Nova applies for ACC membership

Post by tampajag »

Saw this on Warchant:

Nothing major (yet), and something we kind of knew already, but it is nice to hear an ACC official (better yet, the commissioner) come out and say that the ACC has been in contact with 10 additional schools, and a source confirming that Villanova did officially apply to join the ACC.

Truthfully...Charlotte should go after ACC membership. They offer more than Nova does.

The ACC is better off accepting UConn and Rutgers then Villanova and then either one of the previous 2 mentioned. Villanova would just offer a punching bag for the rest of the ACC in regards to football.

If Villanova committed to moving to FBS I think they might get the nod over Rutgers. They are a much better basketball program and Rutgers isn't much at football. 'Nova gives the ACC a Philly presence. Rutgers helps give a New York City presence, but so does UConn and to a lesser extent Syracuse.

I think the issue would be the timing. How long would it take 'Nova to be FBS and would the ACC be willing to wait if necessary.

Yeah you would think it would be a different way to advertise their program...

Thats why I think the ACC would be better off accepting Rutgers and UConn. Rutgers would add a NYC presence and then UConn would offer both a Boston and NYC presence. It's been shown that this whole realignment thing is based on money regardless of how a team might be or not be competitive in a new league.

I don't think Rutgers is that attractive of a program and I'm guessing the ACC doesn't either, otherwise I think we hear more buzz about them joining the ACC. I think the ACC identified Pitt and Syracuse as the two most desirable Big East programs. The ACC might like UConn, but they probably want to maintain an even number of schools.

The ACC already has a Boston presence, although the way BC has been playing maybe they wish they didn't.

The Big Ten is more interested than the ACC in Rutgers and I suspect that the feeling is mutual.

I think you are right. I think the Big 10 has some interest in both UConn and Rutgers, but probably moreso Rutgers.

I think what rutgers has going for them is that they are very close to NYC and there is not a major football conference that has NYC has a media market so I think Rutgers even though they are mediocre in almost every sport can pick and choose whichever conference they want to move to.

You are way over rating their value. If they were in a position to chose they wouldn't still be in the Big East. They are not located in NY, they are close, but it's not like New Yorkers are lining up to follow Rutgers football.

I just think they're a better option then 'Nova...at least Rutgers has a pretty new renovated football stadium.

If that's their pitch to the ACC and Big 10 they better hope the MAC is looking.

It's better than 'Nova's small FCS stadium.

Nova would not be playing in their current phone booth if they move up. They would probably try and get access to the Linc. They might not move up if they can't play at the Linc.

If it comes down to Rutgers or Villanova, the biggest advantages that Rutgers has is that (1) they currently field an FBS team and (2) Villanova doesn't draw. In my opinion that is probably enough, but if the ACC is willing to wait and they really want to get into Philly then Villanova becomes an option.

I just can't see a BCS conference accepting a FCS team and if you ask me NYC market>Philadelphia.

Maybe not, but according to reports, Nova did reach out to the ACC so they must think they have a chance.

I'm also not convinced that Rutgers hands you the NYC market, the main campus is about an hour away. I think the ACC would already have invited Rutgers if they thought it would give them NYC.

It's already happened, and both cases that I know of involve the Big East. It wasn't exactly immediate, but UCONN and South Florida were FCS teams who ended up in the B(C)$ Big East VERY quickly.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Rutgers doesn't bring a good football or basketball team to the ACC. NYC isn't worth that.

USF was in CUSA before they went to the Big East and they have struggled in every sport.

I know I might sound like I'm on a high horse but as an FSU fan this doesn't excite me at all. Pitt, Syracuse, UCONN, Nova all great BBall programs. Football doesn't excite me one bit and does nothing to erase the stigma attached to ACC football.
