Tigers defeat the White Sox 6-5 in 10 innings. Also point out that Verlander got his 23rd win last night.
...former ODU alum.
Magic number is now 1...correct me if I'm wrong.

It's 2 to eliminate Cleveland, 1 for Chicago. Hopefully it gets wrapped up during this upcoming series.
Leyland is pushing all the right buttons lately. Two pinch hit home runs in the 9th yesterday to send it into extra innings.

Alright, NOW the magic number is down to 1. All the Tigers gotta do is just win and they'll clinch. Probably won't be tonight though since they are down 5-1 to the A's.

Hopefully tonight with a win and not a Cleveland loss. But I'll take it any way I can get it at this point. I've been waiting since 1987 for the Tigers to win their division.

Lost 2 chances to the Twins, to win the division the last few years. Tigers did win the AL Pennant in 2006 as a Wildcard.AshevilleApp wrote:ODUalum11 wrote:Alright, NOW the magic number is down to 1. Correct, but not a division. Until this year.

Re: Unofficial A.L. Central Thread
Of course it doesn't matter on the field, but the Twins just gave Mauer $23 million a year, and the first year is basically a bust. Money they could have spent on a #1 and #2 starter as their best pitcher now is probably a #3 anywhere else at best. There is a lot of Mauer trash talk on the local radio shows. AJ Pierzynski recently played against the Twins a few weeks after shattering his wrist, Mauer gets a cold and misses a week earlier in the season. Mauer has this thing that he needs to be perfectly healthy to play, no play with pain policy.ODUalum11 wrote:not like it matters anyway.Gil Dobie wrote:Joe Mauer is sick, probably out for the rest of the season............$23 million out the window this year.

at least the Twins aren't the Mets. Now there's an embarrassing sports franchise.Gil Dobie wrote:Of course it doesn't matter on the field, but the Twins just gave Mauer $23 million a year, and the first year is basically a bust. In other news, Tigers clinched the Al Central and a playoff berth with last night's 3-1 win over the Oakland A's.

The Mets are like the Washington Redskins of MLB. Spend a lot of money on over priced players that don't fit together. You can buy talent, it's hard to buy chemistry.

Re: Unofficial A.L. Central Thread
Leyland announces the first three of the post-season rotation.
1) Verlander (Imagine that)
2) Fister
3) Scherzer
Four hasn't been named, but I'm sure it will be Porcello. He also says that Verlander won't pitch on short rest if the Tiger's are down 2 games to 1.
Martinez is supposedly able to catch in the post-season, but Cabrera has been taking fielding practice at third base. My guess is if the Tiger's are lucky enough to get to the WS, they'll use Martinez at first in the NL city games and shift Cabrera to third. They need V-Marts bat, and Avila is too valuable to sit.

Re: Unofficial A.L. Central Thread
The team looks better than in 2006 overall, stronger lineup, more experienced and deeper pitching. Verlander is scheduled for Saturday, hopefully he gets #25.AshevilleApp wrote:Leyland announces the first three of the post-season rotation.

I agree. The Yankees will be, and deserve to be, the favorites going into the playoffs. But any one of their potential opponents, (Detroit, Texas or Anaheim), could win and it wouldn't be a huge upset.
I really wish Fox would show the game tomorrow, but with the Yanks/Sawx playing there's no doubt which game will be shown.

Great pitching matchup tonight, Verlander vs Sabathia.
Be listening in the car on the way to Fargo-Moorhead.
