NDSU took the step when they were ready. To brag about how long you have been in the FCS and then looking at what UNI has accomplished, I see the record of an also-ran. A team that made some noise but faded down the stretch, time after time after time. Last year was case in point. NDSU had a very successful playoff run. It was good for the Big 3 and the MVFC. Losing to Lehigh did nothing for the MVFC.

Its the Dakota Big 3. It includes NDSU, SDSU and Jr. member in transition USD.

These schools have been together on and off the field in conference play, competing for the same titles for 100+ years. These traditions have a long past and schools have come and gone. Fargo College and Morningside are good examples. But the Big Dakota 3 remain! NDSU, SDSU and Jr. member in transition USD!

As explained earlier, if NDSU beats the Gophers Saturday they dont win the Little Brown Jug. The Gophers dont become one of the Big 3 if they win either. Its no different with the Dakota Big 3. Its a closed competition. Hope youre OK with that?

More important than the actual number of enrollment is the percentage. UND is up 3.5% since Fall of 2010, while NDSU is down 0.1 %. After years of increases in enrollment..."Free tuition waver" Joe Chapman leaves and enrollment hits the breaks at NDSU and starts moving backwards. At least UND is increasing enrollment the honest way and not giving these waviers, which is now being compensated by a 8.8% tuition increase at NDSU.

NDSU was told to stop the growth by the state legislature. UND can sustain their numbers right now because a larger number of UND's enrollment is online students. They are not having the housing and classroom space issues that NDSU has had.

Tuition waivers are higher than what UND has given out but make no mistake UND gives out waivers to their grad students as well. I think a trade off would be the state funding UND gets for online only students that never step foot on ND soil. The waivers were high as NDSU started growing in hopes to attract higher quality grad students to lure in more lucrative research dollars. As NDSU became better established those waivers were to be reduced. NDSU did just recently make the Carnegie list of top research schools in the nation and I think that is a result of the grad programs that have benefited from the waivers. Making that list will help bring even more research dollars and students to the state.

You are completely wrong on the reason behind the 8.8% tuition increase. The increase was a result of the state legislature cutting NDSU's equity funding by $1.5 million at the very end of the 2011 session. NDSU was forced to make up that $1.5 million by increasing tuition 8.8% which breaks down to an average of $250 a student per year. That increase brought NDSU's tuition on par to what UND had already been charging their students. That means UND was charging more tuition than NDSU and were receiving $40 million more in state funding all the while NDSU had a larger enrollment and to this day still have a larger enrollment of students on campus.

That sport takes a large chunk of change to run correctly. Each school is allocated a portion of state funds for their athletic departments. The AD divides those dollars amongst the programs. UND has eighteen while NDSU has sixteen sponsored programs. If NDSU were to add two athletic programs their state funding would increase as well. I'm not saying it would reach UND's level just because they added two programs but it would increase.
