Dude, have you ever been south of Boston? I have no idea how you can come up with Charlotte being the 2nd most important market in SE even excluding Florida. They are just 2nd largest in their own state behind the Triangle (check out the latest numbers).

I am still amazed at the incompetence of Kyle the Kommissioner in passing on grabbing the 49ers as associate members for the Big South. What could possibly be the downside for a league full of schools looking to move on? Something tells me we could draw more in Lynchburg with Charlotte in the house than Presby or Chuck South.
"Dude"........I live in San Diego and Maine.......don't really give a rats ass about the Southeast. Let me know the next time that the "Triangle" gets an NBA or NFL franchise.

By the way.........Charlotte is #24........the "Triangle" is #27. ;)

Remember that it's not just the size of the market, even though that's important. But ESPN Regional is based in Charlotte for strategic reasons. They are very close to UNC and Duke for basketball, and they are very close for SEC games. Have you ever noticed why UConn gets on national TV for football? Because of ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.

You are referring to outdated info, mainejeff. Fresh off the presses:

http://www.tvb.org/media/file/TVB_Marke ... _RANKS.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And for the record, I have been in Texas for over two decades. And even I have a better grasp of geography. And if MLB & NFL franchises were being determined today, San Diego would be a hard sell. Be happy you have what you have.

Charlotte is a city in trouble these days with the banking meltdown (we're looking at you BoA). Meanwhile the research Triangle is in a solid growth spurt of upper income opportunities that make it attractive to business. And once again, I have never lived in the Carolinas or have any desire to do so.

The point remains that Kyle has once again shown his lack of vision or leadership by rebuffing the 49ers. It wasn't enough that he presided over the death of the Southwest Conference. It appears he wants to let another wither away as well.

You realize that one is including Fayetteville (Fort Bragg, Pope AFB) as well? That's like the Charlotte market claiming Columbia. True, Fayetteville "IS" in the Raleigh TV market, but if you've ever seen an App/49er TV market debate on AGS you'll know I don't put much faith in just "being" in a TV market. Just saying.

That's just how Nielsen couples the micro-markets with the majors. This was apparently the first time ever that the Triangle market was larger than Charlotte. They compile these market maps based areas of dominant influence.

Off topic a bit, but ECU is really in a crappy TV market. I've driven through that green area from Roanoke Island to Raleigh and it's nothing but depressing small towns surrounded by swamps and tobacco fields. It's a wonder they draw so well.

I like the way this guy thinks.

Can anyone post up or link UNCC's proposed schedule to date?

I've seen comments that the CAA 'all or nothing' offer is open-ended. Does anyone know if this is true? If the offer still stands, simply from a scheduling standpoint, UNCC needs to find a way to awkwardly ease into the CAA.

Otherwise, I get the impression UNCC feels they can pull off a UTSA-like start-up transition into an FBS conference affiliation, with their eyes most likely on whatever the CUSA-East ends up looking like.

To me that would be trading a strong basketball conference affiliation for 'crap' just to get their foot in the FBS door. I don't believe CUSA currently has what would be considered a 'Top 65' basketball program, whereas the CAA & A10 probably have 10 or more.

They kill 2 birds with one stone -- get football into FBS, and find a b-ball conference where they might actually win a few games ...

ODUalum11 wrote:.... Also whats to say they will actually be successful when they start football? Not saying they will or won't be, also have to remember they turned down a SOCON offer as well, correct? Another top FCS conference. I think they are in for a major challenge with the market they are going to be located in with two professional sport franchises and numerous BCS and FBS schools nearby.
I don't believe the SoCon made any offers to UNCC.

Here is a link to the char49ers.com schedule page ...

and it only has 10 games - LOL - I'm just trying to make some sense out of all of it.

The difference for 2013 seems to be the Presbyterian game on the 28th - I still can't figure if it's going to be played, or got dropped or bought-out.

So, for '13 and '14 they have a home&away with ODU, and start a series with GSSU and maybe Furman. Heavy on Big South, with a little SoCon mix in the second year.

And the SoCon mix is odd in the sense that the games fall in what is essentially the 'thick' of the conference schedule - that does not happen very often, at least in recent memory.

We still play Presbyterian in '13. It was added just a few weeks ago and they probably haven't updated the schedule on the site. Links to the Goldmine blog articles on it are in the thread above. We aren't picking up a 12th game in '13 but we plan to in '14 so we still have one that year.

Charlotte is also home to NASCAR, not just Bank of Screw over America. Both are in trouble and surely affecting local growth.

I predict the 49ers will be just fine. They are in a good market for football. The economy there is not a dire as a few of the posts here would imply. My brother lives there, and I grew up in the area. It is doing quite well considering. They will find some teams willing to come to them. Still, too bad they can't work out a conference affiliation.
