It's about value to your team, Cabrera didn't have the greatest hitters around him, he made Vitor Martinez and Demon Young better as pitchers had to pitch to them. Cabrera didn't have the great hitter in front of him to drive in the runs, nor the future hall of famers behind him to drive him in, Granderson with the already great Yankees hitters Jeter ahead, Tex, Cano and sometimes A-Rod to drive him in. Just think of all the runs Granderson cost the Yankees by striking out 168 times. That's 79 more times than Cabrera in 4 more plate appearances. Granderson had better stats in runs and rbi which depend on other players to drive you in or get on base.

Total Bases - Cabrera 332, Granderson 321
Average - Cabrera .344, Granderson .263
On Base Percentage - Cabrera .447, Granderson .364
Slugging - Cabrera .585, Granderson .553
OPS - Cabrera 1.032, Granderson .917

If the award is for the best player on a losing team, then Bautista.
You can over-analyze it all you want and give someone else the hardware. I'll take Granderson and the 214 total runs. Since he had a hand in nearly 25% of the Yankees' total runs (and the Yanks finished second in MLB in total runs), perhaps he was the guy making others around him more productive?

Whatever. The game is about scoring runs. I'll take the 214 total runs. You can find some reason to call someone else the MVP for all I care.
Switch places with Granderson in the Tigers lineup and Cabrera in the Yankees lineup and Cabrera's runs would be better and Granderson's would be worse IMO. Ashville is probably right, neither will win.

It's funny watching Travis argue for the MVP to be given to a guy whose team finished third.

So, let me get this straight: Granderson does well in one or two categories and is blown away in all the others and HE should get the MVP, but Ian Kennedy does well in one or two categories and gets blown away in all the others and he doesn't get a SNIFF as the Cy Young winner?

:ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

If Granderson gets the MVP, it's a travesty.

Where did I say Ian Kennedy shouldn't get Cy Young?

If the game is ultimately about scoring runs, Granderson was the most productive run producer in MLB this year. Without Granderson, the Yankees finish third. You can give MVP to whoever you want. Granderson, however, was the league's biggest difference maker, a/k/a the MVP.

Sorry, I was confusing you with Gannon Fan. 8-)

And I'm sorry, but in a lineup full of all-stars, no one stands out as a "difference-maker".

Didn't have to.

Jacoby Ellsbury is the only guy to finish in top 10 in hits, runs, HR's, BA, SB, RBI, SLG and OPS.

And he couldn't save his team from a third-place finish.

It is MVP; not league's best player.

So Andre Dawson should give his back then? Matt Kemp should gracefully remove his name from consideration this year?

From Jayson Stark:

For the voters looking for the best position player on a contender, it's tough to beat Jacoby Ellsbury. Besides his game-changing defensive skills, you know how many players in the history of the American League have hit 30-plus homers, stolen 30-plus bases, batted .322 and thumped 211 hits and 46 doubles, as Ellsbury has? That would be none.

The bottom line for the AL MVP is this... if voters choose to give the award to a pitcher Verlander wins... if they don't... it will be Ellsbury....

If not for Ellsbury, the Sox wouldnt have been in contention for the playoffs literally to the very last second of the season. The guy maybe great, but he cant go out and pitch everyday for the team... At some point even the most valuable of players need other guys to step up some in other areas of the game.

Except Cabrera is better than Ellsbury.

Name Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Curtis Granderson NYY 156 583 136 153 26 10 41 119 85 169 25 0 .262 .364 .552 .916
Miguel Cabrera DET 161 572 111 197 48 0 30 105 108 89 2 1 .344 .448 .586 1.033
Jacoby Ellsbury BOS 158 660 119 212 46 5 32 105 52 98 39 15 .321 .376 .552 .928

Cabrera is easily the better candidate than Ellsbury.

Bautista has the flashy HRs and the fact his lineup provided no real protection his walks were inflated... other than that he isnt all that great. Bautista isnt even the overall best offensive player in the AL let alone the MVP.

:? :? :?

Seriously? Runs- Ellsbury. Hits - Ellsbury. Doubles - Virtual tie. Triples - Ellsbury. HR - Ellsbury. RBI - Tied. K's - Ellsbury. SB - Ellsbury.

The only stats Cabrera wins is the made up ones like SLG and OPS.

Cabrera - 23 points higher in BA. 56 more walks. 76 points higher in OBP. Real stats.

You lose

  As long as Cabrera has short hair...

Did you know that Ellsbury is half Navajo? And a member of the Colorado River Indian Community based in Parker?

Only three non-hispanic Native Americans in MLB:

Ellsbury
Kyle Lohse (Cardinals, Nomlaki Tribe)
Joba Chamberlain (Yankees, Winnebago)

Of course Ellsbury is the only one not in the playoffs
