Re: EWU @ Montana
Big run on 1st down. Fumble...but UM keeps it. We knew there would be a Wynn fumble, we just didn't know when. 3rd and 3. Pass is incomplete. Not sure why they didnt run for ti there. UM to punt. EWU has another chance.
EWU takes over at their own 40. 4:45 left. EWU needs to do something now as they only have 1 TO left. Pass in the flat to Talley who gets to the sticks. Should be a 1st down. Screen pass gets next to nothing as again EWU's OL fail to block down field. 3rd and long. BLM gets the 1st with his legs. My bad, 4th and short. EWU drops it. Ouch. 2:30 left. Bad throw to a wide open Edwards.
1st down by UM and this one is over. EWU burns their last TO with 2:08 left. 2nd and 7.

Re: EWU @ Montana
3rd and 4 upcoming. Um stopped but EWU will have under 1 minute to try and get into FG range. Johnson hurt on the keeper there. EWU takes over at the 16 with 50 some odd seconds left.
BLM gets 3 on a scamble. Huge mistake, that'll cost at least 10 seconds. INT UM, game over.
17-14 Final, UM wins. UM did everything in their power to give EWU a chance to win it and EWU doesn't take advantage.

Good football in the second half. Mitchell just wasn't on today.

Good game, while I didn't get to see a lot of it.
Hope you guys get in the swing of things next week.

Agree EWU's OL line not working well - I will note that on the MT broadcast, the announcers stated the EWU was playing, due to injuries, an backup that was converted from DL two weeks ago.SDHornet wrote:UM is just short on 3rd down. Looks like they are going for it. WOW. Terrible throw by Johnson, EWU ball at midfield. HUGE!!!
"I though that was a really good call by Coach Pflu" UM announcer. That was a terrible call guy.
EWU doing nothing with it. EWU's OL is terrible at pulling and hitting people on the run. 3rd and long. BLM gets the 1st with his legs.
BLM had pretty of chances. Him watching the game tape will be a long afternoon of poor mechanics causing high throws.

Agree. However on EWU's OL, no excuse for OL running down the field not hitting ANYONE on multiple plays.Trapped in CA wrote:Agree EWU's OL line not working well - I will note that on the MT broadcast, the announcers stated the EWU was playing, due to injuries, an backup that was converted from DL two weeks ago.SDHornet wrote:UM is just short on 3rd down. Re: EWU @ Montana
EWU vs Montana in Missoula is always close, no exception today. I'm sure both teams are kicking themselves for mistakes throughout the game. Glad we came away with this one, tough for EWU to make the playoffs this year after starting 0-3

Re: EWU @ Montana
Not so much Mitchell being off as the Griz Defense bringing pressure all day long and causing him to throw off his back foot and sailing the ball over receivers heads. The announcers talked about that all afternoon and one was a former Griz QB John Edwards.

Wow, great game.
Our passing game sucked, but we had 316 yards rushing.
Props to the defense, who held them to 237 yards passing.
So much for all the people saying the Griz would start 1-3.

I still think EWU goes 8-3. They started slow last season also and went undefeated the last 11 games.

It could happen, but I doubt it. I don't think they'll beat MSU next week.ronbo wrote:I still think EWU goes 8-3. They started slow last season also and went undefeated the last 11 games.
Mitchell isn't good enough to do well without a running threat. If he gets pressured, he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Re: EWU @ Montana
This game was, in many ways, the opposite of last week for the Griz. Against CP, the offense won the game while the defense got the job done versus EWU. Also, UM threw the ball well against the Mustangs and struggled to run while it was completely reversed today (316 rushing yards, 34 passing yards). This also surprised me because—at least on paper—stopping the run should be Eastern's defensive strength.
Eastern actually had a 100-yard rusher in Talley. Running the ball is still a big concern for them, though, because pretty much everything he got was on draw-type plays. Regular runs did little and EWU couldn't get a push up front at all when they needed it.
This was a mistake-filled game for both sides (WTF happened to McKnight?), and the referees were no exception. They called some ticky-tack, borderline stuff but let other, clearer things go. I guess it was a pretty average game by Big Sky officiating standards, though.
Trumaine Johnson played great. He did get beat on the short Edwards touchdown, but he totally shut down Brandon Kaufman and showed he may actually be the best tackler on the team too.
Mitchell didn't look good at all. He missed all sorts of receivers and also made a bad throw on that pick in the endzone by McCord (if BLM lobs that ball, it's a TD).
I have a suspicion EWU may have been faking some of those defensive injuries in the second half to slow down the no-huddle. In particular, that play when the Griz were inside the 10 and two Eastern defenders sat down to wait for the trainers.

Re: EWU @ Montana
EWU improved running game but still flawed. EWU = #15
UM gains little in the short term. They were not clearly superior. Good game to build on. Montana = #10

Yeah, 300+ yards rushing was the result of blind luck.JBB wrote:EWU improved running game but still flawed. EWU = #15

Washington and Montana. Despite the loss to South Dakota, we should all be more shocked if they were 2-1.Thundering Herd wrote:Defending Champs= 0-3...

For the most part this is true, but just the fact that the defending champs are 0-3 is surprising, regardless of who they played.DuckDuckGriz wrote:Washington and Montana. Despite the loss to South Dakota, we should all be more shocked if they were 2-1.Thundering Herd wrote:Defending Champs= 0-3...

Damn good game. Lots of interesting play calling again today. Montana DBs really need to learn how to turn around.

Now EWU plays MSU with the possiblity of going 0-4, I'm taking the cats in that one.
