uofmman1122 wrote:As for the PI calls, the first one was total BS. Our defender outplayed their WR, and nabbed the ball.

The second one was even more disappointing because the DB behind had a clear shot to INT that ball without our other DB pushing their WR down. Their WR wasn't even looking for the ball when it was being thrown. Horrible decision by our guy.
That's what I was saying....the PI was irrelevant to the play....and the first one our guy just beat their guy to the ball....everybody on VolNation was saying they'd just gotten bailed out...they KNEW it wasn't PI... :ohno: :ohno:

I was impressed with the adjustments made by Montana at halftime. Their offense had 311 yards in the first half, only 129 in the 2nd half, and their offense scored only one TD in the 2nd half. We held an SEC team to 2.8 YPC rushing, and their starters basically played the entire game. On VolNation, they were predicting 1 series in the 2nd half for the starters.

SIX fumbles by Tennessee...and we dont' recover a single one. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Forgot to add that I absolutely loved the tempo of the offense.

None of the bullshit no huddle-oh wait, this isn't working-huddle-now we want to be a spread team again-no huddle-shit, we just went 3 and out again-huddle nonsense we saw through most of the first few games last season.

This team had a nice, fixed, fast tempo, and really seemed more comfortable running at that speed all game.

It's hard not to be excited in Griz Nation right now. :thumb:

Totally agree with this assessment. UM's 2011 no-huddle looks like how a no-huddle is supposed to look. The Griz QBs obviously have some decision-making work to do (though they did better than I expected tonight), but at least they won't need to overcome other logistical obstacles that they have little control over.

One other thing, along the lines of the special teams improvement (sans PN's fumble, which I called in the bar, by the way  ):

It was REALLY nice to see Sean Wren back out there booming punts like it was 2009 all over again. His hang time, length, and accuracy getting 5/5 inside the 20, including the one they downed on the 1/2 yard line that resulted in the safety early in the third....

Brody just can't get the height needed....it's good to see Wren back, and I think he earned his job back tonight. :thumb: :thumb:

Just one question, was tonight an example of Tennessee just being THAT good or Montana just not playing all that great?

Four plays. 2 LONG TD passes, a fumbled punt and a pick six. We played them even-up in the 2nd half....It took our DB's about a quarter to figure out SEC speed and angles, and by that point it was already 14-0. :ohno: :ohno:

Tennessee was really just that much better than us. Their skill position guys were much too fast for our inexperienced DBs (aside from Trumaine Johnson), and it didn't take long for them to get open. Tyler Bray played lights out, too.

We shut down their running game pretty damn well, but they torched us through the air. We matched up well with their DL on offense, but again, their defensive secondary was just too damn fast.

I didn't get to see our games against Iowa or Oregon in 2005 or 2006 in person or on TV, so I honestly hadn't seen a Griz team that outmatched in a long time.

We could have definitely played much better, but it might have only shaved a score or two off the final.

Other than the few big/broken plays, we actually played pretty well. I have no doubt right now that UT fans' confidence for their season took a huge hit tonight.

I read the 150+ page game thread on volnation tonight after the game and I can confirm that sentiment. They were hoping for 7-5 before tonights game...now they're thinking 4-8.

It couldn't possibly be that Montana was just BETTER than they were willing to give them credit for...

Those Tennessee fans aren't too bright. The Vols looked better than I thought they would. Those WRs are fast by BCS standards, not just what we're used to, and Bray was on fire & made several NFL-caliber throws. They have concerns, like an unimpressive running game & a defense that didn't look nearly as fast as their offense (the Griz had more success running outside than in), but they still look pretty good. UT isn't a BCS-bowl caliber team by any stretch, but they should have a winning record barring major injuries.

Unsung Heroes

Griz OL - 0 sacks allowed

Sean Wren - 5/5 on punts in the 20 including the one that set up the safety (as AZ pointed out). He's not shanking things & he's getting the punts off much quicker than in 2009.

Ben Hughes - In his first start at DT, he had 10 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 2 FFs, and the safety. Too bad he's a senior.

Bad Luck

Tennessee forced 2 fumbles & recovered both (incl. the muff). Montana forced 6 fumbles and recovered 0. :ohno:

Things went about like I thought they would in the game( I had said 49-10). The vols used their athletic advantage and the Griz used their football experience advantage. I think both teams will take good and bad out of this game. As a vol fan it is a little disconcerting to put the ball on the ground 6 times. We will be in big trouble in the SEC if that continues. But I think in a lot of ways the Griz did themselves proud. It was a closer game than the score indicated IMOH. The Griz have a year in now with their offense and the vols are college football novices at this point. Both will get better, count on it.

Flashing back to the Oregon and Iowa games, the Griz got steamrolled in the 2nd half because they were gassed and could not stop the run. This game they shut down the run the entire game....good things to come from that. Montana needs to find a DB opposite of Tru and our safeties need to know where the heck they need to be. McCord was out of position a lot against Tennessee. I hope that changes.

Butterflies are gone and cobwebs have been wiped out. Montana should gain a lot of confidence from this game and I hope they take it to Poly and EWU.

I thought the Griz looked good given the circumstances.

Mental errors can be corrected and turnovers, hopefully, can be minimized. Hard to comprehend not snagging at least one of UT's drops - bad luck, there.

The offense looked good, excepting those couple turnovers, and the defense showed that 'hard-nosed' Griz mentality.

I sometimes have to wonder if some posters know anything about football ...

I had a great time and all the Tennessee fans I ran into were great and seemed very happy to have us there. The only thing I was disappointed in was the after game experience, it was really dead downtown after the game. It was a great looking area to have a huge party around market street and gay street. I had to buy all my own beer the whole time I was there. :ohno:

Lesson learned. DO NOT try to coordinate meeting up with three different groups, and that was just the group I was with.

Went with some friends from TN that really weren't into the game so it was hard to get them motivated. All in all, I wish I would have gone with Montana fans.

As to my point above, I would have much rather spent the game with you GrizFan and Rob.

It was televised, shit tongue. Griz are weak and dumb. That's what happens when you play a decent FBS school only once a decade with the rest of the seasons filled with Morningside and St. Copius State.

Scared pussies.

Probably. Now let's get back to Montana. Grizz are terrible this year and played like shit Saturday. You might be in the top 5 BSC, if you have a couple fall in your lap. I turned your game off at half to watch a rerun of America's Got Talent. I wanted to see people actually trying to win.
