No Scoreboard for You

Post by 89Hen »

http://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/ ... d/8191735/
The scoreboard for the football field at Aberdeen High School (Md.) is old and in need of repairs. The Hendersons offered to donate $20,000 of the $50,000 needed to fix the dilapidated scoreboard, but they were turned down.

The problem is that the donation reportedly was conditional; the Hendersons wanted their family name on the scoreboard.

The school board rejected the offer citing an advertising policy that prevents naming rights on athletic facilities. Five of the nine voters on Harford County's Board of Education reportedly turned down the proposal.

The Harford County's Board of Education has also rejected a proposal to name a school's field after a former football captain who was killed in action in Iraq, so this proves they're strict about sticking to policy.

"It’s like a slap in the face, honestly," Erin Henderson said. "Here we are thinking we can try to do something big, trying to give back to the community. Trying to do something positive to help out the people who helped us out in different ways when we were growing up and coming up. And we saw this opportunity."
At first I thought, how stupid of the school board, but now I'm thinking shame on these two yahoos. I guess they don't read the bible...
"Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
Matthew 6:1-4

On a more serious note, if I ever hit the lottery big, like a $300M Powerball or something, I would give big to UD if I got certain assurances about what I wanted done with the money. I would not want my name attached to the things done with my money. It seems tacky to me. Just my :twocents: . I think the whole phenomenon has something to do with the short dick mentality of a lot of people who made it big. Jerry Jones comes to mind.

I agree with everything you said 93.

But also...the school district really needs to weigh the money issue. If these two fellows want to donate some cash and all you have to do is put a couple of names on it...why not? They aren't saying lets put up the scoreboard and put a bunch of AD's on it. Just two fucking names. I can see both sides of the fence but the school might want to reconsider.

Good thing Chandler AZ didn't have those rules - the last three high schools built have been named after the families that used to own the land the schools were built on, and donated the land to the school district.

And "gasp" one of them even owns a grocery store chain with the family name on it.

If these jackasses are so eager to get their name out there they should rent a billboard. More people will see it and it will cost less.

I think it was more than that. They wanted to do something nice for the school...but both sides ended up being douches over the deal.

Them for insisting that their names be on the scoreboard, and the school for making a big deal out of it and saying, Thanks but NO Thanks. We cannot bend the rules, even though we really really need a new one.

I can understand the schools position though, the admin doesn't want to sellout. If these guys really wanted to do something nice for the school they would just donate the money instead of attaching strings to it.

I agree...

(playing here)

If you donated money to your local highschool or whatever do you think you should be able to earmark it for this or that? Like saying, this $25,000 is for a new track...if there is some left over we can discuss it?

I just think that giving someone X amount and saying I hope you use it for THIS, not sure how much would actually make it to that, if at all.

I'm okay with that. The school has bills to pay, programs to fund etc. Donors should be allowed to choose which program benefits from their donation.

Donating just to get your name in lights doesn't fit that category in my opinion.

The way to handle this is in a 1-for-1, or 2-for-1, etc. deal. That is, you have a specific drive set up where you will donate X times the amount donated by others in the drive. This would get the school off their asses and out hustling. Don't ever let them sit back and rake it in without any work.

Good point. If you can get me the winning Powerball numbers, I'll be sure to follow your plan. I'll even pledge $1M to ODU.

And there's the issue. What if I want to donate for a new scoreboard and put Domino's Pizza on it because I made my money owning franchises? What if my name was John Kroger and I wanted to put Kroger's on it?

The 93henfan Piss Wall, adjacent to Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium, spitting distance from Acierno Arena at Bob Carpenter Center. Trips off the tongue, don't it?

Agree with 89hen and 93henfan. On the other hand, I don't see the board's other decision in anything like the same light, and I'm more curious about that one. I wouldn't have a problem with my old HS football field being named for a graduate who gave his life in service to country. :twocents:

Carpenter and Raymond were UD institutions. Acierno is some greasy developer that probably built clapboard homes for people buying his crap with derivative-backed loans from 89 or AzG.

As an alumni of Aberdeen High School (MD) where this happened, I can see both sides of the story. Harford County is a very identity conscious area. It thinks it's a high class area where it is really a mixture of older and newer suburbs due to the growth of Metro baltimore and Aberdeen having a military base. It has kind of a weird identity to it.

I think it's the schools choice as to who or what they want to advertise for.

Personally, I don't have a problem with advertising for a grocery store. I would be a little more reluctant to take the money if the intent was to advertise a person. If you take the money, and then the guy molests some kids you are now identified with a child molester. Villanova had this problem with the John DuPont Pavillion after Dupont went nuts and killed someone.

They're wanting to donate 40% of the total cost and they want their name on it? Greedy bastards.

My high school is named after a 101st Airborne Sergeant killed in Nam. Thankfully nothing can be done to change his legacy since he's dead.
