Re: JMU Bids
JMU bids is really low for how much they get. It was surprising to me they only spent that much.I would love to find out how much Lehigh and Towson bid for Towson to get the bid. I though Lehigh would've out bid us and we would be on the road all of the way.

Re: JMU Bids
The more I think about this, the more I think it's less about JMU making a mistake and more about EKU buying a game.
Look at the guidelines in the handbook
If the game was at JMU, the NCAA stands to get the 47k guarantee PLUS 75% of any remaining profits. The committee isn't stupid, they know the attendance JMU gets.
It's very possible that EKU submitted a guarantee that even surpasses what JMU would bring in.
These things aren't usually opened up for public consumption, but I would wonder how many times ASU, UD, Montana actually submitted a higher bid for their games...or was it awarded irrespective of bids, because the NCAA knows they are cash cows. It could be that they've never faced a team with such an agressive bid that even trumps potential gate receipts of a 20,000+ stadium.
Look at the guidelines in the handbook
No where does it say the bid winner gets the game, it's not that cut and dry. If not for the submitted guarantees (bids), JMU would obviously make more money for the NCAA.When determining host institutions for playoff games when both teams are unseeded,
criteria shall apply as follows: (1) quality of facility, (2) revenue potential plus
estimated net receipts, (3) attendance history and potential, (4) team’s performance
(e.g., conference place finish, head-to-head results and number of Division I
opponents), and (5) student-athlete well-being (e.g., travel, missed class time).

Last year NDSU bid $100k for our first round game.Dukie95 wrote: These things aren't usually opened up for public consumption, but I would wonder how many times ASU, UD, Montana actually submitted a higher bid for their games...or was it awarded irrespective of bids, because the NCAA knows they are cash cows. Basically, I wonder if EKU's guarantee bid was higher than JMU's "revenue potential plus estimated net receipts".
If so, that's one huge bid!

Re: JMU Bids
Really? Because most rumors I have heard from a number of schools from 2005 to 2009, a large number of bids for the opening round were 55k-65k. I believed that those numbers were still considered a competitive bid.FargoBison wrote:Last year NDSU bid $100k for our first round game.Dukie95 wrote: These things aren't usually opened up for public consumption, but I would wonder how many times ASU, UD, Montana actually submitted a higher bid for their games...or was it awarded irrespective of bids, because the NCAA knows they are cash cows. A source of ours that talked with YSU AD Ron Strollo said it was going to be JMU at YSU in round 1 had YSU not f-ed up...

Yeah, our AD said that is what he bid. We made $30-40k after the NCAA took their cut from the gate(I think attendance for the game was between 12-13k).urmite wrote:Really? Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of bids released from other schools for each round?

Re: JMU Bids
You have to wonder if EKU essentially bought their way into the playoffs. Perhaps the committee looked at the 7-4's (sans Delaware) and decided to take the team with the highest bid.
Delaware was left out due to only having 6 DI wins.

Bids aren't supposed to be opened until after matchups are set.BearIt wrote:You have to wonder if EKU essentially bought their way into the playoffs. Perhaps the committee looked at the 7-4's (sans Delaware) and decided to take the team with the highest bid.

They don't open bids until AFTER the field is selected

Re: JMU Bids
Text of part of my e-mail to the JMU AD:
".....Imagine if you had submitted a significantly higher bid than the $46,768 that was publically reported by Mike Barber and JMU was awarded a home game. Even if JMU ended up losing 10, 20, 30, or 40 thousand dollars, the intangible benefits of having a home playoff game would outweigh that rather small sum in the grand scheme of things.
-The opportunity to host a home game on National Television would have been a wonderful opportunity to show off what is the crown jewel of FCS stadiums, along with JMU’s beautiful campus (I realize when the bids were submitted several weeks ago you had no way of knowing JMU would be in the field with a 1st round nationally game, but you had to know there was a decent chance of that).
-It would have been an economic benefit to the Harrisonburg area in terms of hotel rooms booked, restaurants, bars, and other area businesses visited by thousands of out of town fans.
-It would have given those loyal home fans a chance to cheer on the Dukes in a 6th home game, making up for having only five during the regular season.
-It wouldn’t have left a sour taste in the mouths of many of us loyal JMU supporters that will linger for quite some time.
-It would have been much better for ALL of FCS football to have this game played at the newly renovated BFS, the Crown Jewel of FCS stadiums, which I think would have been 2/3-3/4 full, as opposed to the relic of a stadium that EKU has that is likely to be ¼-1/3 full on Saturday. Having this game nationally televised at EKU will just do more to perpetuate the notion that FCS is “small time football.”
-MOST IMPORTANTLY, it would have given the Dukes a better chance at upsetting North Dakota State on the road. Having to play a 3rd straight road game against a very good team that has a bye week just makes things more difficult for the Dukes......"

Re: JMU Bids
I would not at all be surprised to find out that EKU bid in the $200,000 range.
Even if with a 60k guarantee from EKU, the NCAA would be better off with gate receipts from JMU.

Is this very close to the JMU bid? Projecting 48% and 58% of an avg crowd?

Re: JMU Bids
Eh, how much did they lose really? $15 per ticket even with that paltry attendance (announced at 2388) would give them about $36k. Then you add in that the OVC helped boost their bid, so that's money the OVC lost, not EKU. $63k is really a pretty modest bid - not crazy at all. When it comes down to it, JMU just low-balled the bid.CAA Flagship wrote:So they lost the game and a boat load of money.UNHWildCats wrote:Responding to a open records request, Eastern Kentucky has announced their first round bid was $63,318.75.

Re: JMU Bids
Factor in the cost of gameday operations and possibly a subsidy for student tickets, I guessing somebody lost at least 40K. I'm thinking that is a boat load for EKU/OVC.GannonFan wrote:Eh, how much did they lose really? $15 per ticket even with that paltry attendance (announced at 2388) would give them about $36k.
