions by the University of North Dakota (UND) University
Senate, UND Student Senate, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education and
the North Dakota Senate Education Committee in calling for the elimination of the
fighting Sioux nickname and logo at UND; and
WHEREAS, We further support the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policy that calls
for the elimination of the use of American Indian nicknames, logos and mascots at
colleges and universities; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, we conclude that the use of American Indians for school
nicknames, logos and mascots at colleges and universities continues to be
dehumanizing and disrespectful to American Indians and is a racist statement
regardless if any state government may pass it as a state law and/or policy; and
NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the GPTCA will submit this Resolution to our Congressional
Delegations, Colleges and Universities and others to educate them; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that this resolution shall be the policy of
The Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association until otherwise amended or rescinded or
until the goal of this Resolution has been accomplished.

Not only that, but we're already national contenders in the division we play in. Our club team is consistently ranked in the top 10.
The hilarious thing is, that if NDSU had a hockey team with national titles, we wouldn't hear the end of it, they'd be bragging about it more than their wins over bottom-feeder FBS teams. It's not cool to them because UND has a team and titles and they don't. The obsession lakes and JBB have is pretty pathetic, but amusing. I've never seen one school's fans have that big of an inferiority complex.
LDopaPDX wrote:Why do NDSU fans hate UND so much? I haven't been on this board for that long, but it seems like there are always Bison fans talking utter smack about their rivals.
I lift weights with a guy who played ball at UND, and he told me it was a pretty good place to go to school. He's never mentioned any hatred of North Dakota State. Just the same, I've never noticed any UND fan post a bunch of smack about NDSU. Why is it a one way street? As someone posted earlier, is this *really* the most interesting thing to do in North Dakota?
That's the bizarre thing; how one-sided it is. Then again, NDSU fans really seem to have problems with a lot of other programs/fanbases
I think the Bison fans have a little bit of an inferiority complex, being the state school and the low-priced alternative. A famous North Dakotan once said: "If you want to run a large farming operation go to NDSU. If you want to own that large farming operation, go to UND". I think that captures the two schools relationship in a nutshell.

NDSU should switch to Canadian football to save on travel and play in front of somebody who cares. They're so far from anywhere that fan interest outside ND is zero.
UNI your rival?
That may be how you see it, but I seriously doubt that UNI sees NDSU as a rival. How can you be rivals with somebody you've beaten you like Pee Wee Herman's unit in a dark theater every time you've played?

BTW, I believe this thread about as much as I believe Lakes when he said that the officials in the quarter-finals were giving the EWU players high fives.
I don't think the Big Sky is trying to use the mascot issue as an "excuse" to kick out UND. I just think they see it as a legitimate concern that they want UND to have settled before they officially begin conference play in 2012. Right or wrong, it's an issue with the NCAA, and the Big Sky falls under the NCAA, after all.
I think it's BS that they may have to change it, but if it's a choice between keeping the mascot and not having a conference, UND may just have to swallow some pride.
EWU had a similar issue with their nickname back in the 60's or 70's when they changed their mascot from the "Savages" to the Eagles. Granted, Savages could be considered a lot more inflammatory than Sioux, but the point is that many schools have had to deal with this in their own way.
The NCAA’s Native American mascot policy remains in effect, and we stand ready to assist the University of North Dakota with its implementation of the policy.
The Big Sky Conference’s position related to the university's Fighting Sioux nickname and logo is consistent with the spirit and intent of the settlement agreement the NCAA reached with the university to retire the nickname and logo.
We have made clear to both the conference and the university that the NCAA has no intention of changing its position.
If the University of North Dakota continues to use the nickname and logo past the August 15 deadline due to state law, it will be subject to the parameters of the policy. This means the university could not host any championships or use the nickname and logo at any championship events.
North Dakota is slated to join the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2012.

The seeming preoccupation with UND:
1. When NDSU announced they were moving up - UND, in a move I still to this day cannot understand - called a press conference to basically mock the move. The rivalry was already intense - this poured gasoline all over it.
2. The provincial nature of fans in the state... no getting around it... nobody outside of the Dakotas has ever heard of it, nor cares... but it's the whole damn world in North Dakota... I lived there for four years, and I still don't get it.
3. The best analogy I can give you - NDSU is little brother (despite what our fans will tell you) - SU was second best in MANY MANY ways (including funding) for decades... NDSU moving up - and having success - can be likened to little brother hitting maturity and growing bigger and stronger than their older brother who bullied them as kids... little brother can't let it go and will seek to remind older brother who is bigger now.
Is it an unbelievably petty and stupid pissing match? you bet your ass.
"Dakota" is the Sioux word for "Friend." So basically UND and NDSU, and the whole state of North Dakota have a Sioux word in their name, and NDSU fans are making a mockery of the very Sioux word they carry in their school's name when they trash UND about making a mockery of the Sioux.
