T. Johnson - Montana will probably be on the list.

Trumaine will/should be #1 on that list. He will be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round easy.

Laron Scott - Georgia Southern
Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
Walt Aikens CB Liberty
He will be at that level, maybe this year but definitely by the time he's an upperclassman. He's only a sophomore

Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
I'd say SS Matt Johnson would be top 5 if he continues what he's done the last two seasons. He's averaged 5.5 interceptions, 103 Tackles, 4.5 TFL, and 11.5 passed defended.

Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
Not sure I would put him in the top 5. Scott in the top 5 is a slight stretch IMO and he is much better than Heyden. I would say Heyden is top 5-8 in the SoCon for sure though.eagleskins wrote:Derek Heyden S GSU

I was gonna say, as a Liberty fan you gotta have Josh Norman from CCU in the discussion. I would not be surprised if he got drafted in 2012SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:Trumaine Johnson, Ryan Steed, B.W. Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
Charleston Southern DB Charles James should be in the discussion.

James Named to First Team of Optimum Scouting Pre-Season All-Conference Team
James Named Sporting News Preseason All-American
After earning AP All-American second team honors last season, Sporting News has named James a 2011 Preseason All-American corner back. In addition to AP All-American honors last year, James was a first-team All-Big South selection after leading the Big South and finishing third in the nation with six interceptions, tying the single-season record for CSU. Entering his junior season, James is just three shy of the career interceptions record. He set a new single game record against Liberty with three interceptions, earned CPFA Division I FCS honorable mention performer of the week honors twice, and was the Big South Defensive Player of the Week one time. He led the conference with 17 passes defended, six more than the second-place person.

I know UNA isn't in FCS but some services already list Janoris Jenkins as an FCS player. Publicity for the division never hurts.

Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
With DBs it's not all about stats. For example, if Webb has just 2 INTs this year and say 1 next year that does not mean he is not as good but could mean that teams are throwing away from him or throwing much tougher balls because of his rep. There are some currently in FCS now who have that rep already for this year like Korey Lindsey and Justin Rogers did last year. A couple of them are Ryan Steed and Trumaine Johnson. There is no doubt that those two are the top two guys now but I do fully expect Webb to be #1 or #2 heading into next year and I would even lean towards him being the #1 CB in 2012 as of now. He is the best I have seen among any of the returning players who aren't seniors.christopher wrote:B.w. webb #1 the best in the fcs.First year 8 ints two tds.Three in his first game as a freshman against fbs virginia.Int in first and second round of the fcs playoffs, plus took one to the house for 63 yards all as a freshman? Im no Coastal fan (as youd know if you actually paid attention to my info) but I definitely think that Josh Norman is one of the top DBs in teh country. He did very well against All Conference and All American WR Chris Summers from Liberty...will be a good matchup again between those two when the Chants come to Lynchburg.uofmman1122 wrote:Among the list of candidates for the 5 best DBs in FCS, we have every teams best DB, voted by their respective fans.

Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
I think Trumaine Johnson, CB Montana is clearly the #1 DB in all of FCS. He is currently ranked as the #10 overall CB in all of college football for the class of 2012 (cbs draft/nfl draft scout both indicating that his stock is on the rise) and as high as #4 by some bloggers. He has the size and tackling ability to play both safety positions. Listed at 6-2 197 but after standing next to the guy he seems to be more like 6'3" 215lbs. What separates Tru from all of the other DB's in the FCS in my opinion is his versatility, at time last year he played up in the box almost like a Strong Safety or OLB, he rolled over to Free Safety and locked guys down in man to man coverage out on the corner. He also contributed in the return game, and as a WR....not to mention has block a few kicks on special teams. With his size and reported 40 time of 4.48, barring injury and a solid NFL combine don't be surprised to see Tru go in the 2nd round of the NFL draft.
after Trumaine Johnson I really like Asa Jackson and B.W. Webb. Both of them can really cover and Asa especially has elite speed (4.40) that a true cover corner needs. B.W. is a major ball-hawk and I see him having a quietly dominant season, shutting down his side of the field. There is really no reason to throw at either Asa or B.W. period.
My sleeper in this group is DeShawn Shead from Portland St. He was a big time prospect after his Freshman year and fell off some, but he has similar size and athletic ability to Trumaine Johnson and I feel like he is due to have a huge Senior year, and play up to his potential.
obviously Ryan Steed would be in my top 5 as well.

Re: Top 5 DB's FCS level
The DBs from Appalachian State are in better shape than any DB listed herein.
They have to be, because they spent all of last season chasing wide receivers the length of the football field.
