I agree with this analysis. Jeez, we gave up Drabek in the Halladay deal, and what's he done lately?GannonFan wrote:As I said on another board, Huh? What have the Phils given up? Singleton had no future with the Phils - he's a DH or 1B, period. They tried him in LF and he was abysmal. As Howard is here long term, Singleton wouldn't see the Phils major league lineup for years and years to come, if ever. Cosart is the biggest piece to lose, but he's still just a single-A pitcher with a near .500 record sporting an ERA close to 4.00 - he's far, far from a sure thing, and even then, he's not going to be major league ready for 2-5 years, if ever. And considering that the Phils, once they resign Hamels, will have Hamels, Halladay, and Lee (and now Worley as well) through the 2014 season, they don't need a starting pitcher to come up from the minors for quite some years to come - plenty of time to replace a guy who's been okay in single-A ball this year.DJH wrote:Phillies are giving up a LOT to get Pence...
The Phils stole Pence in this trade - 2 very good prospects, but only one with a future in Philly to begin with, they don't give up Worley or Brown, and they even get the Astros to kick in some money to boot, while getting a guy who will bat 5th in this lineup for the next 2.5 years. Amaro's a genius.

Re: Phillies Parade
I disagree. The Phillies have a chance to win the WS this year (and probably the next), and this move helps greatly. They didn't give up anyone who might be a part of this years team.DJH wrote:Phillies are giving up a LOT to get Pence...
There is no guarantee that any of the players they gave up will ever be MLB stars, and even if the Phillies kept them, the team might not not be good enough to contend when they are ready for the majors.
This deal was a steal for the Phils. Ed Wade - the gift that keeps on giving.

The only value that prospects have is to trade them for established players. I hope Drabek has a great career, but the Phils made the right move in trading him.Ivytalk wrote:I agree with this analysis. Jeez, we gave up Drabek in the Halladay deal, and what's he done lately?GannonFan wrote:

Polanco is back, Brown to Lehigh Valley - will play LF now to prepare for Ibanez departure next season.

Poor Buckos. Don't worry guys. You'll be back to playing NL Central teams again on Monday.
Pence goes 1 for 5 with an RBI in his Phils' debut. Should have been 2 for 5 if not for a blown call. He legged out an infield single in his first at bat but was called out.

OK - 55 games left of what is now cruise control for the best team in baseball. Two main priorities: stay healthy and clinch early enough to set the rotation the way you want it. Otherwise nothing else to be concerned about until October - just sit back on enjoy watching these guys play!!

Re: Phillies Parade
Pence has had a few new guy jitters (ie. adrenaline) but looked like he finally settled in toward the end of today's game. That guy is going to be a cult hero here. Perfect player for Philly, and the missing link that they needed in the form of a right-handed bat behind Howard.
Braves dropped another one to the Fish. Looks like they can't hang and will be focused on the wildcard.

Big 10-game trip coming up, including 4 in SF. If we can get at least 5 wins, I'll start seeing the silver lining instead of the dark cloud!

Looking forward to the SF series. We owe them one, and they can't duck our aces this time.Ivytalk wrote:Big 10-game trip coming up, including 4 in SF. If we can get at least 5 wins, I'll start seeing the silver lining instead of the dark cloud!

Hopefully tomorrow is Kendrick's laast start for quite a while. Oswalt pitches what hopefully will be his last minor league rehab tonight. The SF pitching lineup would be: Lee, Worley, Hamels & Oswalt.

Damn, they duck Halladay again? Oh well, that'll keep them away from any practice against him until mid-October.bluehenbillk wrote:Hopefully tomorrow is Kendrick's laast start for quite a while. Yup, I like that too. The October series will be all that matters anyway, so them having to wait until then to get a look at him could work to our advantage. Meanwhile, we get to see Cain and Lincecum twice I believe. Apparently we need to see them a bit more if we're going to have any chance to hit them.93henfan wrote:Damn, they duck Halladay again? Woot! Mayberry keeps the Phils alive with a 2 run shot with two outs in the 9th!

Victorino hits a solo shot in the top of the tenth to complete the thievery. Phils win.

Something just keeps a Phillies fan interested when Huston Street comes into the game. The Phils continue their dominance over him last night. Clutch at-bat by Mayberry, and then Victorino finishes it off. Tony the Bastard & Madson lock it up.

Re: Phillies Parade
The only negative is that Hamels forgoes yet another 'W' due to lack of run support early. The Phils seemed to be giving him runs, finally, earlier this year, but have slipped back into the pattern of hanging him out to dry. I realize it's not done on purpose, but boy does he ever seem to get the shaft a lot.

It's all part of the Phillies plan to keep his win total down so that they can use that as leverage when they sign him long term in the upcoming offseason.93henfan wrote:The only negative is that Hamels forgoes yet another 'W' due to lack of run support early. Braves losing again to the Natinals, down 9-3 after six.
I was going to post a picture of what the Braves are doing, but I don't believe beastiality is allowed on this site.

Aug 2, 70 wins, 8 game lead.
Kendrick really got the job done, going eight scoreless, and saving a tired bullpen tonight. Pence was really sharp at bat and in the field. Howard with a couple of home runs for good measure, including a bomb to right-center. Great effort all around and a workmanlike shutout. Good stuff.

Rookie from TXST (2nd game) hit a 2 run shot off Lincecum tonight (DBacks) and he lost. If Goldschmidt can blast one, surely the Phillies can get to him....right?GannonFan wrote:Yup, I like that too.
