Pitt and Syracuse to ACC?

I knew that it was just a matter ot time that somthing like this would happen, but this is sooner than expected. I expected a domino effect, where the more stable conferences (SEC, Big 10 and Pac 10) would become "Superconferences" by raiding other conferences and the remaining schools (including the ACC, Big East, Big XII) would scramble to be the 4th superconference.

I guess Pitt and Syracuse are jumping ship early and aren't going to try for a Big 10 invite.

If this happens then there goes the Big East...obviously. Not only in football, Pitt and Syracuse are two of the biggest flagship members of that conference and if they leave the Big East won't recover.

Just reported on ESPN College Gameday that Pitt and Syracuse have formally applied for membership in the ACC.

R.I.P BIG EAST.

Surprising that Syracuse would do this with all of their history in the BE. They must have little confidence in the viability of the Big East's future.

I think every Big East member right now believes the Big East is coming to an end.

I think schools like UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida are in big trouble. Also what does this do for the other sports? Remember there are a lot of other BE teams that don't have football....if the Big East finds a way to survive it might lose its BCS auto bid which a lot of people have been waiting for years to happen.

Syracuse has long resented the non-football schools sway in the conference.

Why would they resent that? Syracuse has football, but has always been a baskeball school.

Syracuse really is one of the cornerstones of that conference.

Ask Jim Boenhim - he has been a vocal opponent of them.

I'm a UConn fan. I think (and hope) that UConn will be fine. It's an attractive program that would be a good fit in the ACC.

There was talk a while back about UConn to the Big 10. I think this is extremely remote, but not 100% out of the question. If the SEC, ACC and Big 10 all become 16 team superconferences I think you will see UConn in one of them.

I wonder what effect this will have on any plans Villanova has to move to FBS. This can't help.

I agree, I was born and raised in Connecticut so I'm a UConn fan as well. I think UConn being very competitive in other sports will actually help them out a lot. Obviously everybody knows about their basketball programs but they are also very VERY competitive in other sports such as baseball (super regional this past year) and then men's soccer and women's field hockey just to name a few. I think the ACC might be a better fit for UConn, I dont see them joining the Big 10. They don't necessarily play in the biggest market being between Boston and New York. I could see the Big 10 going after Rutgers before going after UConn.

If the ACC initiated this I think it's a bad move. If the Big 10 reaches out to either Pitt or Syracuse they'll drop the ACC in a heartbeat. Besides that, Pittsburgh and Syracuse aren't exactly great markets. UConn and Rutgers would give the ACC some exposure in NYC and they are less likely to be pursued by the Big 10.

I've been thinking that it's only a matter of time before UConn ends up in the ACC, we'll see if I'm right. They would be a perfect, both academically and athletically.

Where in Conn did you live? I grew up in New Haven, lived there until I got out of high school.

I think Pittsburgh actually might be better off in the Big 10 then the ACC if you ask me. Syracuse? I don't know where they belong I don't think they fit in either conference geographically.

I think Pitt would jump at the Big 10 if given the chance. I'm not sure the Big 10 wants them. I expect the Big 10 will eventually grow to 16 teams and they will have their choice of who the other 4 teams are. They can be picky. I'm sure the Big 10 would take Notre Dame immediately, everyone else will have to wait.

Syracuse almost joined the ACC once before. My guess is that is where they will end up.

One immediate advantage to a UConn move to the ACC, Boston College would have a travel partner. Syracuse and Pitt could lead to a North/South divisional split. Cincy and USF will be left in the dust.

Boston College and UConn in the same conference again would be very interesting since the two schools haven't been on good terms since BC left the Big East a while back.

Yes. They have already publically stated that they are worried.

FBS is playing musical chairs right now and a lot of teams won't have chairs when the music stops.

Dan Beebe calling Fort Worth this afternoon?

TCU may get an offer to back out and go Big XII...

It's starting to sound like Big East = Big XII. It's probably too much of a stretch to call them WAC East since they have access to C-USA/MAC to beef up if they lose too many to the ACC/SEC.

That may be an "out of the frying pan and into the fire" move. Right now it looks like you want to be in either the Big 10, Pac 10, SEC or ACC. Until those conferences stop growing every other conference is fair game and unstable.

Heard earlier today during one of the games on the ESPN Family of Networks that its pretty much a forgone conclusion that the ACC will in fact accept both Syracuse and Pitt's applications. They can vote as early as Sunday.

The ACC has scheduled a media conference call for 9:30 AM. They are getting this done quick. So how long until Texas joins with a 16th member?
