I heard from someone high up the food chain that UND would be known as "North Dakota" for the near term and that there would be no rush to get a new name. That a new name is probably a couple of years out.

So for the time being "The University of North Dakota" will be the name. I would love to see DAKOTA on the front of the jerseys.

Yeah I kinda agree with clenz on this one, UND should be just that. The University of North Dakota, it sounds just fine.

And DAKOTA on the front of the Jersey would be sweet

Sounds like my message is starting to get out there.

If they go as just UND, and we get to a point in the future that Fighting Sioux can come back (and I hope it does), it is easy to bring it back rather than having to get rid of a new/old nickname.

UND should be branding themselves as THE University of North Dakota right now.

Roughriders is also the top name for the Dakota Big 3 Football Championship trophy. I think UND might want to stay away from that one, dont you? It has more meaning for the Big 3 Dakota schoola anyway. Both states are tied together with a colorful "western" history and of course were one territory before being divided into states. It would be selfish, and kind of self-defeating for UND to copy the Big 3 trophy name.

Just like many of you I think they are better off as The University of North Dakota, or The University for short.

all listed nickname choices are relevant to the state of north dakota.

State nicknames: Roughrider State, Flickertail State, Peace Garden State, Sioux state.

Red River Warriors or Prairie Dogs would be my choice. I do like the Flickertails name that was mentioned though.

Pre-Whioux era that is what the mascot was....doubtful that will ever be a consideration...such a large downgrade from what it used to be.
