always great to see a smaller Virginia school put UVA and Tech in their place.

a place that shows them that they aren't superior to other D-1 schools.

On the athletic field in the state of Virginia they are for the most part.ODUalum11 wrote:a place that shows them that they aren't superior to other D-1 schools.

Re: Liberty soccer defeats #12 UVA
I hate to break it to ya, but UVA really is the standard-bearer in Virginia when it comes to all-sports. Sure their football and basketball programs have been down, but nearly every other sport of theirs is nationally ranked on a consistent basis...baseball, soccer, wrestling, tennis, track, swimming, rowing, softball, field hockey, lacrosse, women's bball...unfortunately no one in VA really comes close. They also have the most team National Championships and conference championships in the state, including the most recent VA school with a National Championship. Easily the best sports facilities in the state as well.ODUalum11 wrote:yeah, maybe in 1 or 2 sports.89Hen wrote: On the athletic field in the state of Virginia they are for the most part.

Re: Liberty soccer defeats #12 UVA
if so why did Liberty beat them then? why did we beat them last year in the men's soccer NCAA tournament? why did ODU just recently beat them in Field Hockey? Why did we beat them in consecutive years in women's basketball recently? Like Virginia Tech why won't they schedule us on a consistent basis in men's basketball? I know you mentioned football and basketball already but they are really not head and shoulders above us when it comes to those two sports. Okay, maybe they are starting to distant themselves in football now but that should be expected. The point is that when I look at UVA I dont fear UVA like I would when I look at North Carolina for example. Now North Carolina is a completely different standard.∞∞∞ wrote:I hate to break it to ya, but UVA really is the standard-bearer in Virginia when it comes to all-sports. Also, you "don't have to break it to me". I know what the reality is. I know UVA has a great athletic tradition but so does ODU. Okay, I might have made this more about ODU in comparison to UVA but still.

I'll also add to my previous post that ODU women's lacrosse beat them a couple years ago as well. ODU has numerous wins over UVA.
The only two sports I'll give you where it seems they are significantly better are baseball and men's lacrosse.

Sure....there are examples of other Virginia teams beating them in all different sports across the spectrum. You are missing the big point though, however, which is that despite the several games here and there that they drop, UVA's athletic program is in fact the best in the state of Virginia. It's not really debatable.....they have the most money, are in the ACC and field the most ranked teams and have the most national championships.
What you are saying is also correct, they are NOT light years ahead of other Virginia Universities, like ODU and JMU, the way alot of their fans think they are. As a matter of fact, here is a list of the all sport champions since the late 70's:

Re: Liberty soccer defeats #12 UVA
C'mon Razor, you were so rational before this last post. 7 of your 12 were before 1990 and even if you wanted to use the VASID Cup, it's a totally bogus award. Win percentage against completely different competition? What do you think ODU's win percentage would be if they played ACC basketball, baseball, soccer, etc...? You would have zero VASID Cups.ODUfanRazor wrote:As you can see, ODU has won 12 VASID cups since 1978. UVA has won 13. Not nearly the gap they think there is between themselves and everyone else.

If you want a better comparison, look to the Director's Cup which isn't just win percentage. UVA has been in the top 10 in the country three years running. Last year's standings:
7. Virginia
45. Virginia Tech
96. William and Mary
99. Old Dominion
114. James Madison
122. George Mason
126. Virginia Commonwealth
It's really not close.
BWT, 18 National Championships?
9 Field Hockey
1 Women's Bball (1985)
What am I missing? Sailing?

Re: Liberty soccer defeats #12 UVA
C'mon Mason and Commonwealth. Get your shit together. JMU is way too high on that list.

And thank you Razor for saying they are not light years ahead like many people in the state of Virginia think they are. That's what I meant from my earlier post when saying they are not that much superior then other Virginia schools. For example, if they were light years ahead of other schools they would schedule other schools in men's basketball like ODU, VCU, Mason, etc. I also guarantee you all three of those schools would have defeated UVA last year.

BTW, one of the best ice hockey teams in the country plays out of the LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Re: Liberty soccer defeats #12 UVA
It's actually 28 national championships.
15 in sailing
9 in field hockey
3 in womens basketball
1 in mens basketball (d-2)
and before you say d-2 doesn't count, then why would anyone count an fcs championship?
Ok then.
We also had 4 individual national champions (3 wrestlers and a womens tennis player).
And yes, I agree 100% that UVA has a better overall athletic program than odu. But it isn't nearly as far apart as you are making it out to be.
This year, so far, we have a better soccer team and a better field hockey team. They have a better football team (because they are fbs) and a better womens soccer team.
Odu doesn't have a male lacrosse team so I'm not counting that but obviously UVA would be better.
However, your point about how odu would do in the acc is a silly one and really not valid at all.
If odu were in the acc, we would also get acc money from all the tv contracts and improve our athletic program all around. You play the league you are in. Likewise if UVA were in the caa they would see a steep decline in their overall athletic programs as well.
I prefer the vasid because it shows how well you do against teams on an equal playing field (for the most part).
Why would odus previous vasid championships not count? The sunbelt was a better conference than the caa prior to odu and company joining.
Some really silly arguments being made here.
