There's no way any SWAC team makes the playoffs this year. Alabama A&M isn't good enough (especially since they need to lose to not win the East), Jackson State is on a postseason ban, & Alabama State has to play the Turkey Day Classic on Thanksgiving. It won't happen.

It doesn't matter if the FBS game is a loss, when you evaluate SOS you don't look at only your wins, you look at the whole schedule. There's no getting around the fact that ODU's SOS, especially considering they don't even play Maine and UNH in conference, is weak. Don't fret it, though, ODU is a mortal lock for the playoffs at 8-3. Win another game and you're in for certain. Lose 'em both and you're probably still in, but I would be a little nervous.
It seems you are coming in during the middle of the conversation. If trying to choose between CAA teams other than ODU (And UofR) this year, why would you not throw out the 1-A's after every team lost to them. If you got waxed by a top 5 1-A and another team got waxed by a #58 1-A, are you looking for extra credit for scheduling? I'm saying the 1-A's only matter if you win when comparing them against another team that played a 1-A.

Now if you are comparing them to ODU (no 1-A), then the only way it would be close is if ODU had one more win, and that is no guarantee depending on the rest of the schedule. Lets take Delaware at 7-4 vs. ODU at 8-3. ODU has one more win which is offset by the Navy game. You got a D-2 which may offset a (relatively?) close head-to-head matchup. DSU equals whatever OOC we have left. Then it comes down to the other 7 conference games. You got Towson and Maine on the road. We got Towson and JMU at home. I would have to give you the edge here.

That's the point I was trying to make with the "throw out the 1-A's" comment.

Now you're offsetting head to head matchups? And I-A games only matter against other teams that played I-A teams? You're all over the board here.

There's no way any SWAC team makes the playoffs ANY year. Take it to the bank that the NCAA will NOT put a team in the playoffs from a conference that won't send it's first place team.

Do I have to say it again? ODU at 8-3 is a mortal LOCK.

Let's go through the scenario of comparing a 7-4 W&M team with a 7-4 UD team. Then let's do an 8-3 ODU team against a 7-4 UD team. How would you break it down? You can project the final 2-3 games any way you want. I'm not concerned with which team you think is better. I'm concerned with your process of comparison.

This isn't that hard...an 8-3 ODU (top 4 CAA finisher) is a stone cold lock...especially in such a down year for the FCS. A 7-4 Delaware team needs a lot of help to get in: Finishing ahead of JMU and Towson would be a start.

No wait. Gannonfan and I are debating the "process" of determining who is in and who is left out. I'm saying that you can't just look at overall SOS. Often times, the overall SOS can be skewed depending on whether or not you played a 1-A. And if two, or more, teams in the comparison played a 1-A, and all lost against them, you can't give more credit (overall SOS) to the team that played the higher ranked 1-A. Then there is the D-II factor, and that gets a little more complicated. I want to know how Gannonfan, or anyone else, would break down the comparisons.

Does an 8-3 Portland State team get in with 6 DI wins?
