The seeming preoccupation with UND:
1. When NDSU announced they were moving up - UND, in a move I still to this day cannot understand - called a press conference to basically mock the move. The rivalry was already intense - this poured gasoline all over it.

2. The provincial nature of fans in the state... no getting around it... nobody outside of the Dakotas has ever heard of it, nor cares... but it's the whole damn world in North Dakota... I lived there for four years, and I still don't get it.

3. The best analogy I can give you - NDSU is little brother (despite what our fans will tell you) - SU was second best in MANY MANY ways (including funding) for decades... NDSU moving up - and having success - can be likened to little brother hitting maturity and growing bigger and stronger than their older brother who bullied them as kids... little brother can't let it go and will seek to remind older brother who is bigger now.

Is it an unbelievably petty and stupid pissing match? you bet your ass.
Appreciate the insight and refreshing honesty. :thumb:

Good insightful, factual analysis, TTBF. The Staters seem to have had a Napolean complex.

Not surprising, how many schools do you see in the south have hockey?

There's a lot of denying it, because ndsu hasn't done shit. Being to the quarters once and pissing the game away (ala EWU in 2004) or beating bottom-feeder FBS teams, is not success. Progress yes, but not success. Unless your standards for success are really that low, and you're really that desperate for some acknowledgement that ndsu is a big deal...    Sad, yet entertaining. Thanks for the laugh, littles.

I also wouldn't say beating two teams in the top 25 success. ODU has upet numerous teams in the top 25 in there history but we don't brag about it. Upsets do happen.

The highest ever rated FCS game was App St/Montana in '09. --- 1.9/4 share

http://www.goasu.com/ViewArticle.dbml?D ... =204858434

Here in Maine, UM hockey has been known to get as high as an 8/15 share, locally.

The Beanpot championship between BC and Northeastern this past year drew a 2.1 in the greater Boston area.

I bet the TV rating for Sioux hockey must be high. Great program they have there in Grand Forks.

Can I once again make the statement that "Dakota" means "Friend" in Sioux, which makes North Dakota State's hatred toward U of North Dakota ironic...

...NDSU is making a mockery of the Sioux by hating on UND. It's shameful that NDSU fans represent a school with "Friend" in the university's name would show such malice towards one of their fellow "Friend" schools. Clearly the Sioux never intended the word "Dakota" to be used this way. For shame. :ohno:

It goes back futher than than. After Coach Gil Dobie's Bison soundly defeated UND in 1906, UND pulled out of the rivalry until 1910. In the 1950's UND fought NDAC's name change to NDSU, which eventually happened in 1960. There are more instance, but most of you probably don't care anyway. It looks one sided becasue NDSU had been in I-AA and FCS mode longer, and have more posters familiar with CS.com and AGS. When in North Dakota, we don't talk religion, politics or the rivalry if we don't want to start an arguement.

As far as UND's nickname, there is a history of native american abuse at the school. As for nicknames, NDSU students over the years have made fun of the nickname and symbol of their main rival.

From UND's bridges site
1972 - Several UND fraternities/sororities create offensive snow sculptures. UNDIA members ask to have them removed. No action is taken. UNDIA members demolish sculptures. A Native student is arrested. UND President posts bond. Charges are later dropped. Members of the UND student community quoted in Dakota Student, "better dead than red" and "the only good Indian is a dead Indian."
1973 - UNDIA raises issue of local schools using Indigenous people as mascots. Sign posted in local business reads, "Redskins, go back to the reservations, leave their name alone."
The Seven Feathers Club is a traditional dance club for American Indian children. This club participated in UND's 1992 homecoming parade. The children on the float ranges from 3 years old to 14 years. Behind their float were members of UND's Greek community. These students proceeded to taunt the children with phrases like, "Go back to the reservation, Dirty Indians,": and "Tell your parents to get off welfare."

I always love how certain NDSU fans seemingly have a folder on their computer filled with these little nuggets of information from "incident" that have occured on UND's campus to quickly throw out anytime some form of support for UND surfaces...................

Every school in the country has probably had some sort of incidents on their campus regarding something at one time or another.........

Obama skit prompts investigation at NDSU
A skit with a black-faced white student portraying Barack Obama receiving a lap dance has sparked claims of racial insensitivity and an investigation at North Dakota State University.

The NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Club and sorority Alpha Gamma Delta are at the center of the controversy for a lip-sync act performed for 500 people at the Mr. NDSU Pageant.

People who attended the performance described what happened:

A pageant contestant from Saddle and Sirloin dressed as the woman from the popular Internet video “I Got a Crush on Obama” and performed for another student who was wearing dark makeup and an afro wig.

In the background, two male students dressed as cowboys simulated anal sex while holding an Obama sign that one student ripped at the conclusion of the 30-second performance.

Yea, but obama sucks and its only oppressing obama, not millions of native americans.

If not for this nickname, NO ONE would talk about their school, their athletics are pathetic

Absolutely nothing............

Neither does INMED, or the numerous other programs at North Dakota geared toward Native Americans, or the fact that North Dakota has one of the highest enrollments of Native Americans in the country, or the fact that a quarter of all doctors in the U.S. of Native American descent came through UND.............

My point was, you and JBB never offer up any of the wonderful things that North Dakota does for the Native American communities in the region, which IMO by the way far outweigh a few incidents that may have taken place in the 70's.
