For some reason I don't hate the Bruins. Can't stand RedSox nation, definitely don't care for the Pats, and if I cared about the NBA I wouldn't like the Celtics. But the Bruins... they are OK in my book. Was nice to see Recchi get the team MVP jacket last night. He's one I would have loved to see stay in Philly all these years.

Yes, it's tough competing with MLB playoffs and NCAA and NFL in full swing, but last night was a really great opening to the season. Versus had the Bruins raising the Cup banner in a cool ceremony and then the Flyers beating them in a very entertaining game. Then the Pens/Canucks as a nightcap in a OT shootout game (too late for me).

After the game last night, the Flyers said they felt it was a slap in the face to have the Bruins raise the banner before the game.
Tough shit Flyers, dont like it? Next time don't get swept from the playoffs by a combined score of 20-7.
If anyone should feel they been slapped in the face, it should be Flyer fans for how pathetic their team performed in last years playoffs.

and so begins the long and arduous march of meaningless games... they should just play a round-robin schedule with each team playing a home-and-home against ever other team (62 games) and take the 16 teams with the most points - put them in a tournament seeded 1-16 and let them duke it out... that would be more interesting. (of course - you could save even more time by contracting Florida and Phoenix)

"You come to a game here and they're raising the banner, and it's pretty much a slap in our face," said Giroux, whose team was swept by Boston in last season's conference semifinals. "It's a motivation to get payback. Even if it's just the first game of the season, it's good for our ego, and everybody was just ready to go tonight."

MLB's regular season is supposed to be a long grind - the sham of MLB IS the playoffs.Grizalltheway wrote:Pales in comparison to MLB-162 games followed by just a month of playoffs.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:and so begins the long and arduous march of meaningless games... they should just play a round-robin schedule with each team playing a home-and-home against ever other team (62 games) and take the 16 teams with the most points - put them in a tournament seeded 1-16 and let them duke it out... that would be more interesting. I'd rather have a two leagues play a full table and have the winners of each regular season meet in the World Series...
expanded playoffs in MLB are the problem... not the solution.
in the NHL - regular season games are rendered completely meaningless by virtue of how many teams make the postseason.

The regular season eliminates half the teams and you don't think the chase for the final spots down the stretch is good? You just don't like hockey.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:in the NHL - regular season games are rendered completely meaningless by virtue of how many teams make the postseason.

Fair - the last month or so of the NHL regular season is almost as good as the playoffs...89Hen wrote:The regular season eliminates half the teams and you don't think the chase for the final spots down the stretch is good? When were they supposed to raise the banner? I swear Philadelphia sure picks the most ardent things to use a motivation. Giroux said what any decent coach or athlete would be thinking in that moment... "that should have been us, damn it"
then use that anger as motivation and drive for the new season...

Wild open with 2 points and a nice 4-2 win over Columbus. Looks like the high stakes trades are paying early dividends for Minnesota.

Ran into 3 Winnipeg fans at the sports memorabila show yesterday. $3,000 for the last seats they saw scalped for the new Winnipeg Jets. Lot cheaper to drive to Minnesota, get a hotel and see the Wild play.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:Wild open with 2 points and a nice 4-2 win over Columbus. The waiting list for season tickets is very long too.

I hope so. Canada should have more NHL teams. They gotta get a team back to Quebec and if the NHL needs revenue sharing to make it happen so be it. Moving teams out of Canada and placing teams in US warm weather cities may bring in money short term, but it can't be good for the sport in the long run.dbackjon wrote:Gil Dobie wrote:

The problem was the economics of the game - which have since been rectified.

Islanders to Hamilton, then we can get the Caps back in the division with the Flyers, Pens, Rangers and Devils.Grizalltheway wrote:Panthers to Quebec City, Coyotes to Saskatoon.
