Horrible Decision To Start Game

Post by UNHWildCats »

Anyone looking at a forecast should have known it was going to be impossible to get tonight's game in, even a couple innings.

MLB has cost the Yankees and Tigers a game of their best pitcher, neither guy will pitch again until game 3 on Monday and its unlikely either guy would get another start beyond that, so now the teams will see basically one game from their aces.

The Tigers are doubly screwed over by this. They now have a lineup locked in based on a LHP starter that will now have to face a RHP starter tomorrow in Nova.

Under previous rules the game would have been canceled and started over tomorrow and while teams still would be without their aces, atleast Detroit would have the ability to set a new lineup accordingly.

On the bright side, it's made a series that was going to be mostly about the aces to now be about two starting pitching staffs that are both pretty weak past those aces. Makes it very unpredictable. Could be fun.

Fucked me up too. Now I have good tickets to a game I can't go to.

Stubhub here we come.

At least got to pay $12 a beer and eat a $8 sausage sandwich.

MLB learned nothing from Game 5 of the 2008 World Series, i.e. the Mud Bowl.

I agree that they should not have started this game. The weather map showed a huge mass of rain headed towrad NY. It was obviously going to rain.

By starting this game MLB deprived the fans of a premier pitching matchup. This series should be decided by Verlander vs. Sabathia, not the second and third starters for each team.

and if MLB cancelled a game based solely on radar, and the weather turned out to be fine (or maybe just a quick shower and then clearing,
people would raise holy hell.

I agree that it's not an easy call and that some people will be PO'd no matter what, but I think you can apply a little common sense. You don't have to call the game off early, just wait a few minutes and see if it starts raining. It was obvious from the radar map that it was going to start raining within minutes of the scheduled game starting time and that it would likely be a heavy rain for and last a while, which is exactly what happened.

And besides, I'd rather a few people raise holy hell than waste my starter by throwing him two innings. They had an off day built in to the schedule, get rid of the off day and have the teams play 5 days in a row.

Start the games at 7 p.m.! O, that's right, the Yankees must always start in prime time.

are teams required to actually start their announced starting pitcher? If not, if it was that obvious that the game would be postponed after an inning or two, why not throw someone else in there for those innings and save your "ace" for later?

If the Yankees had played during the day, they would have gotten the game in.

I agree. I don't know far in advance they have to turn in the line up cards, but that thought crossed my mind.

Like today.

Watch. History repeats itself. Selig is a total sellout for the corporate dollar.

Yup. I understand why the Yankees always play in prime time, but I think the greater good would be served by occasionally scheduling a post season day game for them.
