You are assuming that the team will remain the same, which of course is not the case. :wall:

I am assuming that the team won't miss Roy Oswalt. He showed me nothing last year, other than the fact that he has back problems. There is no reason to think his back problems will go away as he gets older.

If Halladay, Lee and Hamels aren't enough to get the team into the post season, the teams problems will be more dire than any cure Roy Oswalt can offer.

Let the offseason play out and let's revisit this issue later. It'll be a better debate if we know what the 2012 roster looks like first.

This deal is absolutely ridiculous. You could sign Joe Nathan or Jonathan Broxton to a short term contract for a fraction of the price, and be able to allocate the additional money to shore up the offense/rest of the bullpen.

History shows that closers are rarely consistently excellent over a four year span, in fact there are only two:

Mariano Rivera
Trevor Hoffman

So with that, remember that Papelbon is more likely to be BJ Ryan than he is to be very good over the length of the contract.

That remains to be seen. I think the window for this Phillies teams to win it all is probably 2 more years, maybe 3. If Papelbon is efffective for 2 years it's a good deal, if not then you are right.

Actually, you should include Papelbon in that category if you are only going 4 year spans.

2005 through 2009 he was dominant. 2010 was a bad year. And he got back on track in 2011.

If you look at the stats, Papelbon has been better through his first 7 seasons than Hoffman. Rivera is a freak of nature and can't be compared to.

His seasons were inconsistent though. Saying that you can't compare him to Mariano is exactly why this deal is stupid.

and that's why Rivera is making $15 million per season while Papelbon will be making $12.5 million.

Nobody compares to Mariano, the Phillies still need a closer. If Papelbon pitches to his ability this is a good deal. Way too early to say otherwise.

Papelbon's 2006-09 is comparable to any 4 year stretch by Rivera

Not sure if I should be happy or sad Papel-bum is out of the AL east now....on one hand I dont have to watch his stupid staredown anymore, on the other hand I really enjoyed watching him blow some memorable save opportunities.

They're doing crappy, because they had a moronic GM who completely neglected the farm system and outbid himself for free agents. Sound familiar?

That's a fair point. Paps has been very, very good for most of his career. Rivera, though, never had a season as bad as Pap's 2010. (Not really a knock on Paps, more of a comment about Rivera).

Thats fine, but the comment was no one besides Rivera and Hoffman have been consistent over a 4 year span and the 2006-09 stretch proves that wrong.

Amaro talked at the press conference about where the Phils are at with payroll. Other than filling some bench & bullpen spots it boils down that the Phils have about $20M that they can spend on 2 impact players. Rollins & Cuddyer? I think Cuddyer will happen, I'd say it's 35/65 or 40/60 on bringing J-Roll back.

What this means is teams signing the players wont lose a pick (Though the Phillies still lose their pick for signing Papelbon) Teams that lose the players will still receive compensation picks, havent read if it will be inserted picks in the first round, or multiple sandwich picks.

What is the reasoning for this? Looks to me like the Phillies are getting screwed.

I think its foolish to change the rules mid offseason, in my opinion, new rules regarding compensation should be implemented next season.

The no loss of draft pick rule for the remainder of this offseason only applies to relief pitchers still on the market, SP and position players are still subject to the loss of draft pick rules.

Making the Phillies cough up the draft pick avoids other teams complaining that they would have signed Papelbon if they knew they would not lose a draft pick.
