Summit teams leaving

Post by Darell1976 »

Another Summit League team is about to say goodbye...Oral Roberts. ORU will be the 20th team to leave the Summit since 1991.

http://orugoldeneagles.com/ViewArticle. ... =205321822" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thats leaves the Summit looking for replacements, especially if teams like Oakland, IUPUI, and IPFW bolt as well. Replacement teams being thrown around are Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State (MN) (both DII), Lindenwood, Grand Valley State. Basically the Summit will look nothing more than a glorified Great West Conference but with DII teams. Joining the Summit this season is South Dakota, next year will be Nebraska-Omaha(DII). SUU leaves next year for the Big Sky.

Current Summit Schools (2011) 10 teams
NDSU
SDSU
USD
Oakland
Western Illinois
SUU
IPFW
IUPUI
UMKC
Oral Roberts

2012 (if ORU leaves) 9 teams
NDSU
SDSU
USD
Oakland
Western Illinois
IPFW
IUPUI
UMKC
UNO

Summit is evolving, and in some ways, for a better geographical fit.

Two outliers - SUU and Centenary, have gone. SUU is a much better fit in the Big Sky.

The remaining "western" teams (SDSU, USD, NDSU, UNO, UMKC, WIU) have a pretty tight radius (WIU is a little ways away). Summit needs to add some eastern teams to the IUPUI/IPFW/Oakland trio - they would be vulnerable to a raid by another conference.

Thats where a team like Grand Valley State would fit, but I don't know if they would drop football (DII Powerhouse), just to join the Summit.

They wouldn;t have to drop - the Summit could start sponsoring football, or insist the MVFC take them, or they are pulling all teams, leaving the MVFC depleted (especially if the Summit took two DII upgrades that had football).

1. MVFC will NOT add any teams (remember they wouldn't take UND and took USD as a ploy to keep USD in the Summit).
2. Summit will NOT sponsor football, that could require teams like NDSU, SDSU, USD, and WIU to leave the MVFC...no way in hell would they vote for that.

No way that Mankato or St. Cloud are moving up...

Minnesota Twin Cities will never allow anyone else to become D-I.

Where are they going anyway?

Far-flung member of the Horizon? MVC? Southland? WAC?

on the plus side - odds of NDSU making the tournament improve ;-)

Southland Conference.

This is true. But as one person put on BVille their seeding will take a hit, but its not like NDSU or any Summit team will knock off Duke or North Carolina in the NCAA finals.

SU will be a low-major for the foreseeable future - I'm fine with 14-16 seeds... that's reality... making it matters more to me at this point.

With UND in the Big Sky i see 14-16 seeds too. Unless you are in a major or even mid major conference your seeding really doesn't matter. You will never see a #1-10.

Montana was a 12 seed a couple years ago. Weber has 10 seed potential this year.

Under this new rule, to hold an auto bid to the tournament, a Division I conference must have seven men's basketball playing members with no continuity of membership requirements. Six of those schools must conduct conference play in five or more other sports.
UNO isn't a full DI member until 2015..so the Summit is down to 8 when ORU leaves next season.

Is there any "for real" indication that Grand Valley is actually considering moving up? I haven't heard anything about that. They've always seemed to like being the top dog in D-II.

Just schools that are close to Summit members being thrown around. Nothing factual. Just like Mankato and St. Cloud is close to NDSU, SDSU, and USD.

Which is exactly why I brought up a certain school I've been banned from naming to get called up to the Big Sky....

As long as they don't drop below 7 members and UNO doesn't become #9 until 2015 (they are in transition from DII). So from 2012-2014 they are at 8. The NCAA got rid of the Core Membership policy where a team had to be in a conference for so many years to be a core member and you had to have I believe 6 core members..but thats all gone. Now its 7 members.

summit's RPI is still better than big fluffy's after ORU leaves. Im not too worried.

NDSU, Oakland, IUPUI , SDSU are solid basketball schools. UMKC should be better.
