Valentine will be in Boston only until Farrells contract with Toronto expires after the 2013 season. The reason this took so long is because Boston has been trying to get a deal with Toronto to let Farrell go.
I dont particularly like the Valentine hire and a lot of fans are pointing to his unimpressive MLB managing career before... but as someone in the media pointed out tonite on twitter... Francona hadn't won anything before coming to Boston either.

Joe Maddon would be a great fit in Boston, imagine what he could do with all of that talent. However, sources say he is at home in Tampa. Could you imagine living there year around?
The Cubs are going to be scary now that they have a competent gm at the reigns.

The Sox are looking at Valentine as a guy who can re-establish discipline in the clubhouse, which he will do.
He's also a very smart baseball man (although he was frequently criticized for too much outside-the-box thinking while managing the Mets).
He also talks too much and will be a gift to the unruly Boston media and their penchant for not merely reporting controversy, but creating it, often to the detriment of the Sox. (At least that's my perception of what the Boston sports media do).
Key question: will his mouth overshadow his ability to motivate and instill discipline? My guess is that he will be a successful short-term catalyst to get the Sox to play up to their talent level before he self-immolates with comments that will irk Sox management sometime in the next two seasons.

Joe Maddon would be a great fit for anybody...I'm saying if the Yanks at some point fire Girardi which sooner or later will happen they should offer a nice contract to Maddon to come to New York.jwmann2 wrote:Joe Maddon would be a great fit in Boston, imagine what he could do with all of that talent. When Francona was let go Valentine was the 1st guy I thought of - surprised it took them this long to come back to him.
Was surprised to hear the negative reactions this morning on the hire.

Yeah the two favorites as soon as Francona was let go were Bobby V. and Joe Torre....bluehenbillk wrote:When Francona was let go Valentine was the 1st guy I thought of - surprised it took them this long to come back to him.

the new draft rules and international free agent rules will hamper Epsteins style though.jwmann2 wrote:Joe Maddon would be a great fit in Boston, imagine what he could do with all of that talent. However, sources say he is at home in Tampa. Could you imagine living there year around?

Hold for one or two years, while discipline is restored, then sell.
