Re: Phillies Parade
Looks like the Phils are about to pick up that game on the Braves that they lost last night!

Phils rained out.
Braves blow lead and lose to Cubs. Uggla streak stopped. Crappy day to be Braves fan.
Magic number 34!

Dammit, rain gives the guys an extra day off yesterday, but I have tickets for Saturday's game in Washington. Was lined up to see Halladay - now I'll see repeat of Saturday's rout - Oswalt & Lannan.

Antonio Bastardo...nastiest left handed reliever in baseball...why don't we use him more? Saving him for the postseason??

Re: Phillies Parade
If they are, I'm fine with that. The regular season is just a long coronation of the Phils as the NL's top seed. But at the end of the day, none of that will matter - the playoffs matter. If they lose a couple here and there because they are preserving Bastardo's arm for a World Series run, I can live with that. We're in coast mode right now, after this series we don't play a team with a winning record again until Atlanta comes in in September.bluehenbillk wrote:Antonio Bastardo...nastiest left handed reliever in baseball...why don't we use him more? Phils didn't know they had the division wrapped up till mid-September last year, this year it was the 2nd week in August.

So, they'll have an even longer period in which to become complacent and lose all their mojo by the time the NLCS rolls around?bluehenbillk wrote:Phils didn't know they had the division wrapped up till mid-September last year, this year it was the 2nd week in August.

Re: Phillies Parade
As BHBK said, we didn't really coast last year, this year we get to, so that's an entirely different scenario. And last year, we didn't have Halladay, Lee, Hamels, and Oswalt pitching in a row. And we didn't have Bastardo and Madson in the pen. And we didn't have Pence batting behind Howard. And apparently this year, we could very well not have to face Lincecum and Cain (both of whom were a big part of the reason why the Phils didn't win last year).Grizalltheway wrote:So, they'll have an even longer period in which to become complacent and lose all their mojo by the time the NLCS rolls around?bluehenbillk wrote:Phils didn't know they had the division wrapped up till mid-September last year, this year it was the 2nd week in August.
So yeah, things are a little different this year.

Re: Phillies Parade
Nice win last night - Lee pitched very well - only 3 hits. Hadn't realized Tony the Bastard hadn't pitched in a week. Phils are just better with Mayberry in the lineup - they'll be better next year with no Raul.

Nice rain-delayed win for the Phils. Mayberry continues to impress, and Herndon looked like Cy Young last night!

Man, I'm glad I didn't decide to go sit in that thunderstorm in DC tonight. Home already. Traffic was very light coming across the Bay Bridge, and now I can watch the game when/if it resumes from the comfort of my living room.

You don't normally want your closer giving up six runs.

The Wizard of Oz looked sharp last night! Record DC crowd showed up to boo Jayson Werth. Priceless!

I don't get that. Jayson Werth doesn't owe Philly anything. He played hard when he was here, was a huge part of the Phils success and earned the right to be a free agent.Ivytalk wrote:The Wizard of Oz looked sharp last night! Record DC crowd showed up to boo Jayson Werth. Priceless!
It's not like he did a version of "The Decision" and made a complete jackass out of himself.
In a way, Werth might still be helping the Phils, the Nationals way overpaid for him, his contract might prevent them from signing another free agent down the road.
Re: Phillies Parade
Cliff Lee screwed Werth over by giving the Phils a hometown discount. Any other year and people wouldn't be making as much of a deal about it.BlueHen86 wrote:I don't get that. If Jayson had given the Phils a hometown discount, there might not have enough left to sign Cliff. I have no problem with Jayson taking the money, he earned it. Jayson may have been better off if he stayed in Philly, but I don't blame him for taking the money.93henfan wrote:Cliff Lee screwed Werth over by giving the Phils a hometown discount. Re: Phillies Parade
Werth's play and attitude did take a turn south in his last year with the Phils. People were clammoring for the Phils to resign him at the start of the year, and then after a year where he basically disappeared except for May and September (and had the famous play of being thrown out at second base by the catcher during an intentional walk) and a generally surly attitude people were glad for him to be gone. I certainly don't blame him for taking the money either, $125M is $125M. Being booed should be easy for him getting to go home to that wad of cash every night.BlueHen86 wrote:If Jayson had given the Phils a hometown discount, there might not have enough left to sign Cliff. Went to Saturday's game, with 30,000-35,000 other Phillies fans, largest crowd in history of Nationals franchise. Just when we get Polanco back, now Jimmy gets hurt. Just finish out playing above .500 ball, get your 100+ wins & then it really matters .......October.
