BlueHen86, you are incorrect that conference play won't continue to tell us how good the conferences are. Wouldn't you agree that if Villanova wins the CAA that it would be a down year? Villanova is not a good team. There is no longer a Christopher Whitney or Matt Szcur. They lost to Monmouth, which will not win the NEC.

We learned that Appalachian State and Chattanooga may not be as good as advertised. The Citadel defeated Chattanooga and Appalachian State lost to Wofford. The Southern Conference at least has 2 established power teams. Furman still lost to Coastal Carolina, so IMO they need to beat the Terriers or the Eagles.

Nova should be improved by the end of the season if they stay healthy. They're young and inexperienced.

Not in the CAA. I'm just sayin' ...

James Madison: DNP Towson or Delaware
Maine: DNP W&M or ODU
New Hampshire: DNP ODU or UD
Towson: DNP JMU or UMass
Old Dominion: DNP UNH or UM
Delaware: DNP JMU or UNH
William & Mary: DNP UMass or UM
Massachusetts: DNP W&M or Towson
Rhode Island: DNP UR or VU
Richmond: DNP VU or URI
Villanova: DNP UR or URI

There are always 'winners and losers' in such scenarios, and it's not all the 'lack' of field play between some teams. There are winners and losers from a scheduling standpoint, too.

CAA championships don't mean squat. That's all that is affected by the fact that they don't all play each other.

Not really. Were you not saying that the CAA doesn't play it all out on the field? Who cares? If a team like UD gets into the playoffs because they don't face JMU and UNH in the regular season, but then goes on to win the national championship, it doesn't count?

No, it actually doesn't. You weren't aware of that rule change?

I thought once we dumped Northeastern and Hofstra the rule was retracted. :?

Chatty lost to The Citadel, generally that rules any team out of the playoffs. I think until Chatty starts winning in the SoCon, any discussion of them in the playoffs seems premature.

CAA is 18-2 against out-of-conference FCS opponents & 1-9 against the FBS. 8/11 teams have a winning record.

SoCon is 9-1 against out-of-conference FCS opponents & 0-5 against the FBS. 5/9 teams have a winning record.

MVFC is 9-4 against out-of-conference FCS opponents & 2-8 against the FBS. 3/9 teams have a winning record.

Big Sky is 2-2 against out-of-conference FCS opponents & 1-9 against the FBS. 3/9 teams have a winning record.

Don't really see how the CAA is down. It actually seems better. :?
All ooc opponents are not created equal, bro....

There is a definite perception that the league is down. Also in part because the conference is slowing disintegrating (like the Big East). Delaware was 2 points from an FCS trophy. They are now struggling to beat West Chester. VMI almost beat a CAA team. Richmond beat Duke then lost by 24 to JMU. UMass is down for sure. So is Nova, another playoff team from last year.

Imagine that Towson & Maine could be in the playoff field this year. That's how crazy things have been. Neither will win the FCS crown.

Huh?

VMI trailed W&M 24-0 before scoring a TD with 3 minutes left. Final score 24-7.
They trailed UR 34-3 in the fourth, then scored two TD's and a safety in garbage time. Final score 34-19.

FYI, Delaware State--the Keydets only close loss--isn't in the CAA.

He didn't say this year. I'm sure if you look back far enough, you can find a case when VMI almost beat a CAA team. Unfortunately, the NCAA only has 10 years worth of stats on-line.

Volatile year for the CAA to be sure. Down? Probably.

Traditional powers Delaware and Villanova are in transition, although Villanova should still be better than they have shown thus far....and may yet turn it around.
Delaware is still capable but youth has hurt their depth.
Richmond has the players, but with the coaching upheaval likely will continue to slide.
William and Mary has been hurt by injuries on the offense. Paulus may help but they will need to re-establish a running game as well.

Maine and Towson are pleasant surprises
UMASS no longer counts.

ODU is anomalous in that it is in reverse transition. Some second team players are actually better in than starters; to be expected with a startup program
Look for ODU to be a force starting next year.

JMU is the class of the CAA this year.
Watch out for Maine, however.

Hehe UNH looks great so far and is ranked higher than JMU in at least one poll. My bad;)
