I had them at 10, but could have easily had them at unranked. Preseason polls have about 100 different factors in them. Montana made the cut because I think an average Montana team is still better than most MEAC, SWAC, Big South, Big Sky, MVFC, SoConn, etc... teams.

All of it.

Like I said, preseason polls really are a crap shoot. In my preseason blog I posted (still on the home page) I noted I probably have 5-7 teams in there that won't be come season in, 5-7 teams not rated that will be, and 5-7 that are will still be there but are completely out of place.

I think the Griz, having a year under the new coach and players with a pissed off attitude (at least I'd assume they would with their showing last season) I see them being a top 2-3 team in the Big Sky this season.

If they didn't have the tradition that they do, I wouldn't have them ranked nearly as high, if at all. See teams like Liberty, Western Illinois, Elon, etc...


Now, just because I have the Griz starting at 10 doesn't mean they won't be out by week 3 if they don't show me anything....or they could be #1 if they show me a lot more than anyone else through that point.

I actually started them around #15, then consulted Sporting News and USA Today. Both have the Griz pretty high, but still behind both Eastern Washington and Montana State in conference. Being that I think the "experts" know more than myself, especially on the preseason poll, I ended up moving the Griz to #9.

I consider it a good season forecasting if I have 12-13 teams from my preseason poll still in the top 25 at the end of the year.

Mine was too late to be included, but I voted EWU #1 on the basis of the champion is the champion until they lose it. After the first few teams, I had to consult last year's standings just to round it out because I don't follow a lot of these teams. I know some "experts" have my Hornets up pretty high (for us) this preseason, but I'm going to keep it on the D-L for a while. I got burned too many times last year trying to "homer" it.

Here's a recap of the registration/participation process:

1) Registrants for Preseason Poll will automatically be registered to vote in Regular Season Poll. Regular Season Poll participants need not participate/register in the Preseason Poll: The registration period will be re-opened from 11:59 am August 21 until 11:59 pm September 2, 2011 for eligible voters who missed or did not participate in the Preseason Poll.
2) Registrant must have at least 100 posts prior to 11:59 pm 09/02/2011.
4) Registrant must declare a home team and cannot change home teams during the season.
5) Registrant must provide a valid email address. Voters providing invalid addresses will have their ballots nullified.
6) Voters found to have registered under two or more names will be ineligible to vote for remainder of season.
7) Weekly Poll closes each Monday at 12:00p PST. (Poll closing time has been extended from previous years.)
8) Voter must vote every week. If the voter misses 2 weeks they lose their voting ability
9) Regular season poll will start after Week 1 games have been completed.

Note: Though UMass and Texas State hometeam voters are invited to register and participate, the Minutemen and Bobcats will not be eligible for 2011 Poll selection due to FBS transitioning.
