citdog, explain this to me. Why, after learning lessons during the Revolutionary War, did the South march across an open field shoulder-to-shoulder against an enemy that controlled the high ground? And why not cross the field just before sunrise so that, at first light, you were eyeball to eyeball with an outnumbered enemy? Is there some background in military tactics that I'm missing here?

You're talking about old military tactics. When smooth-bore guns were used, armies would group their men together so that they could exact more damage. Those muskets were only accurate to about 25 yards. You could aim at the guy in front of you, but hit the guy 4 people down. The French still fought like this in WW1 and got slaughtered by the Germans.
