Red Sox May Pay Heavy Price To Rival For New Manager

Post by UNHWildCats »

Today GM Ben Cherington has been going over a list of Manager candidates that he will or has already presented to ownership. Tomorrow once he is officially named the new GM, Cherington will begin lining up interviews with these candidates.

The two names that top the list are currently employed within the American League East and would require compensation to get them, but both are employed by teams that seem willing to allow them to leave if thats what they want.

Toronto has a policy of not standing in the way of employees moving on if they want, so Boston may find it easy to hire John Farrel as their new manager, the one time Sox pitching coach and thought to be Sox future manager in waiting, left the Sox after the 2009 season to take over the Blue Jays, to get him the Red Sox would probably have to part with a couple top level prospects, but also could offer the Blue Jays a couple major league players in Josh Reddick or Kevin Youkilis.

The other name at the top of the list is Rays managers Joe Maddon. Maddon has one year left on his contract and will be due a nice raise once his deal is up, the Rays possible reluctance to invest large dollar amounts in a manager could help the Sox get Maddon should he be interested. Boston could likely get Maddon for a lower compensation cost since his future in Tampa is in doubt, but it would still be a decent prospect.
