News from the CAA Annual Meetings via ODUsports.com...
June 16, 2011
RICHMOND, Va. - An increase in the field size for five conference championships was among the highlights of the five-day Colonial Athletic Association annual meetings last week.
Starting next season, the field sizes for CAA championships in baseball, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball will return to six teams after being four-team events for the past two years.
In field hockey, soccer and volleyball, all six teams will compete for the CAA title at the site of the regular-season champion. In baseball, a six-team, double-elimination tournament will be played over four days. Bids to host the CAA Baseball Championship in 2012 and 2013 will be solicited this summer.
In CAA Football, it was decided that the University of Massachusetts, which is in the process of transitioning to the FBS level, will not be eligible for the CAA Championship in 2011, but its players will still be eligible to receive pre-season, weekly and post-season awards. The Minutemen's official conference record will be recorded as 0-0 and it will not occupy a spot in the CAA Football standings. However, the game results will be reflected in their opponents' conference record. CAA Football will have 11 members this season with the addition of Old Dominion University. Georgia State University will join CAA Football in 2012.
In addition, CAA Football has decided to sponsor NCAA legislation that would provide five seasons of eligibility for student-athletes in FCS football programs.
John R. Broderick, the president of Old Dominion University, was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Board of Directors which will begin in April, 2012. In the interim, Mr. Broderick will serve as the CAA's representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group.

Re: COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
posted the same thing in my previous post from odusports.com. Either way I'm glad the field is being expanded back to 6 teams for some of the sports. There were some pretty competitive teams left out of the baseball tournament this year.

FORTUNE NAMED CAA WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
RICHMOND, Va. – If you didn't believe the statement, "what doesn't kill you will make you stronger," you might want to start. Need an example? Just look at senior Quina Fortune of the VCU women's track & field squad.
She's been through Hurricane Katrina and lost the two most influential females in her life, but that hasn't stopped her from dominating on the track.
The New Orleans, La. native reached the NCAA East Preliminary Round and has been the driving force for the Black & Gold's resurgence over the past three years

The former USL Premier Development League Defender of the Year spent much of the 2010 season on loan with the USSF Division-2 Pro League's Puerto Rico Islanders and was a key piece of the Islanders' run to the league title and performance in the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League. At ODU, Horst was the CAA's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2006. He was a second team All-American in 2007.
Nane Joseph ('10) Acquired: Acquired on November 30, 2010 in a trade with Toronto FC in exchange for Colorado's natural third round 2012 MLS SuperDraft pick. A native of Cameroon, Nane appeared in 18 overall competitions for Toronto his rookie season. Appeared in 11 games, with eight starts, playing 614 minutes in his rookie campaign. Made his MLS debut playing 90 minutes at New England (4/10). Played in five of TFC's CONCACAF Champions League matches, starting three vs. Montagua (7/27) and (8/3) and vs. Cruz Azul (9/21) and coming on as a sub vs. Cruz Azul (8/17) and vs. Arabe Unido (8/24). Originally selected with the 53rd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC. Joseph earned NSCAA All-American honors, first team All-CAA and All-State honors as a senior. He was also the 20010 ODU Alumni Association's Co-Male Athlete of the Year.
Evan Newton ('11) Collegiate goalkeeper with youth international experience selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft...INTERNATIONAL: Former member of U.S. U-17 residency program in Bradenton, Fla. ... Played with Ofori Sarkodie, older brother of Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie. At Old Dominion University he finished as all-time leader in saves and shutouts ... 2010: First team all-Colonial Athletic Association ... Posted six shutouts and a 1.07 GAA ... Made four saves in 1-0 upset of defending national champion Virginia in NCAA tournament first round. Named Premier Development League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007 after allowing only three goals in 14 games for the Hampton Roads Piranhas ... Three-time NSCAA/adidas Youth All-American...The 2006 CAA Rookie of the Year.

BOWIE RANKED AMONG NATION’S 25-BEST UNDERCLASSMEN BY TOPDRAWSOCCER.COM

RICHMOND, Va. – In just one season at Virginia Commonwealth University, Romena Bowie has not only got the attention of his coaches, but now the attention of national media.
The sophomore midfielder was recently named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's list of the nation's 25-best underclassmen. Bowie was one of only two CAA players to qualify for the list, joining Hofstra defender Shaun Foster.

Might just be an exhibition match in August and might not mean anything but ODU beats Virginia Tech...AGAIN.
This time in Men's Soccer. Sophomore Gideon Asante scored two goals as the Monarchs defeated the Hokies 2-0.

Re: COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
Old Dominion is a LEGIT national championship contender in both Women's Field Hockey and Men's Soccer this year.
We will see just exactly how good those chances are Sunday....as the Men's soccer team takes on #10 West Va. in Morgantown and the ODU women's field hockey team plays their 4th top 10 opponent in their first 4 games as they take on number 3 UVA on Sunday as well.
Should be an exciting day, here is to two ODU victories!!!

Re: COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
Should be a fun day and I'm sure our women's soccer team will get crushed once again. Thats the only real ODU team right now that is terrible. I'm not sold on the men's soccer team yet in regards to the National Championship contender...don't know what I think about that but there still pretty good and think they can make some noise in the NCAA tournament this year if they make it.ODUfanRazor wrote:Old Dominion is a LEGIT national championship contender in both Women's Field Hockey and Men's Soccer this year.
