Georgia wins SEC east

Post by youngterrier »

Take that JSO. Boise looks pretty decent now. I know there was a thread on here a few months ago about them not having a win in the SEC (after one game?!) and now they finish 7-1 in the SEC, winning 9 straight. Mark Richt has saved his job, especially if he wins next week against the ramblin wreck of Georgia Tech. They could very well lose to LSU and probably will, but their defense plays pretty good and should keep them in it.

Had Boise not stubbed their toes against TCU, I think that UGA in the SEC Championship Game would have made them serious condenders for the B(C)$ Championship Game. I still think this gets them into one of the lower-tier B(C)$ games, though.

Something is going to have to give, though. Barring a loss to UGA, LSU is in the Title Game. I think 'Bama's on the outside looking in (assuming Oregon doesn't lose). That makes for a big decision for the B(C)$ bowls. According to the rules, conferences can only place TWO in those games. Does that second slot go to a school that didn't even win its division within the conference? That's going to be tough to swallow for UGA fans, particularly if they lose to LSU close.

Yes, because of a scheduling fluke in which they managed to avoid playing any of the top 3 teams in the SEC West (who, incidentally, are the top 3 teams in the country), Georgia managed to win the SEC East. Enjoy getting blown out by LSU in Atlanta.

I actually think LSU is the best matchup for Georgia out of the three top SEC west teams. But, at the same time, I do think it's a bit much to act like Georgia is all that at this point. Unless Alabama loses to Auburn, which is very unlikely, by the time next week is over Georgia will not have beaten a single team in any top 25. Frankly I don't understand why Auburn is in the top 25 right now as they were lucky to beat Utah State.

At the beginning of the season I thougth Georgia would finish third in the SEC East behind South Carolina and Florida. It turned out Florida sucked. Plus Florida had to play both LSU and Alabama. Another thing that happened is that Vanderbilt snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Georgia. Yet another thing that happened is South Carolina kicked its starting quarterback off the team and lost its all world running back to inury.

Georgia has not been impressive at all. It's been a combination of not playing any of the three big guys from the SEC west as both Florida and South Carolina had to and the SEC East being really down.

So, what you're saying, JSO, is that Newton:Auburn::Manning:Indianapolis. Is that right?

Im calling it now. Georgia will win the SEC championship over LSU and LSU/Bama will play for the National championship. And another silver bullet will be fired at the BCS.

How does LSU get into the title game if they lose the SEC Championship Game? It would seem to me that someone else would get that spot. Probably Oregon.

Oregon with two losses will not over take LSU with one. Especially since LSU beat them earlier this season.

Oklahoma State maybe, but I think LSU stays ahead of Bama. So even with a loss in the SEC championship game I think LSU still gets into the BCS title game. (Assuming that LSU is undefeated going into the SEC championship game).

:+1:

Yeah, Oregon is out of the discussion.

Lots of people down here think Alabama has a much easier path to the title game than LSU, as LSU has to play an "extra game" versus a ranked team, while Bama gets a week off.

First, LSU has to win this weekend against the #3 team in the nation. If they win, they will have beaten #3 Oregon, #25 Miss St, #16 West Virginia, #17 Florida, #20 Auburn, #2 Alabama and #3 Arkansas. That would be 7 out of 12 victories against ranked opponents, 8 out of 13 if they go on to beat Georgia. If you go by strength of schedule for the 1 loss teams (if you include LSU losing the SEC championship):

1. LSU - will have played 8 ranked opponents
2. Alabama/Arkansas - will have played 5 ranked opponents
3. OSU/Stanford - will have played 4 ranked opponents
4. Virginia Tech - will have played 2 ranked opponents

Boise, Houston, VT and Stanford should be left off IMO for their cupcake schedules when compared to OSU, Bama, Arkansas and LSU.... and that loss to Iowa St even makes OSU questionable. So say at the end of the season #1, 2 and 3 are still LSU, Bama and Arkansas... you put two SEC teams in the title game, right? Which one of those teams throws a hissy fit for getting snubbed? Does the BCS finally implode?

Remember y'all, Georgia has had only one really impressive performance this year. I guess. That was the big win over Auburn. They struggled to get by Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Kentucky. They're not that good. At least it doesn't look like it at this point.

well, we're heading to an all-SEC national championship game so that speaks to "the greatness of the SEC". Who was the last team not from the SEC to win the national championship? Maybe its just my biased opinion but I honestly can't remember....Southern Cal? Texas?

I know what you're gonna say and thats LSU needs to play Georgia in the SECCG but honestly I don't think the Bulldogs stand a chance. And I don't think Auburn stands a chance against 'Bama tomorrow.

I think it's safe to say that LSU is a lot better than Georgia and Alabama is a lot better than Auburn but nothing can be taken for granted in college football. Oklahoma State's a lot better than Iowa State and Oklahoma's a lot better than Texas Tech. USC once had a great team loaded with NFL players that lost to a 40 point underdog (Stanford).

As good as LSU looked yesterday I still think that from Georgia's standpoint the tigers are the best matchup for them out of the three top SEC west teams.

To answer your question, yes, the last time someone other than an SEC team won the BCS championship was the 2005/s006 season when Texas beat USC in that great game. Since then it's been Florida over Ohio State, LSU over Ohio State, Florida over Oklahoma, Alabama over Texas, and Auburn over Oregon. When it comes to FBS football I'm a SEC fan but even I am getting tired of this. No so much that the SEC has won five in a row and will be guaranteed six unless Alabama loses today but because I know it'd be different if there were a playoff like in FCS. Whatever the scenario would be it's very unlikely that we'd have the same set of "national champions."

I think Texas would've beaten Alabama in the 2009/2010 BCS title game if Cold McCoy hadn't gone down. Also Oregon had a real shot to beat Auburn last year. But c'est la vie.

I don't want an Alabama/LSU rematch for the national title either. But I must admit that a big part of that is that LSU is my favorite FBS team and I DON'T want them to have to play Alabama again. They were lucky to win the first time and I don't like seeing them have to tempt fate again.

No, that's one of their two quality games. If you go by the "average" of ratings at http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Boise State played two teams rated in the 15 to 20 range right now and went 1-1 against them.

Boise State has beaten some good but not great big name teams under circumstances where they've usually had either all off season or a month or so prior to a bowl to focus and prepare for that one opponent in a game that meant the world to them. That's not the same as playing against BCS league level talent week in and week out over most of the season. That's always been the thing. It's why I don't think they should ever have been in any BCS championship game conversation.

There's a limit to what they can do in terms of schedule strength but at the very least they ought to try to schedule at least decent BCS league programs for all of their non conference games and they should be willing to go on the road to do it. This stuff about people not wanting to play them is nonsense. They could find BCS league teams to play them if they'd give up on the idea of return home games. And in their position they should be wililng to do that.

Georgia had an entire off season to prepare for Boise, and still lost.

Last year Virginia Tech and an entire off season to prepare for Boise, and still lost.

I agree that Boise doesn't play a meat grinder schedule like the SEC teams do, but in the last two years, when Boise has beaten quality teams, essentially on the road, the other team had as much time to prepare as Boise did. Boise did not win "trap" games against those teams.

Also, just because Boise doesn't play an SEC schedule doesn't mean that they couldn't. If Boise were in the SEC they might still be 10-1 and alive in the BCS championship game discussion.

I also disagree regarding home and home. If teams don't want to go to Boise, they shouldn't complain about Boise's strength of schedule. If you're afraid to schedule a tough road game you shouldn't question anyone elses schedule.

All college football ratings should be taken with a grain of salt. Teams don't play enough games to get an accurate rating, the sample size is too small.

And, even if they played enough games to get an accurate rating, ratings don't take match ups and playing styles into account. Ratings also can't reflect the emotional ups and downs of an entire season either.

Basing an argument on ratings is weak.

Same here. What would be the odds that should Georgia lose the SECCG to LSU that South Carolina will go to a "higher tier" bowl game than the Dawgs?
