NFL Scouting Combine Projections are out
The grades are out on the rising seniors and there are surprises.
Here are some notes to pass along and if you guys are curious on any players at your school just ask me.
As I flip through these sheets here are the things that stood out the most.
Some higher rated players include Furman CB Ryan Steed (I have been hyping him). He is the best CB in FCS and would be a 2nd round pick if he were 6'1 and ran 4.4s. They have him at 5'11 running a 4.50. UTC QB BJ Coleman got 4th-5th round grades. I think that is too high but they love him. Montana CB Trumaine Johnson got 3rd-5th round grades. Montana OG/OT Chuck Burton is a legit late round guy according to them. USD OT Tom Compton whom I had on my All-America list last year is a 5th round projection.
I maintain my stance that App State coaching is average. They have the best athletes in FCS, according to the NFL. Brian Quick got a 2nd round grade and is 6'3 5/8, 209 pounds, and is estimated at a 4.50 40 (I think the 40 is a bit fast). Travaris Cadet got a 7th round grade at 5'11 3/4 209 pounds. Ed Gainey is a shock with a very high PFA grade while Presley got the same at just 5'10 1/8 177 with a 4.45 40 estimate. So ASU basically had 5 draft picks and about 6 or 7 legit FAs on last year's team and got clobbered by a Nova team with 2 draft picks and 3 free agent caliber guys. That isn't right.
Sac State DE Zack Nash got a 7th round grade. I have been saying he is underrated nationally.
San Diego DE Mario Kurn got rejected as a prospect.
Nobody from Darmouth got graded.
Nate Eachus ran a 4.53 40 and is a legit PFA.
Delaware has nobody given a grade except for Gradkowski who is considered a tryout type player.
EWU has no draftable guys, although I disagree because I like Renard Williams. Williams got a high PFA grade. Matt Johnson got a low PFA grade while Bo Mitchell got a tryout grade.
They projected OGs DJ Hall and Rodney Austin to play center.
All Indiana State players got rejected which surprised me because I thought Ronnie Fouch was a legit FA. I think he will still get looks.
The fact that Donovan Robinson of Jackson State got rejected is a major snub to me. He is a legit PFA.
Jacksonville State has two prospects but the one who got rated the highest is AJ Davis. I thought it would be Monte Lewis.
All of the Jacksonville players got rejected.
UMASS LB Tyler Holmes was rejected.
Liberty has nobody with a draftable grade but all are PFA or FA types from Summers, Chapman, and Brown. Bevins was rejected and that surprises me.
Presbyterian DB Justin Bethel is a freak athlete with a legit PFA grade.

Reminds me of a certain game versus Wofford...SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:So ASU basically had 5 draft picks and about 6 or 7 legit FAs on last year's team and got clobbered by a Nova team with 2 draft picks and 3 free agent caliber guys. That isn't right.
That would be awesome if we got two guys drafted again. Hopefully Middleton can have an outstanding season and get his stock high again too.
Re: NFL Scouting Combine Projections are out
Renard Williams has a chance to get drafted (probably 3rd-5th round) if he can put together a full season where he is performing at a high level. He was pretty inconsistent last year until the playoffs started when he strung some great games back to back.

I know he's a punter and not too many of them ever get drafted but ODU's Jonathan Plisco has the potential to get drafted.

DT Ronnie Cameron. 6'2, 285, 5.10 40. He is rated as a tryout grade though. Nobody considered draftable.ODUalum11 wrote:I assume nobody from ODU?

At 6'1 with a 5 on the wonderlic I'm not sure he would shoot up that far (3rd) but I can easily see 5th or 6th round. 6'1 DTs from small schools don't usually fly to the top 100 on boards. If healthy and he improves his wonderlic and runs under a 5.0 though I could see him shoot up to 5th round very quickly.bpcats wrote:Renard Williams has a chance to get drafted (probably 3rd-5th round) if he can put together a full season where he is performing at a high level. He's just a junior though right? I have seem him play and I don't think he gets drafted but definitely good enough to get free agent looks, at least.ODUalum11 wrote:I know he's a punter and not too many of them ever get drafted but ODU's Jonathan Plisco has the potential to get drafted.

Johnson will for sure. Don't know about Burton. He will need a big year. I have him as a PFA on my board right now.Silenoz wrote:Reminds me of a certain game versus Wofford...SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:So ASU basically had 5 draft picks and about 6 or 7 legit FAs on last year's team and got clobbered by a Nova team with 2 draft picks and 3 free agent caliber guys. I think Ronnie Cameron has the best possible chance THIS year to get drafted. Plisco I think will only be a junior this year so obviously he'll be at ODU for another two years.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:DT Ronnie Cameron. 6'2, 285, 5.10 40. He is rated as a tryout grade though. While I don't think he will be drafted I think he has the best shot and will certainly be signed.ODUalum11 wrote:I think Ronnie Cameron has the best possible chance THIS year to get drafted. I don't think he'll be drafted either but I could see him going to a couple pro days. Especially considering Deron Mayo from last year went to pro days at UVA and Hampton and was talking to some teams.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:While I don't think he will be drafted I think he has the best shot and will certainly be signed.ODUalum11 wrote:

Anyone from the NEC?
I would think Jose Gumbs should have a late-round PFA grade, and Shadrae King might have a tryout grade.

Is there any idea what kind of numbers Quick would have to put up this season to maintain that grade? Do you see Cadet being able to improve his stock?SmallCollegeFBFan wrote: Brian Quick got a 2nd round grade and is 6'3 5/8, 209 pounds, and is estimated at a 4.50 40 (I think the 40 is a bit fast). Also, as you mentioned, you continue to feel ASU's coaching is lacking. Do you feel this about all of the coaches, or just certain position coaches?

He's real high on Bob McClain as a coach... not sure what his take is on the rest or where the weak link(s) is.

Quick needs to have a big year like 1st team All-SoCon and All-America type honors. I would say over 1,000 yards and 10 plus TDs puts him in the top 100 for sure.ASUMountaineer wrote:Is there any idea what kind of numbers Quick would have to put up this season to maintain that grade? As for the coaches I think McClain is very good and I believe that a couple others are good. For a defense who had 2 draft picks I think that shows the defensive coaches are lacking. I don't know him personally but I have heard things about Jerry Moore's son. I know he is not considered very good and he never has seemed to get the max out of his player. Dale Jones is another one whom I think is just average and not that great. I don't think ASU's coaching is awful but I think its just average and I believe that most of the coaches don't get the max out of their players like Wofford does. Wofford's coaches get a SoCon title caliber team around very average talent yet ASU's has the most talent in the SoCon by far and should run the table but doesn't.

To be honest with you and I have said this before, the grades back me up, that Ausitn is Elon's best prospect since Nkang. He is a 7th-PFA type projection right now and I would not be shocked if he got in the Combine with a big year. He is projected as a center though. I think he could be a guard or center.phoenixphanatic21 wrote:What about Rodney Austin? Any shot there?

Renard is usually listed at either 6'2 or 6'3". His problem is that he has a questionable weightroom ethic and isn't an every-play kind of guy. He did well in televised games where that added TV timeout time gives you an extra break. Of course, the NFL has that eveyr game, so maybe it is a wash. It amazes me the kind of fat, out-of-shape slobs that maintain an NFL career by just playing a couple of plays a series. That's one major reason I've advocated reducing TV timeouts for purity of the game. It'll never happen, but it makes football look bad to have these B.J. Raji sorts of pseudo-athletes playing in the NFL despite being half-dead from obesity.

He measured at 6'1 flat. Now his height will change slightly depending on who measures him. Most folks are about an inch shorter than they think they are because of how the NFL measures.LDopaPDX wrote:Renard is usually listed at either 6'2 or 6'3".
