Having brought glory to themselves and the Dakota Big 3 The Yotes are standing tall! Its another legendary day in the Dakota Dome. A great venue.
Dont fret about the score, for the EWU fans there is so much more they can take away from this. What a thrill it must have been for the kids from Chenney to travel all the way back east, see some of the sights, get a chance to play in a Dome, play an actual Dakota Big 3 member not a wanna be, fly on a plane and eat at a restaurant. It was probably the thrill of a lifetime!
Theres always next week guys! Chin up.

Tough one, Eagles and great win for South Dakota. Eagles need to work on a running game (even if it is to keep the other teams honest). You won't win many games with the quarterback throwing 50-60 times a game. Here at Portland State, we've been down that road before and Hubel's shoulder has not been the same (some reports are that it will never be the same).

Looking forward to seeing the Eagles play the Griz next weekend in the magnificent Rocky Mountains. Two time tested FCS championship caliber teams going head to head.
Re: #1 EWU @ USD Discussion & Game Thread
I made an outstanding upset call, even predicted a win by USD by 10+ pts. The criticism was uncalled for. It was simply anger or irritation of the Eagles fans and their groupies at any suggestion EWU wasnt the best team and would certainly win any game anywhere.EWU Ranger wrote:You expected something different? Thing is when you look over a teams statistics you see the truth. EWU didnt do as well against UW as they thought. It was an illusion of wasted yards. The passing game on its own rarely wins. The running game on its own wins a lot. The 2 together win championships. I saw a balanced attack from USD and a 1 dimensional team in the Eagles.
Maybe the injured lineman will help upon their return but until EWU starts to run the ball better they will stumble against the better competition which USD, A Big Dakota 3 Mebember, is.
And yes, rubbing this in the face of a few knuckleheads sure is fun!

The reason why we were predominantly a passing team through ONE GAME has already been explained to you JBB. But, given your mental inadequacies, I will make a futile effort to educate you once again. Are you ready for it? We didn't try to run the ball. There you go. When we make running the ball a point of emphasis this weekend, you will choke on your words.

Re: #1 EWU @ USD Discussion & Game Thread
A few things I noticed at the game yesterday.
The Yotes were way more physical than EWU. The offensive line and running game imposed their will on the EWU defense. The running game was key and the Coyotes delivered hammering out 5 to 6 yard carries whenever they needed them it seemed. The EWU running game was non-existent and not because they chose not to run the ball, they couldn't run the ball, there was no choice. They came out at the start of the game and tried to run but could not do anything. After a while they abandoned the run and went to 4 and 5 receiver sets. The defensive secondary for USD laid down some bone rattling hits. One hit in particular was when one of our DB's hammered the EWU tight end after the TE made what would have been a crucial catch on third down in USD territory. The USD defender was outsized but hit the EWU player so hard he seperated him from the ball, I thought he broke the kids ribs. Another big hit was on a punt return where the USD blocker sloberknockered an EWU player springing the punt returner for a big gain. I was suprised at how soft EWU was, not suprised at USD's physical play because that is the norm for them.
USD has more team speed than EWU. Jeremy Blount for USD easily ran by the EWU secondary for the second touchdown of the game. Him, Will Powell, and the other USD receivers as a group were faster than the EWU receivers. It appeared to me the EWU receivers were slow as they never really challenged the USD secondary deep. EWU does have some big receivers which caused the secondary to play off them and give them a cushion. I had heard the WR for EWU, the player that wears #1, was supposed to be good, not impressed. Big target, but slow. Defensively, USD had more speed on the D-Line and in the linebacker corp than the EWU offense was able to handle. Tyler Starr, a sophomore LB/DE for USD had another good game and made the EWU O-lineman look really bad. Shane Potter, Jim Thompson, and Marquis Butler all had great games in the USD secondary.
Honestly, I don't think EWU is very good, either that or USD made them look bad. The team UNI brought into the Dome last year was a lot better, as was last year's Cal Poly team. EWU reminded me a little bit of UNC from last year, but a little bit better. The score was 30-17 but it should have been worse. USD had one TD called back for a suspect holding call, one called back for offensive pass interference (a very bad call), and had another offensive pass interference called against them on a third down play in EWU territory that stalled another drive. Another suspect call that turned a TD scoring drive into a FG instead. The score should have been more like 38 or 42 to 17.
Someone posted how USD should have shown some class at the end of the game, are you kidding me? Did you watch what transpired? EWU was the team that was classless in defeat. The second to last play of the game Dante Warren takes a knee, and with one knee on the turf gets blasted by an EWU player. Your coaches did the right thing and pulled the kid and the head coach chewed him out good. The very next play, the last one of the game, an EWU defender was in the scrum and I counted as he threw 5 haymakers at a USD player. EWU got their @ss whooped and they didn't like it so they resorted to cheapshots out of frustration. Maybe they should have shown that much fire at the start of the game. You think the USD players were going to stand for that? That's how things got out of control. EWU got booed off the field for their antics and deservedly so.
Bottom line is the better team won. I doubt if they played again that the result would be any different. USD is just a bigger, faster, more physical team.

Excellent write-up Yote 53. I listened to the game on the radio and thats the same impression I had. When a team is throwing that much you are always on the edge of your seat. The big play is always lurking. Problem with the pass happy team is that passing is inherently risky. The more you throw the less likely it is to work reliably. That certainly happened Saturday night.
It was a great game! A great night for USD! The Dakota Big 3 are certainly a worthy bunch. SDSU first Dakota team in the FCS playoffs. NDSU beats Minnesota, Kaansas, Ball State and Central Michigan. USD beating Minnesota and now unseating the winners of the bill fette bowl and defending national champions. Way to go Yotes!

The USD fans have a right to be proud. Their team represented themselves and their school very well. They have announced their arrival so to speak in the MVFC and the end of their transition. You really have to appreciate what USD has accomplished when you compare where they are and where their move-up partner is. Tale of 2 programs going in opposite directions. Whats the difference? Why is one successful and the other struggling?

Not sure if you are serious with your compliment .
I was a little steamed when I posted about the "classless" comment. I also forgot to mention one of the EWU players walking off the field giving the fans the "you're #1 salute" with his middle finger. Was not a very good showing by the Eagles, all around.
Still stand by my statement that the better team won. EWU didn't show me much. They didn't look fast, they didn't play physical, they didn't look good. If they were sleep walking then they better wake up before they get to Montana. I've heard that can be a tough place to play .

I went on your board after the game and congratulated your team and fans on a great win. Your team showed up, had a great plan, and executed it to almost near perfection. I'll give them all the credit in the world, because they deserved it. I said it before, but I thought after playing UW close that EWU just thought they were going to show up and win this game. I disagree about your assessment of our team speed, and in particular our receivers, but as you only have one game to go off of I can understand why you might feel the way you do. USD was fired up, EWU was not.Yote53 wrote:Not sure if you are serious with your compliment .

You bring up questionable calls, but fail to mention a couple that went against EWU. What about the fumble that was recovered by EWU but was somehow awarded to USD?
With that said, the reality is that neither team showed class at the end of the game. You only described about 50% of the incident that happened. Altercations don't just happen for no reason, and your players were not the angels you're making them out to be. There is never any excuse for that kind of crap, but A) the refs should have put a stop to the shit-talking your team was doing before things got out of hand, and B) your QB was not on a knee when he got hit. He was still standing. As I said before, there's never any excuse for altercations in a game, but there are two sides to every story and your players weren't displaying as much "class" as you think.

didn't see the game, only listening on the radio so I cant really comment on the stuff at the end of the game. Good win for SD but not really digging the tooting your own horn stuff.
Re: #1 EWU @ USD Discussion & Game Thread
I'll agree that there was a lot of talking going on at the end of the game, on both sides. Warren was clearly on a knee when he got hit. He was stalling before taking the knee because the time differential was close, but he did get down, a two hand touch is all that was necessary. The game is being replayed on Midco at 8PM on Wednesday, I'll DVR it and check it out to confirm.
You're right, this is the only time I've seen EWU play and my assessment of the team is based purely on this game. Maybe they did take this game lightly, I don't know how they could though. I mean, its not like little old South Dakota flew below their radar as an unknown. These are the same players that beat Minnesota and buried UNC last year, beat SELA, SUU, and Cal Poly and lost in OT to MSU and UCD in 2009. Why would they think they were going to walk out of this one with an easy W?
I actually do hope EWU is better than what I saw and hope they go on to a very successful season. It would make this win for USD look that much better.

So you're saying EWU and USD are classless programs. Check.EWURanger wrote:With that said, the reality is that neither team showed class at the end of the game. You only described about 50% of the incident that happened.

What horn did I toot. I gave an assessment of the game and that the scoreboard at the end of the game was a direct reflection of what happened on the field of play. That the Coyotes were the faster, more physical team that won the battles on the field.eaglesfootball wrote:didn't see the game, only listening on the radio so I cant really comment on the stuff at the end of the game. Good win for SD but not really digging the tooting your own horn stuff.

If you guys wanted to class it up a bit at the end of the game, you could've had one of your kids peg a police officer in the back with the football. That always goes over well with everyone in attendence.
