A 3-TIERED DIVISION ONE?

Post by EPJr »

Friends of mine working in athletics tell me that the NCAA has been discussing a proposal to expand to three subdivisions for football. Is it a coincidence this comes at the brink of massive realignment? I think not. What you will eventually see, in my opinion, is an FBS playoff involving the four major conferences, a middle-tier playoff made up of conferences comprised of some 80 teams total; and, an FCS playoff involving the other 80 teams involved in D-1 football.

An unofficial third tier already exists, but it doesn't involve football. I-AAA is that group of D-I schools (think Big West minus Cow Poly and the Manure Pile) that don't sponsor football.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

the 4 super conferences would likely go through with a proposal that has indeed been discussed within the NCAA: reclassification of D1 football from 2 subdivisions (FBS and FCS) to THREE subsivisions (BCS, FBS, FCS).

* The BCS conferences of Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Pac-16 would compete at the highest level, perhaps with a “Plus 1″ playoff where the top 4 schools have a playoff.

* “FBS” would now be solely MWC, CUSA, WAC, Sun Belt, MAC.

* FCS would remain as is.

It should be...

Tier one- Super conferences
Tier two- FBS/FCS hybrid
Tier three- Limited scholarship

That would create three strong tiers, that I think would have some real stability.
