Nearly 70% of the nearest Sioux tribe voted to keep the name..................

The Native Americans have not been pushing this agenda............mostly liberal faculty at UND and the NCAA brass.....

Neither does INMED, or the numerous other programs at North Dakota geared toward Native Americans, or the fact that North Dakota has one of the highest enrollments of Native Americans in the country, or the fact that a quarter of all doctors in the U.S. of Native American descent came through UND.............

My point was, you and JBB never offer up any of the wonderful things that North Dakota does for the Native American communities in the region, which IMO by the way far outweigh a few incidents that may have taken place in the 70's.
North Dakota as a state doesn't offer up enough, UND or NDSU. Sure there some token things that they do, but not enough. Have you been to the rez lately, it's like a 3rd world country, and people that live in the cities and towns near them, treat them like outcast. Seperate but not equal thrives in the Dakota's. When the communities on the reservations look like a regular small town America, then we can talk.

One of the incidents was from the 1990's, so please use all facts, not just one's that help your arguement.

Did Portland State get have to get permission from Danish and Swedish immigrants to use the nickname "Vikings?"

Did St. John's have to get permission from the Communist Party to use the name "Red Storm?"

Did LSU have to go to Siberia AND an African Savannah to check with local Tiger populations to make sure their nickname didn't offend?

At some point, you just have to live and let live. If you want to interpret an Indian nickname as offensive, you probably have some predisposition to being easily offended. Others may interpret it as a statement of pride in the traditions of that Indian tribe. But whatever, it is merely an interpretation of a word. Not that big of a deal....

And just to be clear, it is now absolutely certain that people in North Dakota REALLY, REALLY have nothing better to do. Frankly, I couldn't give a rat's butt about UND, but they desevre the right to choose their own nickname.

I don't think any of those groups are treated as poorly in general as Native American's in 2011.

The 2 poorest counties in North Dakota are Sioux with around 85% Native Americans, and Rolette with around 73% Native American populations. Sioux county is #6 poorest county in the USA, behind a handful of South Dakota Reservation counties.

It doesn't really matter if this rule is considered dumb or unfair. The NCAA has alot of stupid rules but if you want to compete in the NCAA, you should try and abide by them. IMO.

And North Dakota's nickname has ZERO to do with that.

What I think is funny about this is that the NDSU fans are dumping on UND for keeping the nick name. It's not their fault that they are keeping it. They agreed to change it. It is the state legislature that is requiring them to keep it. These are the people that were voted for by the residents of North Dakota which includes NDSU alumni.

Since we all know that most North Dakotans are fans of NDSU it would follow that they are the ones that likely control the vote. This is just another way that NDSU found to fuck over UND. :coffee:

I don't care about the nickname what so ever...it is just so entertaining to see them struggle so much with their DI classification and the nickname debacle. They thought NDSU was doomed when the decision to go DI first came up and und fans couldn't wait to see NDSU fail.

I'm offended that North Dakota would be so insensitive as to name a county Sioux County. That needs to be changed.

Yeah. I have a boatload of sympathy for native Americans in 2011. Gil, that might be the most retarded thing I've ever read on this board (well, with the exception of every dOpie post).

With the recent announcement by the Navajo nation that they are building a casino on their reservation, now officially EVERY indian tribe in Arizona has at LEAST one casino, each of which generates millions and millions of dollars for their tribes. New, obscure indian tribes are coming out of the woodwork to file the necessary paperwork to be recognized as an "official" tribe so they can get their snoot in the casino trough.

And we White folks like up like lemmings to hand over our money.....many, many times you will see people literally STANDING IN LINE to play slot machines and take seats at a full card table in any one of the 15+ casinos that ring Phoenix.

Millions and millions of dollars annually....many times each indian is rewarded with huge annual checks from casino profits....and yet they still (for the most part) live in squalor. At some point, doesn't it become THEIR fault?

Siberian Tigers have had it pretty bad. I think there's only about 10 left and probably 8 of those 10 are in captivity, leaving only two out there to actually find each other and mate (assuming they are of different genders... if not, they're screwed.)

The point is, why would anyone think that you need to have approval from a representative of your mascot group to have it be a decent mascot? There are a lot of mascots that could be perceived as "insensitive" if you wanted to be a foamin-at-the-mouth literalist.

What kinda bull$hit hippie un-American thinking is that?! This is the US goddamit! We're the best country on Earth and everyone* who gets in our way has two options:

1. Go screw themselves.
2. Feel our wrath.

Actually, outside of the PRC, CUB, and possibly ALB and NIC, the Communist Party really doesn't exist anymore. Heck, outside of the PRC, it's practically useless.

The one who would have had the authority to grand (or not) permission to St. John's would be Tom Clancy.

They are the one's North Dakota University was trying to get approval from, so the NCAA will accept their nickname.

The civilized world is doing everything possible to save the Siberian Tiger and they are treated better than most human populations when in captivity. Native American's

The casino money is not shared with outside tribe's. If you are in ND and SD and don't have a casino, and are too far out of the way to build one that will make money, then they will continue to live in poverty.
