It's hard to believe that even men put Jeter ahead of DiMaggio, Gehrig, and Mantle.dbackjon wrote:no doubt

The stat geeks have Joe Morgan, Cal Ripken, and Wade Boggs rated above Joe D, with Chipper Jones ready to pass him on the career WAR list. Jeter could pass him in a couple years.bulldog10jw wrote:It's hard to believe that even men put Jeter ahead of DiMaggio, Gehrig, and Mantle.dbackjon wrote:no doubt

Agreed. Most of the voters probably never DiMaggio, Gehrig and Mantle, so they voted for the one guy they have seen.bulldog10jw wrote:It's hard to believe that even men put Jeter ahead of DiMaggio, Gehrig, and Mantle.dbackjon wrote:no doubt

This is a poll taken at the very moment of a significant career achievement for Jeter. He's a great ball player, but the top four Yankees all-time are Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle & DiMaggio.
Jeter probably rates just below Berra & Dickey among all-time every day Yankee players.

That's the same order for the top 4 that I have.
You could probably make a strong argument that Rivera should be ahead of Jeter.

I might actually put Yogi ahead of Mantle, only because Mantle was injured so much and Yogi really played out of position a lot, in left field, for the good of the team and was a great, great, (clutch) hitter.JoltinJoe wrote:This is a poll taken at the very moment of a significant career achievement for Jeter. I also might put Mariano Rivera ahead of Jeter.
Don't take any of this to mean I don't still hate the Yankees.

And #5 is Horace Mann Clarke.JoltinJoe wrote:This is a poll taken at the very moment of a significant career achievement for Jeter. He's a great ball player, but the top four Yankees all-time are Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle & DiMaggio.

Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me. I wouldn't have voted for Jeter, either. Just exclude all people who are truly clueless.dbackjon wrote:no doubt
Make them take a quiz before they can vote in the damn thing.

As for Mantle, it's tough to ignore just how great he was at peak value. Bill James rates him as the best-player ever during '56-'57, and second only to Ruth at "peak value." And while I'm not completely sold on win shares, it is interesting to note that Mantle led the AL in win shares every year during his prime, nine straight seasons, and every year from 1954 through 1964, except for 1963, when he only played 65 games.bulldog10jw wrote:I might actually put Yogi ahead of Mantle, only because Mantle was injured so much and Yogi really played out of position a lot, in left field, for the good of the team and was a great, great, (clutch) hitter.JoltinJoe wrote:This is a poll taken at the very moment of a significant career achievement for Jeter. Seriously, if you hate the Yankees, you must hate baseball. Way too much history of the game is Yankee history.

No, I love baseball and hate the Yankees. I have no problem, doing both. My father, a Brooklyn Dodger fan brought me up correctly.JoltinJoe wrote:

Does your family have a long history of rooting for the Washington Generals too?bulldog10jw wrote:No, I love baseball and hate the Yankees. I have no problem, doing both. My father, a Brooklyn Dodger fan brought me up correctly.JoltinJoe wrote:
