The Cuddyer talk is getting louder in Philly. Supposedly he & Thome are great friends & Thome has already been talking to him....

yep. expect that if cuddy signs nathan will be next... those three are pretty tight, and all want a ring very badly (and i think have realized that playing with Joe Mauer will never allow that)bluehenbillk wrote:The Cuddyer talk is getting louder in Philly. at that point i'll just buy a phillies cap and start cheering for them full time...

Ah, TTBF, reminds me of my youth in '65, when I quixotically adopted the '65 Twins of Grant, Kaat, Killebrew, Allison, Oliva, Versalles, Battey etc. against the hated (for me) Dodgers.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:yep. expect that if cuddy signs nathan will be next... those three are pretty tight, and all want a ring very badly (and i think have realized that playing with Joe Mauer will never allow that)bluehenbillk wrote:The Cuddyer talk is getting louder in Philly. We'll see if firing the inept Bill Smith enables the Twins to turn around the team this offseason... i kinda doubt it

Phillies are now going hard after Ryan Madson. I could see 3 yr / 30 mil. Sounds good to me.

I heard a rumor that Scott Boar-ass won't let Madson come back because the Phils won't give Ryan a 6-year deal.Seahawks08 wrote:Phillies are now going hard after Ryan Madson. I could see 3 yr / 30 mil. Sounds good to me.

That's what I like to see!
And I can't imagine the Phils giving a closer more than 4 years. And at that, the deal would probably be 3 years with a 4th year option. No way in hell a closer or any RP deserves 6 years.

4 years/$40 million, with a vesting option for the fifth year. That's a BRUTAL contract, even for a great reliever like Madson.

The years or the money? - money-wise this only puts him at something like 4th or 5th highest paid closer in baseball, so it's not expensive that way. And he's 31 so this takes him through the prime of his career. I'm not sure you'd get a cheaper contract for an elite closer.Fact wrote:4 years/$40 million, with a vesting option for the fifth year. The years and the money are the problem. You can get good relievers who aren't "closers" for much cheaper than that. The fact that he'll be the fourth or fifth highest paid closer in baseball is a testament to just how stupid baseball people have become when it comes to the "closer", which is a crappy concept in the first place, and it isn't even the most efficient way to use a bullpen. Ryan Madson was more valuable when he would go in during the seventh or eighth inning to shut down the best players in a particular lineup instead of simply protecting a lead in the ninth to get the "save", which is perhaps the worst stat in all of baseball.
When you can get a solid starting pitcher for the same price, it's a stupid contract.

Re: Phillies Parade - 2012
Actually, the reports this morning are 4 years - $44 million. If the Phils bring him back at that money & sign Cuddyer who was in town yesterday on a "recruiting visit" then I think it's getting more presumptuous that the J-Roll era in Philly is over.Fact wrote:4 years/$40 million, with a vesting option for the fifth year. Re: Phillies Parade - 2012
I don't necessarily disagree about the view on closers in general - I too think it's one of the more overestimated things in baseball. But in reality, the Phils have had this contract with their closers for years (Lidge was getting $37M over 3 years before this) so if anything the Phils are actually going a cheaper route than they have before. We're saving money!Fact wrote:The years and the money are the problem. You can get good relievers who aren't "closers" for much cheaper than that. Re: Phillies Parade - 2012
Take the option out and I think it's a mediocre deal. And thank God the deal has stalled because I am definitely not a fan of signing a RP for more than 3 years, let alone over 4 years. But I can deal with a 4 year / 44 mil contract since like Gannon said, the phils would be paying him less per year than Lidge. And he's a better pitcher than Lidge.

Papelbon signed as the new closer - thanks for the memories Madson. Bastardo locked in now as the set-up man.

With Wiggy, i guess Polanco can be traded? Nice player, but where does he play? And this puts an end to the Cuddyer rumors. I like it since he was a much cheaper option than Cuddyer and has the position flexibility. Problem with him is his mediocre AVG and bad OBP.

Laynce Nix signed for two years. Another solid bench player to bring in versus righties.

Phils are reportedly shopping Polanco and are in negotiations with Aramis Ramirez to replace him at 3B.

Yep, heard that too - from Seth Everett. Also, J-Roll's agent is still looking for 5 years apparently...not gonna happen in Philly, that's for sure.

No, but if you heard ther same Seth Everett segment that I heard it sounds like nobody is looking to give Jimmy 5 years.bluehenbillk wrote:Yep, heard that too - from Seth Everett. Also, J-Roll's agent is still looking for 5 years apparently...not gonna happen in Philly, that's for sure.

WTF they are looking to trade Shane? Let's see, don't re-sign Jroll and then trade Shane. I guess Thome will be the leadoff hitter this year.
