Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
Well, I know they've had a tough time. But that was a gritty effort by Eastern Kentucky today. They had a real shot to beat a CAA team. That trick play they called near the end was there. They just didn't quite hit it.

Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
You can call it a tough fought game but at the end of the day they blew a 10 point lead at home vs the 5th place team from the CAA. Good effort by JMU on the comeback. I wonder if EKU doesn't call that timeout if JMU would have went for it rather than punting like they planned on doing? Nice kick by the kicker as well...clutch
And their champion got pounded at home. Can we just give that conference one playoff spot from now on?

Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
How about some kind of steel cage/Caribbean strap/casket match every year where a 2nd place MEAC and a 2nd place OVC team play, and the winner will get an at large birth....still let them keep their automatic births, but just completely remove the possibility that both conferences could ever get 2 births? The loser has to shut down their team for a year and act as event security at the FCS championship game.UD1Hens wrote:

Why are we even considering them for an auto? Every year they just **** it down their leg. Are we at 0-21 now? Trapped will have to correct me if I'm wrong but....C'MON MAN!!
I'm kidding, they deserve an auto (barely) but if we are ever considering 2nd OVC team in the future they'd better have 1-2 losses MINIMUM until that conference proves it can play with the big boys (although kinda ironic that the 2nd considered OVC team was the one that looked like it wanted to play today...)

Well, I'm not going to throw stones because giving the OVC a second bid can't be THAT much worse at this point than seeding a Southland team #1.panther-state wrote:Why are we even considering them for an auto? Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
The differences are remarkable. In a one game bowl format, the 'have-nots' seem to be able to beat the haves at the FBS level. Conversely, in a multi-game format at the FCS level, the unacceptably bad record of the 'have-nots' from the OVC and the MEAC speaks for itself.DSUrocks07 wrote:BCS BCS BCS BCS BCS
But you do have a point DSU. Since you're a proponent of the BCS, I suggest some type of bowl game format between the MEAC and OVC with a plus one. Championship could be called the Dog Food Bowl, be sponsored by ALPO, and appropriately be played in Kentucky where deceased race horses serve as the primary ingredient in ALPO products.

Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
Agree 100%. No way a 7-4 OVC team deserves an at large. Until the OVC autobid rep starts to win games in the playoffs no way an OVC team with 3 losses should get an at large.panther-state wrote:Why are we even considering them for an auto? DSU, I said right above that I would keep the automatic berths. That clarified, it's obvious that the playoff format doesn't seem to be working for the OVC or the MeAC, so the Dog Food Bowl could be a fun postseason option for leagues having difficulty being relevant in the FCS playoffs. If the DFB is unacceptable, I think the casket match could be worthy of some consideration and would be mutually beneficial for everyone in preventing future confusion about how bad both leagues are, and what would be a maximum acceptable number of teams allowed to participate from the OVC and MeAC memberships.DSUrocks07 wrote:How long until you guys start calling for the NEC to lose its playoff bid?State Line Liquors wrote:

Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
I don't think a conference's automatic bid ought to be taken away from playoff performance. I realize nobody's really saying that but, In fact, I think they ought to establish criteria for what it takes to be a FCS league then any league that meets those criteria should get an automatic bid.
I think it's important for FCS to have the MEAC in and I wish the SWAC and Ivy were in.
It really is too bad that Eastern Kentucky didn't win yesterday. Yes, JMU was clearly the better team but I found myself pulling for the Colonels as they were scratching and fighting and putting themselves in position to have a chance to win. Then they call their big trick play at the right time in the right situation and it's there big time. But they just didn't hit it. Really too bad.

Personally, I think every conference should have an autobid to the playoff, excluding independents. But I guess the SWAC and IVY abstain.

Re: Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
We already have the Heritage Bowl redux on deck with the SWAC. So the OVC is gonna need a replacement for us in the DFB...maybe a third place MVFC or a sixth place CAA or a Big Sky not named Montana.State Line Liquors wrote:DSU, I said right above that I would keep the automatic berths. Time is fast approaching when all incoming 18 YO freshmen in the OVC will have been born after the last playoff victory. Make it happen - don't ever f--- with a losin streak.

Absolutely amazing that a conference with an 0-18 record could even get two teams INTO the playoffs.Trapped in CA wrote:0-20 since 97panther-state wrote:Why are we even considering them for an auto? Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
There were 3-4 more deserving teams than EKU. Illinois State, Bethune-Cookman, Delaware...or even going to a 6-win team with a much better track record/resume like EWU, PSU or (God forbid) Liberty.Grizalltheway wrote:Especially considering the Big Sky only got two, as well. At least the big sky teams have a semi-legit argument that there are only so many teams to play out west. The OVC has no such fig leaf to hide behind. I can't remember that last time we (UNI) played any OVC team.

Re: Ohio Valley Conference football
The only rationale for the existence of the OVC is to make the MVFC look good at playoff time. After all if the OVC did not exist the selections committee would have to send some weak Patriot League team to Iowa or Illinois and watch what happens.
The OVC is the official beeeeyotch of the MVFC.
