The plight of the native American is well documented by those who live in the areas. However, on the flip side I've spent much time on Indian reservations and rarely do I ever get the feeling that most of the people on the reservation want to leave that life.

1. the ND legislature passed the nickname law as a cheap political stunt ONLY. an easy way to score points in ND politics has ALWAYS been to attack the Rez and/or "stand up for" the nickname... it's patently stupid - but it happens all the damn time.
2. most of the legislature is actually on the UND side of the rivalry (not surprising given that UND has the law school) - so the theory that this was done by "pro-ndsu forces" is nonsense.
3. setting aside everything else - this fact remains: for 20 years the NCAA has had a policy on these kinds of mascots - making determinations on a case-by-case basis - there are now very few holdouts with regard to this policy. The only other notables I can think of are Bradley and Alcorn St. (Florida St, Central Michigan and Utah all have the support of the respective tribes) UND - and now the state - are fighting an already lost battle, but just can't accept that it's over.
4. one addendum to why the name matters to NDSU fans - the only reason the name exists IS NDSU. the UND Flickertails - their original mascot - was abandoned in favor of the Sioux because they were buffalo hunters... seriously... that's why... again, and as i said in my first post - is this rivalry a petty pissing match between two hobos fighting over a bottle of Ripple? yep.

In most contemporary applications, green, white, and black (depending on budget and design) are used as the UND colors. When color selections permit, orange (PMS 165) is preferred for the flame in the logo, but it is not necessary to use that if ink colors being used on a printed piece do not allow for its use.

Just because UND won't be named the Fighting Sioux doesn't mean we should forget the name. We can still go to games with our Sioux gear. Say "land of the free and home of the Sioux"...You can still be a "Sioux" fan and also a UND fan by cheering the team that is playing its heart out for the University and its fans. They (athletics) need our support. Yes its a rotten deal we were dealt but lets keep our heads up and go onto that field (court, ice) and win!!!
