I have another question for Lakes or any other NDSU fan who thinks the Settlement Agreement trumps "the Policy:"

The Settlement Agreement says UND will choose and implement a new nickname by August 2011. Separate and apart from whether they actually have to change nicknames, they missed the date. So by your logic, if NDSU chooses and implements a new nickname tomorrow, this vaunted Settlement Agreement would still permit the NCAA to keep NDSU on the "hostile and abusive" list and deny it access to post-season competition forever.

Please explain, without reference to your historic hatred of UND, how that would be fair or appropriate.

This just in...

NCAA is now suing the University of South Carolina over it's use of a fighting animal as it's mascot.

"The Gamecock if offensive to all those in the animal rights movement and reminds of a time when animals were meant for sport"

ALso on the list is Vanderbilts Commodore citing, "The Commodore, named after Commodore Vanderbilt, reminds us of the horros of capitalism and therefore, is offensive to the poor in our society."

The closest Chippewa Tribe to Warroad is the Red Lake Band of Chippewas which is not even in Roseau County. The state of Minnesota can change Warroad's name any time they want. So now the NA on the reservations that wear Sioux gear are not only racists they are ignorant. I will let my friends and relatives (who are Chippewas) who live in Devils Lake know this I am sure they will get a big   over this.

Speaking with colleagues who served at the Standing Rock Reservation while assigned to the Aberdeen Region of the Indian Public Health Service have indicated to me that individual members of that tribal nation were never allowed to vote on the Fighting Sioux issue. Can you confirm that?
Standing rock although given petitions by tribal members were rejected by the tribal council to allow a tribe-wide vote. Of course what happened at Spirit Lake (tribe-wide vote = tribal approval) made up this councils decision to silence their member's view on the isssue.
As a United States Army veteran, and with tomorrow being Veteran’s Day, I find that to be a sad chapter in American history when our own citizens are denied the fundamental right to vote after so many gave so much to insure that right. Enough said.

First off..thank you for your service  secondly I agree everyone should have a voice and a right to vote, but its a reservation its their soverign nation so "we" can't tell them they should vote, the tribal council only lets them vote when its beneficial to their own political agenda.

In fairness to Standing Rock, the Tribal Council also didn't act upon the petition that had more signatures on it asking to keep their position opposing the nickname.

They also have a representative form of government similar to the United States' constitutional republic (it's not a democracy).

“What happens if a team comes to North Dakota and is blindsided by views of Highway Patrol cars, state highway signs, and other ”hostile and abusive” use of native American imagery, only to realize that the very name of the state they’ve entered is based on the use of another word for “Sioux?”

UND will be accepted into the Big Sky (to the denial of Lakes and other Bison fans like him).

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/a ... id/220955/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Big Sky has been following the North Dakota Legislature. UND President Robert Kelley was in contact with the league office after Dalyrmple’s signature.

UND will join the league without a nickname.

“We are North Dakota,” Faison said. “That’s who we will be.”

Although I don't think that UND will have a problem being accepted into the Big Sky as planned, the article doesn't have a direct quote from anyone (Kelley, Faison, etc) that the Big Sky is saying "You are no longer in danger of losing league membership". This appears to be more of an assumption the way the article reads. So, I'm not sure you can say for sure that we are out of the woods yet.

The words "contact with the league AFTER Dalrmple's signature" is a good sign that we are in or else if there was a problem Kelley would have said something. I am going with 99% we are in.

Even for argument's sake its a 50/50 division on the reservation's over the name.. ( PS NONE OF THEM GIVE A $HIT ABOUT THE NAME), even if its 50/50, you cant arrogantly use the name against the will of 50% that DONT WANT YOU TO. heck 25% that DONT WANT YOU TO.

I work with 2 sioux tribes & 2 chippewa tribes , I havent met 1 that says "hell yea, im a fighting sioux"

ps- to show you how IRRELEVANT UND is, if it wasnt for 1 delusional fan, 1 DARREL THE $7/HOUR MAN, no one on CS or AGS would even mention these racists.
Lakes - If you say you've been involved in activities to try to make life better on reservations, I'll take you for your word. Thank you.

I've always felt that the imagery UND used for their sports teams was done in a more honorable manner than Chief Illiniwek's "dance", Cleveland's Chief Wahoo or those hefty, suburban Washington Redskin fans dressing up in fake headresses. But I'm not Sioux. I'm not Native American. It's not my place to say what people should and shouldn't be offended by. I don't think it's the NCAA's place either unless they are consistent in their approach and either 1.) eliminate all native mascots across the board, 2.) allow all native mascots across the board or 3.) say that it is up to the colleges, tribes and state governments to come to an agreement.

I still think your hatred for UND is over the top. Rivalries are supposed to be fun. Spirited but fun in the end. I'm glad my UND and NDSU fan friends/relatives don't take it to your level when I'm around them. Que sera sera.

That being said...I look forward to UND in the Big Sky Conference next year and I will root for NDSU football in the playoffs but not in basketbal against NAU this weekend.

Speaking of "Sioux;" or at least the sound of the word: Someone ought to sue the NCAA for creating this nonsense. Surely there must be a way to do it.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

It's not my place to say what people should and shouldn't be offended by.
Sure it is. I know you went on to say some other stuff that kind of qualifies your position. But it IS legitimate at some point to just tell people, "Get a life. We don't give a s**** if you're offended or not. It's ridiculous for you to be offended."

This thing of walking on pins and needles worrying about if someone is going to be offended is nonsense. Native Americans, Indians, whatever you want to call them being offended by something like the "Fighting Sioux" nickname is ridiculous. And people ought to be willing to say so. They ought to be willing to say so and they ought to be willing to say that if some are offended they can go whine at the TV screen. But nobody's going to change the way they do things because of their absurd sensitivity.

Especially under circumstances where the majority of the Sioux don't even care.

Depends who you ask? UND-yes, "Sioux" fans-no due to the lawsuit, UND fans-yes 99% sure due to no official quote except President Kelley's statement, NDSU fans-hell no due to no official quote from the NCAA, and the hope UND gets kicked out of the Big Sky. Stay tuned....and go easy on the popcorn we are running out. :D

Changes are coming:

According to WDAZ News on Facebook:
UND President Robert Kelley announced today at his state of the university speech that the school will be using the 'flame' logo until 2015. #sioux #UND Here is a pic of the flame logo.

Image
The logo represents the eternal flame that is on the campus.

Also: http://www.grandforksherald.com/even...cle/id/221627/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The men’s hockey team — the university’s marquee sports attraction — will continue to take the ice wearing the familiar name and logo into February, as replacement jerseys won’t arrive until then.
The hockey team “will continue to wear Fighting Sioux jerseys until February,” he said, but he declined to describe the replacement jerseys in detail.
“They will certainly have ‘North Dakota’ on them,” he said, and the interlocking ND has been on the jerseys for some time.
“We’ll be at the tail end of our season then, and we’ll make the switch when we’ve got the new ones. And we have to have them for NCAA post-season play.”
